AutoCAD Civil 3D :: How To Share Data With Subconsultants
Apr 9, 2013
On large projects comprised of numerous plans, profiles, alignments, surfaces, etc..... what is the best way to share all of this data as one complete package to others?
Won't all the data shortcuts and xref's be disconnected and require a fair amount of work for the end user to recreate?
I have a master shape file that contains parcel ID, owner, tax info., etc. I have another file ( access 2003 -open to better file format suggestions-) which contains parcel ID and a "yes" or " no" entry for whether or not the parcel needs a new water meter. All I want to do is add the water meter information into the other shape file. This would create one shape file with one table with all the information that I need.
Ultimately I will use the information to do a map query and find out spatially where i need new water meters.
Right now i have the master shape file connected though the “Connect to Data” feature. I also have the new data added to the drawing though the Data sources------>attach under the “Map Explorer” Task pane. I attached access file (ver. 2003 .mdb) which has two columns “Parcel ID” and “Meter”.
I right click on the shape file under the display manager and select”Create a Join;” however my water meter table is not listed as an option. Will this not work?
Plan B - I tried to Create and connect to the access file as an ODBC connection. Followed this guy’s directions to a T [URL]. But when i populate my table under the fdo connection the column headings exist ( “parcel ID” and “Meter”) but the actual data is missing. Am I missing something important?
Note: I am running c3d 2012 on a Win 7 64 Bit machine. I also removed office 32 bit apps and installed 64 bit apps to see if that would solve the problem. No go.
I am a technology consultant with a client using Civil 3D 2012.
They moved from 2008 to 2012, and we've noticed something a bit odd: browsing network shares from within Autocad's file explorer is significantly slower than doing the same in Windows Explorer. By "slower", I mean going from directory to directory shows noticeable lag before the directory contents are displayed, whereas in Windows Explorer there isn't any. They don't recall having this issue with 2008.
All workstations are Windows 7, and the "server" where the shares live is running XP Pro (very small firm with 2-3 people hitting the "server" at any given time - 3 is rare). I've updated Civil 3d with the latest service pack (2) as of this writing hoping it might resolve the issue, but it doesn't seem to.
say you make some parcels in your project with custom data fields like: id_no, permit_no, acres_served etc. you attach an agency provided shape file via an fdo connection that has many fields of information like above.
when you right click on your parcel and do parcel properties you get a tab that lets you input the custom parcel data.
lets say you print an fdo map label showing, say, the id_no, provided in the shape file. Then in your custom parcel properties for id_no you type that in.
is there a way to make an expression to put in the other custom parcel properties that will read, say, the permit_no(id_no) from the fdo like and put that information in the custom parcel property field?
I'm having problems getting super elevation data to transfer to different drawings by means of an alignment data shortcut. I know alignments hold the super elevation data so I've gone into my alignments data shortcut, input my super elevation data, saved and closed. Now when I open my finished grade drawing, reference in my alignment and profiles, then create a corridor from that information, my super elevation didn't transfer with the reference.
I pulled cross sections and it appears is has no clue there is any super elevation data. Also, I tried bringing it directly into the drawing I'm doing my corridors in and it erred saying I must be in the parent alignment drawing. Data shortcuts are pretty much useless to me if super elevation data doesn't transfer.

i have created a data band in profile view that should show a created profiles elevation, but some of the the data fields are missing irregulary. Also in the data band that shoud show the diferenece betven the tow profiles - EG and the new profile the data is missing. The EG profiles data and the surface are ok all is shown.
I've just installed Civil3D, 64-bit on windows 7(running on bootcamp) and am trying to insert a georeferenced raster image but have encountered some issues.
1. "Home tab>>Data panel>>>insert An Image" - The data panel is missing and it's also not found in "customize palettes"
2. Trying the data connect route does not work either: Display manager>>>Data>>>Connect To Data - There is no 'Data' option and I cannot connect to Data.
I've been given GIS data from a county and trying to design a water line using it. I have the .shp files for all the structures, roads, addresses, parcels, etc. bu the utilties are in a .mdb file. How do I use the .mdb to show the line work for the existing water line.
I do a lot of hydraulic modeling and create river bed surface datafrom surveyed points. I need to be able to transfer the surface data from Civil3D to GIS effectively. The issue is that GIS does not maintain the fidelity of my surface based on the breaklines I've drawn. It triangulates based on vertices and often triangulates through the feature lines. In LDD, I was able to do address this by adding vertices to my 3D polylines in a batch-type function. That is, I could select all of my 3D polylines and add vertices to them at the same time. In Civil3D, I have to add vertices to each feature line individually.
Any way to add vertices to feature lines, or to a surface, in a more efficient manner that maintains fidelity of surface data in the transfer from Civil3D to GIS?
I'm working in C3D 2009 and I have received some GIS data files that I would like to import. I don't work with GIS files in my daily work so I am not familiar with them. Although I have an idea of what kind of information can be stored in the GIS files. I've managed to get the data into my drawing using mapimport, but how do I know that I have successfully inserted all of the information that was sent to me?
I was given shx, shp, dbf, idx, prj, sbn, sbx, and xml files. All I have in my drawing are polylines that have a little bit of extra information when the properties box is displayed. It just seems like a lot of files to be sent to only receive a polyline. Although all of the files except the shp files have only 1kb file sizes, and the shp file is 400 kb. So perhaps I was just sent extra files?
I am learning to use surfaces in drawing, My main aim is for volumisation tasks. I had been following a tutorial that relied on creting surfaces. i.e
1) from the home tab> Surfaces> Create Surface
2)Add data. From Modify Tab>Surface> Add Data> Point Files.
This worked for me to start with but after changing some settings (looking to display a missing toolbar, I clicked or unticked one or two boxes, Not sure where, I know silly!). The only options I have in the drop down from "add data" are: Boundaries and DEM files. All other options in the list are not clickable.
What setting I need to change or perhaps restore all settings to default. Any comments on volumisation (spoil heps, Data is x,y,Z from survey equipment.
I have a large model containing 40km of pipeline. The pipe network and alignment were then brought into separate drawing via data shortcuts where the sheet layouts and long sections were generated.
The pipeline is now under construction and we need to compile the as-built drawings as the pipeline is constructed. I want to make a copy of the model containing the pipe network and alignment, then update that to reflect the as-built information.
I also want to copy the drawings (containing the layouts and long sections), but these would still reference the model used to generate the construction drawings.
Is it possible to redirect these data shortcuts?
(Using Civil3D 2011) - we could upgrade to 2012 if required. ________________________________________________________________ Dell T3500, Win7 Pro 64-bit, Xeon W3520 @2.67GHz, 6GB RAM, Quadro FX580 Inventor Professional 2011 64-bit Civil 3D 2011 64-bit
Trying to connect to raster data through FDO Provider , 3D Map for Geospatial, raster formats are Drg, MrSid, Tiff and ECW, all formats load up but do not display, using Autocad Civil 3D 2008.
I was given a C3D file with a road alignment including sections. But the all the road data is a block. Is there a way to retrieve all the data in order for me to do some quanities for my estimates on material volumes. When I go to the prospector tab, there are no points, surfaces, or alignments listed.
I see you can import junctions from GIS shapefiles, but can you import inlets? I have hundreds of inlets (mostly grate inlets) and I need to import the inlet type and inlet opening dimensions. I have a shap file with the inlet data, but I'm unable to import it into SSA with all the information I need.
I know you can import shapefiles as junctions and convert them to inlets, but then you would have to manually input the dimensions of the inlet. Is it possible for SSA to automate this processs?
I have created a data shortcut to a surface using Civil3D 2011. When I create a reference to it in another drawing, it shows up in the Prospector but nothing shows up on the screen. I have played with the surface style and made sure all the layers were on and tried closing and reopening the drawing.
I have also tried to reference it into a brand new blank drawing and I even tried to reference a surface in a different file that I have referenced several times before (in 2010). Every time I get the same results. It seems like the surface is there, but I just can't see it.
I am having problem importing data from two different source. The first one is hypso data and is supposed to be in lat / long from the CSRS. When I import the shape file in C3D using these specification, the white arrow appears in the center of the drawing, and everything seems fine.
Now then, I have those data point from land survey with a GPS I wish to had to my surface. When I import my text file ( which is in P - X - Y - Z format ), the point appears way offside of the hypso drawing.
So I was wondering, how can I know the system in which those point were recorded. Once I know this, how can I specify to C3D that the hypso is in a certain system, and the GPS point in another one, so that they will come together ?
I have two sheet files (files which reference other drawings/data and contain multiple layouts) which do not plot correctly in a batch. Upon opening the files all profile surfaces (existing and proposed) do not display. I run SYNCHRONIZEREFERENCES to make the profiles show up. I would love a solution to that, but that's a different topic. So now the profiles show up, in all tabs and even in a plot preview. However if I try to run the Publish command and print all tabs to either .pdf, .dwf, or the plotter the profiles do not show up. I must go to each and every tab and plot the sheets individually.
I had a few problems moving a project from 2012 to 2014. After a couple of tries I got everything set except the main alignment. When I originally used the Data Shortcut Editor to change the path of the shortcuts. I noticed that most of the paths were mostly UNC paths. So I replaced them with the current UNC path.
Now when trying to fix the one shortcut I've noticed that there is now a duplicate of the UNC path shortcut and one using the pathed network drive. So there is now a total of 3 references for each shortcut. I don't know yet if this is part of the problem but it doesn't look like it's a good thing.
My first inclination would be to delete all but the newest XML file for each reference.
I want to be able to repath a data shortcut I have on my drawing to a file thats on my C: drive, how do I do this? Its just for this one drawing I want to do it with, so the Data Shortcuts Editor is no good to me.
Does the source file size impact the functionality of a surface data reference?
Case 1 I have a source dwg that has a single surface, Surface A, in it and is an overall small file size. Case 2 I have a source dwg that has Surface A as well as another 10 surface and the file size is HUGE.
When I data reference out Surface A from Case 1 versus Case 2 does the new drawing look back at the entire drawing or just the surface data to make sure the surface is up-to-date when syncing?
Not sure what has happens but the dtat shortcuts for the surfaces in this jb now appear twice in the list of data shortcuts the look at the same file ,etc how can I remove these double ups. I tried the Data reference editor there is no delete button. Can I manually edit the xml file?
I have a problem with different coordinate systems. I have a drawing in old Finnish coordinate system (KKJ, kaista 4) and I have a point file, which is made in ETRS-GK29 coordinate system. When I try to transfer the points to the drawing, the points will land way off from the drawing or I get this error message "Coordinate transformation from ETRF89.FinlandGK-29 to FINL-KKJ4 failed for point located at {29511662.554000,6948599.365000}. This usually indicates the point falls outside the boundaries of the destination coordinate system". I have checked and the point {29511662.554000,6948599.365000} should be over the drawing.
I cant get this one. I have created an alignment in a drawing and created a shortcut. When I data shortcut that alignment into drawing "A", its all good. Alignment starts at station 10+00. When I do the same data shortcut into drawing "B" the alignment is starting at station 0+83.33. Why?
