AutoCAD 2010 :: Keeping A Selection Of Objects Outside View Area?
Nov 29, 2011
While I'm in the "selection" mode - and it doesn't matter whether I'm preselecting objects or selecting them under some command - I pick the starting point of selection window and then I pan to another side of the drawing and there I pick the point to close the selection window.
Result: all the objects that I left behind while panning to the other side of the drawing, go out of the selection, so only those objects in the final viewing area stay selected - and it's not what I want... I want to keep all the objects under selection - including the ones that were panned out from the viewing area... I hope you understand what I'm trying to describe here....
I'm quite sure that this worked fine in previous versions, so I'm also pretty sure that there must be an option or parameter that controls my issue - I just can't seem to fint it...

I am having trouble with my selection box. Ordinarily, when I am trying to select multiple object, I can just create multiple selection boxes and it keeps adding more and more objects to my selection. However, it recently started acting funny--it stopped selecting things after the first box was drawn. No matter how many boxes I drag, it won't add any more objects to my selection.

My question is, if there any tool /command, utility in autocad to select all objects of one type at one time : for example all text objects or all dimention objects if these objects on different layers and have different properties. in my work I have to insert many blocks(not annotative) or parts of drawings which were created by other people and have different from mine settings and properties of text and dimention objects. the insertions add so many layers and objects that I spend lots of time to correct them and to figure it out.
is there any way( command, utility) to select and manage all of these objects at one time?
P.S.i think it is very unconvenient that the plain autocad does not have dimentions and text as families or some sort of groups that s easy to manage.

I have this problem with my drawing. before I decided to post here, I first ask mr. google about the problem but to no avail. anyway, here's my problem:
I have this drawing. 3d object. with multiple items. and would like to create a 2d detailed view of the items.
what i did was isolate the first item and did the base view command. after the command, I then hid the first item and isolate again the second item. but then I always get this pop-up menu that says "A model has changed" and my item is missing. I ignored the warning and poceeded with my second model and so, on. after the process I unisolated all my items and most of the drawings are there and some are lost. Is there a proper way of doing this base view for multiple objects without disrupting the previous drawing that I objects?

I've recently migrated from AutoCAD 2008 (non-industry specific) to AutoCAD 2010 so I don't know if this was an issue in 2009.
Back in 2008, when I choose the 'window' option when specifying a plot area, AutoCAD would show the workspace so that I could manually select a windowed plot area, and at the same time the whole workspace would be greyed out except the previously active window area.
This was handy, because we can have as many two dozen title-blocks (and therefore separate viewports) in paperspace, and knowing what plot area I last plotted or added as a saved page setup.
In 2010, it no longer does that. I now have to rely on the dashed border to know where the active plot area is/was (checked 'display printable area' in options>display tab) which I personally don't really like using.

We have a contractor who does drawings for us on occasion. For some reason his drawings won't keep linetype and color when switching layers. Is there a setting that will force all lyers to keep their color and linetype?

When I select a hatch or polyline or any object with grips for that matter, and hold down shift to select multiple grips on the object or objects and then press my middle mouse button to pan or scroll it to zoom, the grips that I have selected de-select, meaning I have to set up the view so that all the grips I want to move are visible before selecting them.
This is only happening on some drawings (although it is most of them) and only when I use 2012 not 2011. Which system variable it is that has gone screwy that I need to reset? or is it something else?

I am drawing an icon holder for a church. However, I got this problem, where I need to change the width of a piece but keep the height. So scaling wouldn't work as scaling would change both the width and height.
I can't use trim and cut from the middle as there is a block in the middle of it. and if I do that it will cut the block in all location.
I am not sure if there such an option in AutoCAD.

I am running autocadlt and opening up a very detailed drawing by an architect which was likely drawn on the most recent version of the autocad. When i go to select a certain area of the plan, elevation views appear in the background as i drag my selection with the mouse. The elevation views are not visible in the plan in the model space. All layers are on and unfrozen.
I am a surveyor and am trying to import the plan into my survey program (which only accepts files in autocad 2007 or earlier anyway). When I open the file in the survey program, for some reason the elevation views are showing and can not be turned off.
I tried to use the command erase, then "all" it tells me "2891 objects found, 19 not in current space". Does that have anything to do with it?
I have gone into the layer manager and selected all the layers and turned them on, and have unfrozen them
Did the proxygraphics command as well
Could it be because autocadlt???

Let's assume we have a square drawn and another smaller square inside of the larger square. If i want to figure out the area of the larger square less the area of the smaller square but adding the perimeter of both squares, how do i do that? I know i can select the square and the properties tab will provide the area and i know i can use the area command and choose "subtract area" and do it that way. But my friend tells me theres a way by just selecting both objects that the properties tab will automatically do that for me. But when I select both objects, the properties tab under geometry would just say "varies" and not do the math for me.
I don't know if this provides additional information but he says somehow both objects are linked, like a block where its really one object and not 2, but when you explode it, it becomes 2 objects and therefore will now say "varies" on the properties tab as opposed to doing the math.

I'd like to know how to align an object in model space with the edge of my viewport in paperspace.
When I draw, I like to lay out multiple complete drawings in model space, make an appropriately scaled bounding box around them, and then snap a view port to the bounding box in my layout. I usually have multiple drawings lined up in a row in modelspace, so when I want a new layout I do a Save As and then pan around in my viewport to find the next bounding box, at which point I have to resize the viewport to get it to snap to the edges nicely. I really want to be able to to it the otehr way around- while panning I'd like to be able to grab a corner of my modelspace bouding box and snap it to the the corresponding corner of my viewport window. That way making new layouts would be a snap. Is there a way to do this in AutoCAD 2012 LT?

Is there a setting that you can turn on that will ignore objects (texts, lines, ect.) that are outside the printable area? If objects are to be placed "outside the box" my titleblock gets inadvertently shifted until the objects are deleted?

I understand I can use the data bands to force the sections left and right but what about vertically? Is it possible to get the "actual" calculated area of the face of a part from a drawing view? I looked at the drawing view object in the api but didn't find what I was looking for. What my goal is, I want to calculate the actual square foot of this piece and then subtract it from the overall square foot so I can calculate waste. Perimeter's of pieces can be in multiple forms, radial, straight or a combination of the two. See image below.

I was wondering if anyone knew a way of determining how many pixels are selected (like with the freehand selection tool).
My problem is this: I have a map and I'm trying to determine the area of different countries on the map. The best I've been able to do so far is to draw a rectangular box around the countries and look at the width and height of the box and use the scale (so many pixels == so many miles) to figure the area. But some of the countries are quite irregular in shape and I'm just wondering if there's a better (more precise) way. I'd love it if I could just freehand select a country and then click a button to see how many pixels it is.

I have a lisp I use to calculate the area of an object. The section below is the area part of it:
(setq ojt (entsel "Select object to get area of... "))
(command "area" "o" ojt)
(setq oarea (getvar "area"))
I want to modify it to add the areas of multiple objects. Unfortunately it is not as simple as;
(setq ojt (ssget "Select object to get area of... "))
(command "area" "a" "o" ojt)
(setq oarea (getvar "area"))
So how would I go about doing it?

Why the dashed line (view area) changes on a page layout between plotting to pdf and plotting dwg to pdf? I have a title block that measures 16.25 x 10.25 that will print fine to pdf (for 17x 11). This same block will not print completely when using dwg to pdf.
In creating the page layout for pdf (only)the offset is .125 x .125. Once created, if I use this layout and then choose dwg to pdf as my plotter I do not have the ability to "fit to paper"
In creating the page layout for dwg to pdf the offset is .228 x .70. When bringing in the title block at 0,0 there is no way for this block to fit inside the dashed viewing line. The amount that this block extends beyond the top dashed line is way beyond what is available at the bottom.

I have a Proposed Building Pad. Grading is 3:1 on 3 sides. Grading is 5:1 in the front of the building. How do I get Grading to fill in the area at the building corner between the 3:1 and the 5:1 grading? I thought infill would accomplish this but it seems to have no effect when I select the objects. I included a screen shot and the area at the left corner of the building.

i wish to define a selection, which can be altered while preserving it's area.
for instance, assuming the selection is 6x4 (an area of 24), then any of the following selection box holds: 1x24, 2x12, 3x8, 4x6, 8x3, 12x2, 24x1.
is there any way to achieve it?

After a few hours of everything working perfectly, AutoCAD will suddenly decide to select objects slowly (for move, copy, trim, erase etc. commands). There will be a short time lag between picking a point on the screen and creating the selection box.
The problem is only rectified by switching off the pc and rebooting.

Trouble with embedded OLE DWG objects in word 2010 not opening with AutoCAD 2012
We have a user that can't open some OLE DWG files from within a word document. He had 2010 AutoCAD LT on his machine for a while then was upgraded to 2012 AutoCAD (non LT) once that was there LT 2010 was unistalled. since then he has not been able to open certain embedded OLE files within Word. Other users that have other ever had AutoCAD 2012 have no issue opening this embedded DWG files.
i found this thread (URL....) which sounds exactly what is going on with my enduser. But the fix provided is for AutoCad 2000-2012 not the LT versions.

I am using autocad 2013 primarily and other employees are using 2010. I am saving my drawings as 2010 and for me there are no issues. On the other hand people using 2010 are having objects missing in the drawing. All layers are turned on and all thawed. The primary objects missing are AEC objects. Is there a switch to show or hide these object?
