I had tried to draw in different units in autcad other than inches, but fail to find i way. I tried going on tutorials, but all they say was to type in:
"Type in Unit in command
Press enter
A option will pop up
Change Units to whichever.
Okay so I tried this, and I change it to feets. The problem is, that whenever i draw a line, it would always be in inches. I want to find a way to draw in feets, so how I can do this.
We have some machines which seem to work in imperial maesurement a dn others which work in metric. it is frustrating when trying to insert a map block that is metric and is inserting into a drawing which is set up as imperial. We have tried using the - dwgunits to change to mm, and then using insunits , insunitsdef source and insunitsdeftarget to 0, this works when the PC is currentyl in use. when shut down and restarted it reverts back to imperial setting.
Am i right in thinking this is something that needs to be done at the software installation stage to make it default to metric everytime?
I have a venue drawing that is in mm and I need to convert it to ft/inch so I can update and get dimensions from it. Can this be done so when I change the format in drawing units it will update the drawing units?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing with an old drawing I am trying to open. The problem seems to lie in that there is a hidden scale factor being applied to the dimension.
I draw a line that is 1.27 long. When I dimension the line the resulting value is .635. I have double checked that my primary units are set to a scale factor of 1 and the problem still persists. Even more strange is that if I set the primary unit scale to 1.5 the resulting dimension value is correct at 1.905, with primary scale of 2 the dimension is 2.54, etc. I have used AutoCAD for many years and never run into this issue.I am dimensioning in the model space when this occurs and using AutoCAD LT 2012.
I am having problem getting my drawings to get small. Example 1" = 25' how is that translated into an architectural units. And the drawing to be small enough to fit in the screen. Actually I have problems with any architectural units to fit in my screen.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am familiarizing myself with the existing drawings here. I am working on version 08 (was previously on 07). I opened a dwg in 08 and received an error message "Newer AEC Object Detected" stating that some commands would not be available. With no other option I opened the drawing and discovered it was in metric. I went up to the Format tab as I normally would to change the Units to Architectual and discovered that there was no option to change the units. Even typing in Units in the command bar didnt do anything. It seems as if this drawing was originally created in 07 and now OPENS in 08 but you lose commands? It used to be that you couldnt even open something it was created in a older version, no? Luckily a PC in the office does have 07 and I was able to open it there to change the units over but I cant do this every time.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have drawn a couple of small buildings. I'm using meters and plotting to A3. For some reason the in the layouts I have to put in a scale of 15:1 and 8:1 to see the building when I print.
I have looked at some other buildings that people have drawn, they are of a similar size in real terms. However they are plotting to 1:25.
I am using AutoCAD LT 2012. I am having a problem getting a drawing to be the proper scale and units. I pulled a drawing in and it has been drawn 1' = 1 unit. I really would like to get it so I can make 1 unit = 1". I need to preserve the current dimensions in the drawing.

I have a drawing that was given to me by an architect with a scale 1:250 (0.004 in viewport). The architect drew everything in millimeters and it's a Site Plan, why ? I do not know. The units in the drawing are decimal-millimeters.
The page set-up for layout 1 was for 24x36 drawing size (typ.)I know need to make a layout 2 for a sheet size 11x17 but I can not get my viewport to scale correctly. So, if a 24x36 sheet size had a VP with scale 0.004 (1:250) then what is the scale for a sheet size 11x17 ?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an old dwg that I used to add new data to. I also inserted a block produced by Revit to get a building elevation. I am not sure when or how it happend, but my drawing scale units are stuck on arch. I am talking about the bottom right hand corner of the screen on the status bar where there is the spot to set drawing scale. When I open by clikcing the arrow all the scales are in architectural units. I can add a custom scale of 1"=100', but it does not otherwise appear in the list. I wasn't going to wrry about it, but when I layout a plan/pro series they do not seem to be scaling correctly (and I cannot find a place to specify what scale I want the views to be at). UNITS, -DWGUNITS & -AECDWGUNITS don't fix it, they are all set to decimal, etc. Using the seetings tab to change the drawing settings, everything is set to feet, there is no place to specify arch units, the 100 scale drawing is shown as a custom scale.
This is C3D release 2012, on a 64bit Win7 Pro machine, everything is up to date.

Wondering if there's a way to enter imperial units in command line of a metric drawin and have it convert imperial to metric.

I work with a land surveying package. I use both AutoCAD 2006 and R14. When I export a cad dwg from the survey software and open it in R14 my drawing units are as I want them E.G Direction Control = North = 270 and should be set to clockwise. If I open the same exported drawing but in 2006 the settings change. If I create a new drawing in 2006, the settings are as I want them.
For an autocad assignment, we have been given a drawing in engineering notation (feet and inches) and have to draw it with SI units dimensions. Doing the drawing was fine, BUT, I drew it in inches and thought that I could change it to millimetres.
I have used the units command initially to set up engineering. Then after drawing returned to units to change to decimal. Dimensions turned out in inches regardless. I also tried the scale command to alter the scale, then dimension , still no luck. I went into the annotation menu got to modify primary units and alternate units and still no luck. Not even my tutorial teacher knows how to do this.
So we have started some work overseas and I have been trying to make sense of the metric units in CAD. Metric units in general, make way more sense then imperial units but how they work in CAD has been confusing.

I know that when you draw a 1 unit line in model space it could represent a 1 millimeter line or a 1 meter line and that it is up to the drafter to decide what it will be. I also am familiar with setting up dim styles to dimension correctly based off of whether you are drawing in meters or millimeters.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI sometimes am given drawings which are done in a software package called LSS of which I do not know much, these drawings are usually to show a model of a band, by using contours of a site on which I am working and are saved by LSS in a dxf format so I can then import them into my autocad drawing.
The problem I have is that I also have drawings of the same site from a surveyor which has the buildings new and existing, but they are in different units.
The surveyors drawing for instance the grid measures 100000mm whereas the LSS model drawings the grid is 100m.
This means the coordinates are different so it is difficult to match them up , the only way is I have found is to rescale the LSS drawing up by 1000, then find a common intersection i.e. corner of boundary line. This is not always very accurate.
The guys who do the LSS drawings tell me they cannot change the units to mm.

Is there a way of opening existing cmds in the visual lisp editor and edit them to do something else? I'd like to set up a lisp where 'uu' would switch the drawing units from decimal to architectural units and hittng 'uu' again would switch it back.

Without having the mapping toolbox is there any way to either convert the map units or convert the points? I'm not worried about spherical distortion as the maps are close in.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using the exporttoautocad command to convert a 3D drawing with a proposed surface (a TIN object) into a drawing with just contours (polylines with elevations). My original drawing is in feet and has a NAD83 state plane coordinate system.
Everything seems great in the exported dwg, except it is converting the elevation units from feet to inches!? A contour that was originally at an elevation of 7.0 feet, ends up at 7 inches in the exported drawing. Spatial coordinates are preserved.
I want to chose the better, to start drawing. I use inches at work, but I want to use international system for myself for personal projects
I think there is a standard unit in files imported o r exported from another soft, smaller files, easier size to process by pc, quicker units to introduce, accurate, prototyping models soft compatibility, etc.
Any previous criteria for recommendation is perfect.
