AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Overlay And Widening Assembly
Aug 12, 2013
I am overlaying and widening an existing road, however the assembly is not behaving as I would like it too. Here is the cross section below, the widening, overlay and day lighting portions appear correct, how the Datum surface is off.
DATUM SURFACE - The datum surface is not following the existing ground in between the two road widening pavement portions. You can see the datum surface as a red line connecting the two paved widening below the existing crown of the road. I would expect the datum surface to follow bottom links of the overlay as well up through the crown, but this is not the case.
EARTHWORKS CUT/FILL SURFACE - The earthworks surface shows that the area between the existing crown and the unexpected datum link is being calculated cut/fill (cut presumably) which it shouldn't be.
ASSEMBLY BEING USED: Perhaps I am misusing the subassemblies, or link codes need to be modified.

I'm looking to make an assembly to follow the crown of the existing roadway which is to be milled and overlayed. In addition to being milled and overlayed there will be a curb bumpout which will be full depth pavement. The roadway does not hold a constant crown at 2%, it varies which is why I would like it to mimic the existing roadway cross slope. What would be the best way to go about making an assembly to model this. I have attached an image so that you may get an idea of the situation. I have a curb gutter line which I would like the assembly to target in both width and elevation. The single slanted hatch is mill and overlay and the double slanted hatch is full depth pavement (widening).

I am having a problem with an overlay and widening C3D 2012 project. The sub assembly I have chosen is processing with the corridor datum surface cutting into the existing road surface, as would happen with a “milling” section (which I don’t want), I need it to overlay onto the existing surface only, with a nominal minimum thickness of 4” . I think this sub assembly is drawing the datum surface from the datum point of the widening on one side to the datum point of the widening on the other side, not sampling the "bottom" of the overlay surface.
See attached screen shot. Also attached are screen shots for some of the sub assembly and corridor parameters for my current settings. I am using the “overlaywidenmatchslope1” and “basicsideslopecutditch” subassemblies.
I have tried changing the sample point offsets and the insert point offsets without fixing this problem. I have not added any additional alignments for saw-cutting yet as I am trying to keep it simple until I get the assembly to process correctly with a fixed width.
I looked at trying the “overlaywidenmatchslope2” subassembly, but it is for non-crowned roads and would not work for this project. Are some of my parameters wrong? Is there another subassembly that I should be using?

I am building an assembly for a shoulder widening. the sholder is 5' paved plus 5' stabalized tying to existing grade at a 4:1 slope. The two shoulder sections are showing up in the cross section but the tie-down is not. I have checked the target and it is set properly to the existing ground.
See below.

I need to create an assembly where the median width varies , I already created the alignment, profile, corridor, section with the design level. Also I have created the assembly with fix width. Now in the middle of my road the median is getting bigger ,Its possible to link the median with a polyline or another alignment were it change the width ?

I have created a widening then created an 11-foot offset from the widening for some reason I cannot create a 22-foot offset or an d11-foot from the first offset. I can go as high as 22.5 but no more. There are no curves in the alignment only linear tapers. why I cant get to 22-feet?

I've used the OverlayWidenMatchSlope1 subassembly to widen a new travel lane using the existing carriageway crossfall then I try to create another lane using the same assemble following the same slope but the insert point always starts on the existing ground rather the new levels from the first new widening lane.

Having issue with the intersection tool for a road widening with turn lane with new roadway intersection. Not repaving entire existing roadway, sawcutting 2' into lane then paving new turn lane. Do most people use intersection tool for road widening, or is it strictly used for new roadways.

I'm working on a windfarm access road (5m wide with widening at bends to 8m) and I need to identify the areas of widening.
I've got the centreline alignment and created the 2.5m offsets to each side. I have also created widening on the insides of the bends using the widening tools and used a linear taper at entry and exit. I now need to hatch up the portions where the road has been widened to demonstrate compliance with the specification and the only easy way I can see is to export to autocad and use the hatch tools (not tried to hatch between alignments).
Whilst this works it isn't dynamic so if the alignment is adjusted the widening alignments are also moved but the hatching remains.

there has used a non-AASHTO curve widening formula to calculate automatic curve widening for an alignment? I'm trying to use our Agency curve widening formula which is a function of curve radius and central angle.
I'm not sure if it is even possible to use the central angle of the curve for calculating widening, or how one would go about using a non-AASHTO CW formula.
Attached is the curve widening formula that needs to be used. L will be a constant here.

Althout I have created the widening on my aliment and used a designer critery on my corridor, I can't achieve that the corridor use the widenig on the curves.
I need that the corridor generate the widening on the curves, I can't stake the corridor without widening.

I thought I created a rail sub assembly.
So I created the rail sub assembly everything looks great in sub assembly composer.
Start a new dwg data reference in the rail alignment, Note the rail alignment type is set to rail.
Create an assembly and under the Construction tab for the assembly the Assembly Type is set to Railway. Attach my custom sub assembly to this assembly.
Created a corridor and I get this error: Something wrong with current subassembly: Operation is not valid due to the current state of the object.
So I delete my sub assembly attach the Civil 3D Rail Single sub assembly. Re run corridor and everything works fine.
So I promote the alignment change type to centerline. Delete the Rail Single sub assembly put my rail sub assembly back. Rerun the corridor and everything works.
So then I undo everything up to the point of promoting the alignment.
Opened the base file changed the alignment type to centerline.
When I tried to synchronize the references I ended up a broken reference with the following error. Invalid reference. Synchronization failed
Not good we already have plan sheets cut.
where in sub assembly composer were do I define the sub assembly to be for Rail?

I have a finished corridor, but now I need to add marked points to label a few key grade breaks in my cross sections. When I attempt to add the marked points on some of my sub-assemblies it gives me the error that the sub-assembly is not part of the assembly. I can right click the sub-assemly and choose "Add to Assembly" but when I rebuild the corridor it strips all the sub-assembly data from my assembly and leaves me with essentially a null assembly for the range.

Would be interested in a strategy for a varying depth overlay, i.e. where the overlay assembly follows a centerline design profile rather than a pavement depth up from existing grade. Then the trick would be for the software to calculate the asphalt volume between the new top surface and the existing roadway surface.

I am trying to overlay a large area,I have a design profile grade that I must use. I need the new edge of the overlay pavement to be 2" above the existing as long as the pavement cross slope is between 1% to 1.5% . If the slope goes above or below the min or max I need it to take the min or max. If I use the overlaymillandlevel2 I am unable to get it to use the overlay thickness since i am using a profile.

I'm very new to Civil 3D.I've been given original topography in a .dwg file and a .csv file of the same topography after some dirt work.My problem is when I import the .csv file the points don't overlay the original topography.
What I have done is added the .csv points to the original topography .dwg with the "Points From File" option.

There are been a few posts about transitions this week, so here is a simple little sub assembly (provided "As Is") that might work. It was build with Sub Assembly Composer 2014. The way it works it to calculate a number at a station based on a start and end value, a transition type and the station (chainage) value in relationship to the start and end points of the region. It has X transition types: Linear, Parabolic Out (rate of change increases) Parabolic In (rate of change decreases), Reverse parabolic (back to back), Bay Taper (from Caltrans this is a three part transition made of 2 parabolas and a linear section), Cubic Out and Cubic In.
The way it works is you insert the subassembly before a subassembly that you need to transition. You set up the start and end values and the type of transition to make. Then in the following subassembly you reference the value that is returned. For slopes, you'll have to input the values in decimal (4:1 = 0.25)
I've attached a drawing as well that shows a bay taper of a road from 12 to 24 over 120 and a daylight that goes from 1:1 to 4:1 and back around a curve (3 regions)

It does show in the palettes of Civil 3D 2011. I was wondering if there is a way to copy that subassembly from 2011 to 2013?

I'm in the process of building a subassembly in SAC. My goal is to have it transition from one cross section to another over a set length (by using station values). I can set it up so that at a certain station it switches cross sections, but I need to have a gradual change.
I've looked at other posts on here, but they all relate to road cross sections and changing slope (at least from what I saw). Any insight as to the proper way to do this (maybe with Auxiliary points and links)

A way to edit the stock Sub Assemblies provided by Autodesk?? I noticed they are compiled into a dll, therefore there is not a way to open them as a pkt that I am aware of. My intention is not to get rid of what Autodesk has provided but to add on to them.
Many times I have been asked "This sub assembly is great but can it do this?" of course it is the one thing that particular sub assembly can't do. For instance, the Varying Width sub assembly can't extend the top layer while having the sub base layers go in a negative direction.
