VideoStudio :: DVD Authoring - Widescreen Settings?
Sep 18, 2011
I have run into a roadblock -- I am having trouble authoring my DVD. I have watched the tutorials and read (and re-read) the User Guide.
I used my Canon HF S200 to shoot video of family reunions. It is about 2 1/2 hours long and I have about 32 chapters. I am ready to burn a DVD. but my chapters weren't appearing in the DVD Preview.
Further investigation showed that my project is 10.01 GBs and that my DVD only has 4.38 GB usable space.
It doesn't make sense to me. I rent Hollywood movies all the time that are nearly 3 hours long -- and those are certainly much more detailed than my little video.
I really don't want to split this project into 3 DVDs == that would be stupid.
How can I adjust settings so that my DVD fits -- and all of my Chapters appear in the DVD Preview prior to burning? I would like wide screen setting.

I'm trying to create a blu-ray movie that contains AVCHD videos of various vacations that I've been on over the past year (just your typical collection of home movies), but I've had problem after problem in trying to create the damn thing. I've used VS Pro X4 to create four individual movies (representing four different vacations, each saved as vsp files); I then created my "menu file" to compile all four movies into a single blu-ray with each one having menu buttons that then go to chapter sections. Then, due to VSX4 never completing a successful burn, I simply had it create the Blu-Ray folders and then used ImgBurn to burn them to disc.
ANYWAYS, what kind of project settings do I need to be using in VS? I will be playing the disc in a PS3 (not sure if that matters as opposed to a regular BD player). I finally managed to produce a successful burn, but it was only able to play once in my PS3 - for some reason after it initially played fine, it wouldn't play again even though there was no damage to the disc. The disc was a BD-RE DL by Maxell. I had previously tried BD-DL Verbatim discs, but I was never able to finish a burn with those.
I'm just trying to figure out why I'm having so much trouble getting my movie from my computer to a playable disc!! Dx
Here are my current project settings:NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)MPEG files24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fpsUpper Field First(DVD-NTSC), 16:9Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps) LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, StereoAnd here is a screenshot of my Share > Create Blu-ray properties: click.
Blu-ray burner that I'm using: Matshita BD-MLT U240AF. It is connected via USB cable to my Vista 64 laptop. All of my drivers are up to date.

We are now using Canon X10 HD cameras and recording in h.264 1440 X 1080. The finished product has to be MPEG2 for Public Access TV broadcast.
I can't seem to be able to adjust settings to accomplish this. Both Custom and Movie Template have the user defined button greyed out.

Corel have just released the alternative authoring module for X3, in response to our complaints about the existing one. It is in fact a reworked version of Movie Factory 7 Pro, but now has the SE (Special Edition) letters worked into its title.
I have been one of the lucky people who have had the full version of MF7 since its original limited release. (For some unknown marketing reason, Corel limited MF 7 Pro to Asia/Oceania and possibly Europe.) I also acted as one of the Beta testers of this SE release. Like its predecessors it works extremely well.
The release, unfortunately for some, is being done by the same method as the other updates for X3: via the Get More function. I have not yet been given a URL where it can be downloaded separately. In fact, I am rather doubtful that such an URL will be released since Corel obviously wish to restrict downloads to those who have a copy of X3.
I suspect a downside is that for new users of X3, it will again take 3 days for the download of MF7 SE to appear. (This strangely enough will include me as I just bought a new computer yesterday, and have installed X3 on it. But as yet -- unsurprisingly -- I don't even have the template packs showing in the Get More tab! But I guess I can install the full MF 7 Pro on this machine...)
MF7 SE has a virtually identical appearance to the full verions of MF7 and its predecessors, and a close similarity to the burning module of VS X2 and its predecessors. It will thus be very easy for users of previous versions to use.
It should be noted that the main limitation of this SE version is that it requires the user to first produce a final version of a video in X3. Then you open MF7 SE and insert that video or videos for authoring as normal. It will not accept project files from X3.

I've completed a project in X3 and burnt a DVD using X2 after reading some of the negative reviews of X3 authoring. I did burn a copy using MovieFactory 7 SE but found it was glitchy (stopping and jumping) which I attributed to my inability to lower the burn speed from 'Maximum'.
The on-screen quality of the MovieFactory DVD is better than the quality of the X2 authored DVD despite the fact that all settings appear to be identical! Looking at the titling, it is noticeably sharper in MovieFactory.
Settings on both are:
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Frame-based
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 7000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)
Also, the files on the MovieFactory DVD are slightly larger suggesting there is some extra data (quality?) on it.

I am using VS X2, very happy with it. I have been burning a few SD DVDs with AVCHD and very happy there, too. The authoring options and menu templates is quite limited when compared to my options when creating a standard DVD.
I need to know what is the best additional program I should use to have more options when creating AVCHD discs and Blu-Ray when that time comes. Is it movie Factory 7? IS MF 6 more compatible with VS X2 and will it give me the same features as 7?

I have video studio 7 SE DVD. When I capture edit and share my file and burn it to DVD, the picture looks fat and stretched whenplayed on a widescreen TV.
I have played around with some of the properties and setting on the program but everything I do has the same effect.
I can have the TV set to 4.3 and the picture is fine but of course I have the black bars on each side.
Is there a way to have it show correctly on the widescreen TV without affecting the quality?
I dont mind if it cut some of the picture out as in top and bottom, I just want to keep the picture the right ratio without stretching it to fit.
My video camera I am using is a DV cam. I think it might be half the problem as it records in 4.3 format and is playing on a 16.9 TV.

I just upgraded to the X4. I never had this problem with the X3. I use a hitachi camcorder and the clips it produces are mpeg. The settings I use on the X4 are the default settings. When I place the clips on the timeline, they show up as 16:9. When I press play, they are still in 16:9 format.
However, when I create a video file using option DVD 16:9, I get the following problem. While the clip is playing, it will start as 16:9 then change to 4:3 and then back to 16:9 again and so on.
Is there a setting that I'm supposed to change. This never happened with the X3.

I've recently changed from PC to Laptop and reinstalled Videostudio x4.
On my last PC (which was considerably older and less capable) while using the stop-motion editor, I could capture in upto 1280 x 720 resolution using my Microsoft Lifecam 5000 HD - however now with the same camera after the reinstall the highest resolution on the drop-down menu is 640 x 480 which obviously isnt widescreen or anywhere near in terms of resolution.
One thing which could be related is that on this laptop I have two lots of "program files" - "Progam Files" and "Program Files (x86)". The program itself is installed on the x86 section but when VS is searching for sample videos or overlays etc they've all needed relinking as its attempting to find them in the normal "Program Files" folder - could the resolution problem be a similar relinking issue?

My video properties are 16:9, but VSX4 isn't letting me change them. And there's no splash screen to start with.
How do I change it? I just spent weeks going through all of my photos and putting the 4:3 on backgrounds to make them all 16:9. My video is already at 16:9.

I have used on and off MovieFactory for a number of years and have been well pleased. It's simple to use and doesn't require a degree in software use to make effective DVD's playable in all DVD players.I shoot my footage with a Panasonic NV-MX300 3 CCD camcorder, which although a few years old now, can hold it's own with lower end so called HD Camcorders
My method of creating a DVD has been to capture the footage using a third-party Video editor and then importing it's export into Movie Factory and then work from there.
I have recently upgraded my version of MovieFactory 6 Plus to VideoStudio Pro X4 as this seems to better support the creation of HD BluRay discs. No I don't have the Power Pack Plug-in with my version of MovieFactory but thought that upgrading would better suit my needs.I have created, successfully a 35Gb .AVI file using my third-party NLE and it's properties are as follows: -
Stream 0
Type: Video
Codec: DV Video (dvsd)
Resolution: 720x576
Frame rate: 25
Stream 1
Type: Audio
Codec: PCM S16 LE (araw)
Channels: Stereo
Sample rate: 48000 Hz
Bits per sample: 16
My original DV footage was roughly this too. It was shot in Widescreen although the sound was recorded in 32000 Hz stereo. When I import the video into either MF 6 or VS Pro 4 the playback is in a squashed 4:3 aspect Ratio and no matter how I alter the preferences or Project Settings, before or after importing the .AVI file, it refuses to play back in widescreen. When the exported file plays in VLC Player or Windows Media Player, it plays back correctly.

Before I was able to transfer my niece's wedding video from a Sony miniDV handycam into Ulead and create the perfect wedding DVD. Now I can not remember exactly all the steps, but what I do remember is that just following the product's manual did not work. I can recall at each stage (Capture Phase etc) there was a set of steps, a recommended work flow. I think Steve (Sjj1805) might have pointed me to that work flow, and when followed exactly that was the key to getting the software to work properly (things like lower field first, capture in AVI format, select DV type 1 and so on)..
(BTW I will still be using ULead Video Studio version 10) ps computer with Ulead on is 1.79 Ghz Duron, 1.5 Gb of ram and I use an external usb hard drive to store the large video files on, windows XP pro OS.
But I'm currently using a later computer with Vista, an i7 2.67 Ghz processor, 6 Gb ram and some bundled software called Power Director to get old VHS tapes transferred via a composite video - USB interface cable into computer video files. At moment I'm letting that chug on with its default settings, so from my 3 hour VHS tapes its creating an mpeg file which it has automatically chopped up into 3 separate mpg subfiles (I didn't ask it to, I can probably find out the 'flavour' of the file), each is about 3.8 Gb. The Power Director software has got its own editing and mastering and burning facilities, but I wish to use Ulead's. Perhaps I'm (it is encoding ?) at too high a resolution, but the only quick advice I saw was to encode at the highest possible quality.
If possible I would like each of the old tapes to be on a single DVD, I can not remember if Ulead can take care of that, or you have to use something like DVD shrink?

Just a heads up on an old issue which still exists in the burning module of X4. Apparently nothing has been updated from X2 other than reintegrating it with the editing software. Unspecified is maddeningly vague but If you get this message during the authoring stage it may be due to a glitch in some of the menu templates. I have found that using certain menu templates if you uncheck the "motion menu" box it will crash the production at the final stage with this message occurring. If this happens you must leave the motion menu box checked (which is the template default) even though you aren't using a motion menu. It appears to have no effect on the finished product. I have found this glitch with a number of the text menu templates that I like to use. I know it took me some effort to figure this out back in X2.

In making movies I sometimes need to pause the DVD authoring process (Share, create DVD, with various clips in the timeline), and be able to pickup the procedure from the point of pause later. Not infrequently, after I've shut down the computer and restarted after a day or more. If I close the process, there's a message box displayed that says "saving project" but it doesn't say where nor give the opportunity for specifying a file name.
If the authoring process is re-started without computer or program shutdown and no intervening different work, the authoring process re-starts where it left off. But if there's a shutdown or diversion to other work, getting back the paused activity seems to be a lost cause: in the opening authoring panel there doesn't seem to be a 'get saved project' option available despite the various add video files/project files/other media buttons'
So, I set up a special test file with a unique name, made sure all the preference boxes pointed to the same working file space and did a sample run, closing the author process before getting to the burn stage. The save project file box appeared briefly. But . . . one cannot find the saved file in the locations specified by the preference boxes either in the main menu or the author panel preferences icon. And even if it was found, re-loading it seems to be a problem (see remark above)
This situation exists in VS11+ and also in VS14, so it seems to have existed for some time.
So, the questions:
1. under what name does the author panel save a partially completed work?
2. where does it save it?
3. how does one re-load a saved, partially authored work?

I'm using VideoStudio proX5. Previous versions of the VS program have allowed me to opt out of using a preset image template for the menu pages and instead to choose a background image of my own to put behind page headings and video thumbnails or text titles. I can't see how to do this in VSproX5. Any background image I introduce is always partly covered by unwanted areas of template and the right-click menus won't let me delete or move them to the back. I just want a plain uniform background and to be able to choose the coolur.

When I choose a DVD-menu the default chapter names are "chapter01" to chapter99" where 99 is the last chapter number. I do use the German language version. The it is "Kapitel01" to "Kapitel99".
I do not want to have the word "Kapitel" in each line of the menu. I only want to have the chapter number. "01" to "99". Not the short numbers which count from 1 again on each page of the menu.
Is it possible to change the text "Kapitel" to blank or to delet the text to get only the chapter numbers als default chapter names? Can I configure it manual in any configuration file. I think that the word "Kapitel" comes from a German language file? Can I change it to blank there?

My Viewsonic vx924 quit so I bought two more 19" widescreen monitors. Both have very uneven color and display a mustard color even after calibrating. It is almost impossible to buy a 4:3 aspect ratio any more. My Spyder is old and may need replacing but it seemed to work after reducing monitor from widescreen to 4:3. It almost looks like a dark to light gradient across the monitor.
Question: What are you doing to prevent this with your widescreen? Can they be calibrated? What brand widescreen monitor works for you with CS3?

I have some questions related to the use of Photoshop for the preparation of images for projectors and presentations.
I've noticed lately that most presentations I seem to attend are presented with images in widescreen format (16:9). I have found some higher resolution projectors available in widescreen format but have some questions.
In case I create my slides with a size of 1920 x 1080, do I need to adjust anything in Photoshop for this ? Using basic mathematics I would imagine that no adjustments would be necessary. After all 1920 x 1080 amounts to a perfect relationship of 16:9. Is this correct ? Should I expect that images projected by a projector with this aspect ratio will contain square pixels and no adjustments are necessary in Photoshop ?
Is there any situation where a pixel is project as a rectangle instead of a square and adjustments to accomodate this need to be made in Photoshop ?

I know there must be a thread or post about the best MPEG settings when you are going through the steps to burn a DVD, but did a search and came up with nothing.
Those items in bold are checked in X4.
In the MPEG properties
● Do not convert
● Support X-Disc
● Two pass conversion
● Treat MPEG audio as non-DVD compliant
● Auto fade
● Play all
● Auto repeat
Lower field first?
Under Change MPEG settings/Customize do any of you change anything? General Tab and Compression? I know to move the slider under compression to 100%. Not sure about the rest.
