3ds Max :: Viewport Screen Dims Down Until Its Almost Pitch Black
Jul 18, 2012
Whenever I put the object setting to "realistic," the whole viewport screen dims down until its almost pitch black. It returns to its normal brightness only when you zoom in or out, pan around the view, or when an object in the viewport is modified. I've attached two images along with the post, showing how the viewport appears before and after it dims down.
I'm wondering whether this an actual intended feature of 3DS Max, or if it's a problem.
whenever I open my 3ds Max software I get a black screen in my perspective viewport. When I go to use another viewport that one either turns black as well or the program freezes. I have been using this software for the past month or so with no such problems. Now, out of the blue, this happens. I wasn't using any other programs while running 3ds Max, I never do--just incase.
What I am attempting to do is: add text, some dims., and some info. to a viewport i have added to a drawing for my field guys. I am a sheet metal worker and have produced a drawing of duct work. one viewport is a plan view, one is a swiso, and another is a left-elevation view. everything is good except the left-elevation view which I would like to add details to. I am assuming I need to change the ucs so that i can place lines, dims and text and get them to show up without them snapping to 0 z.
I have just purchased this upgrade software having used XARA Xtreme4.0 for many years. How can I change the black background screen with white writing to grey with black writing?
Since the install, 3ds Max 2012 has been acting strangely and will not display the perspective viewport correctly. It shows up as pitch black. However, when I nudge it via a "pan" or "rotate" mouse movement it momentarily displays correctly, then reverts to black.
I have installed SP1, Hotfix 1, Hotfix 2, and a new driver for my video card (Nvidia Quadro 4000).
Is there a way to "disable" the display of the viewport "outline" so that it is not seen when looking at the paper space tab on a computer screen? Kind of like how images have frames but you can "hide" them.
Whenever I attempt to marquee select (click-hold and drag a box) in Viewport 2.0, the viewport becomes a blank white screen and instead of drawing a box my mouse draws a single thick line. When I release the mouse, the viewport will not return to normal until I move the camera. It actually does perform the selection that I would expect. However, not being able to see what I'm doing is a bit of a pain sometimes.
The irony is that it actually works fine in default and high quality modes, but I'm not able to use those because the transparency sorting is really wonky and doesn't let me see what I'm trying to work on from the angles that I need. Only Viewport 2.0 solves that problem.
I had the problem of a Black screen in the LAB mode with the new camera raw (4.4.1.85) and CS3 10.0.1. I am running Windows XP with a RADEON 9000 graphics card. I am finally rid of it.
I right clicked the Desktop then properties. Settings. Advanced. Troubleshoot. I unchecked the option there (but that was not necessary as I added it back later) but what made a difference was to reduced the Hardware Acceleration by one notch. The problem is gone.
I am having trouble with the ram player in 3ds max 2013. I am using vray to render and when i try to load the last render into the ram player i just receive a black screen, although the dialogue beneath is consistent with render time, frame name etc.
I've been runing LT 2013 for the past couple of months, everything was working fine until recently. Occasionally a viewport will go completely black. I can doule-click into model space and select objects, though I can't really see them. If I delete the viewport and make a new one, the new one works fine (at least for now).
I'm trying to draw on CS6 and the screen keeps flickering Black, I've tried to switch off using the graphics card and switching to Basic mode, that hasn't worked.
Ive booted my computer up and started Photoshop. i use a second screen, its installed automatically on Mac OSX 1.8. Now, when i drag the file to th second screen, it appears to become black. if i drag it back to my Home-Screen, the content appears. Resizing don't change anything as well as disable the graphic processor on Photoshop.
A second restart solves the issue. but i don't want to restart my machine every time when i work on Photoshop.
I only installed Photoshop last week, the screen goes black almost constantly and I have to click a few buttons for it to suddenly reappear. Its running on Windows 8.
I am quite new to 3D modeling & rendering. I did a simple 3d model of a standing unit, but once i clicked on render, only a black screen appeared.
I did try to put a point light and increase its intensity but the model can barely be seen. I also created a new camera and clicked render but to no avail.
I'm a Creative Cloud subscriber, using Mac OS 10.8.1. For some reason, when I open a raw image in ACR, the adjustment screen displays a black backgrond. Black text on a black background. The slider bars show up, but I can't read the labels, and have to go from memory. I uninstalled and then re-installed Photoshop CS6, tried to find where ACR;s prefs are located so I can try trashing them and so forth - all to no avail.
My company bought the photoshop CC for my work and my notebook, where the photoshop was installed, have Windows 8. The problem is: when I go to move some element in the document (Ctrl+T), make a selection or move the document (Space+Click) the screen flashes black, and sometimes it turns black and don't go back until I move the document.
when I'm going to move a layer to some part of the document the screen keeps flashing black until I finish it.The difference is, in the Windows 7 it doesn't happen at all, the photoshop runs beautifully. It just happens in Windows 8.

I recently reinstalled windows 7, and since then I've been having two problems with photoshop cs6.The first one is that whenever I make an action in the program like zooming, using the hand tool, making strokes with the brush, I get these black dots appearing and disappearing on the screen. They are like black pixels and appear at random locations.I actually had the same problem a couple of months ago and got the advice to install the 12.8 catalyst drivers for my ATI SAPPHIRE 7870, as they are the most stable. That fixed it and I haven't had the problem until now when I reinstalled my windows and it started happening again. The only difference is that installing the 12.8 drivers doesn't fix it anymore.I tried many driver versions 13.4, 13.5 beta, 12.10 and the problem stays.I know it's a GPU problem, because when I desable the GPU in Performance, it fixes it.The only solution that I have found for this problem is to put the drawing mode on Basic in Performance and that fixes it.So this is not the main issue at the moment, since as far as I know, I can just stay in Basic mode and it won't affect my digital drawing.
The second problem that I have is that, there is a ton of screen tearing when I move my image around, like using the hand tool and the rotate view tool especially. It's like not having Vsync turned on or something, but as there is no option like that in PS CS6, I can't control that.I tried turning off and on the different option in Performance and nothing fixes it.It's interesting that even when I turn off GPU ussage, the problem still stays, so maybe it's not a video card/driver problem. So bottom line: black dots- fixed it with switching to Basic drawing mode, would like to know if there are other ways to fix it; screen tearing when moving the canvas/ image.
My PC specs are Core i3-3220 CPU 3.30 GHz, 8GB RAM Kingston HyperX, Sapphire Radeon 7870 HD 2GB GHz Edition, Motherboard - ASUS P8H77-V and I'm running on Windows 7 64-bit.
Have just installed VSx4 trial version. I previously used x3 with no problems. I've created a new project, imported an AVI and it plays fine in the preview window, in either Clip or Project mode. However, as soon as I pause it the image goes black.
This makes any kind of editing nearly impossible. I don't get the problem with the pre-installed sample video "V21". So I guess it is clip related? It plays and pauses fine in media player.
I have tried twice to export a slideshow of 373 photos from LR4, using the 1080P preset. An mp4 file of 3.21 GB is created and it opens in a Quicktime player screen. The player shows 40 minutes of playtime and appears to start, but no images come up on the black screen. The images were created from Nikon raw files, and I am using an iMac running OS X 10.7.5. I am using QuickTime Player 10.1 for playback, but I've also tried QuickTime Player 7 with the same results. What gives?
When I preview or play a slideshow in Lightroom 5 I see a black screen. I've tried it using various settings, images, lengths, and with the show saved or unsaved, all with the same result. In a preview I can see the show advancing through the slides; all remain black.
Sometimes (unpredictably) the screen isn't black, but rather two colors or color washes separated diagonally.
There are no videos in the shows. (A black screen for a slideshow with a video as the first slide is a known issue mentioned in the Lightroom Journal.)
Exporting to pdf works properly. An exported video shows as a black screen.

I've got Premiere Pro CS6 and I've started testing the use of x264 with Dxtory. The problem I face is that the footage is incompatible with every sequence preset (as far as I know) apart from AVC Intra 100 (AVC Intra 100 1080p 30fps is the one I'm trying to use). However when I use this preset all that the preview gives me is a black screen wheras the audio is playing perfectly. This isn't urgent as it's always possible to just convert the footage to MP4 with Handbrake however not being able to use this codec would be a shame, especially since I've seen others using it
My AE comp renders as a full-length video of a black screen (with audio, when enabled). Comp plays fine in RAM preview, and I've tried all types of codecs and disabling RAM intensive effects, though I'm working on a quad-core i7 macbook pro with 8 gigs of RAM, so that shouldn't be a problem.
