Photoshop :: Use The Sharpen Feature And The Unsharp Mask Feature?
Nov 24, 2003
I like to use the sharpen feature and the unsharp mask feature but haven't gotten very good at it. Mostly I'm wondering if there is a way to calibrate the sharpen function so that it doesn't sharpen quite so much each time I click it.

I will get into the sharpen dialogue box, set the correct values, the picture looks fine at this point, then click OK. After that, photoshop will then reduce the level of sharpening I have added. I have no idea why it's blurring my sharpening but it's driving me mad. Does anyone know what's causing this?

I'm a pro user of MS Paint at work but was wondering if there was Photoshop feature similar to the Paint one whereby you can cancel out the white background of an image automatically? So, instead of pasting a picture and it's square white background you just paste the image?

Still getting mixed results using "Refine Mask" feature. I have seen the tutorials on this -Russel B, and Juleane Kost. Sometimes the results are outstanding, other times I have to resort to contrast masking, etc. I currently have a series of portraits shot against blue (basically a blue screen). Some of the subjects have good hair contrast (very dark brown or grey). There are many parameters to set in the refine mask dialog. I need a clean, sharp silo of hair edges.
I have tried many combinations, and typically use "smart radius". But I am particularly disappointed with the results of one subject who has grey hair -good contrast against the blue. They mask tool keeps including too much of the BG blue. I have also tried decontaminating colors, but prefer to do that later with a layer set to "color". Some of the tutorials sneer at the use of Contrast Masks (which I typically get good results from). But the the Refine Mask options often produce flawed results -which is surprising with these blue screen portraits.

I have been working with some GIS data in the form of SHP files in autocad map 3D 2011. On one of my layers I have started getting "Feature was not saved in the target feature source" when I try to check in my data. In total there are 308 errors in the data table, all of which were features I deleted. They all have a featID of null and I cannot remove them from the data table. I need to fix these errors without going back and starting over.

I am running Autodesk Map3D 2012 and I need to label my feature points no matter if they overlap or not.The Map3D documention refers to a check box that will allow what I believe I need- but I cannot find the checkbox in the style editor. Here's a clip from the Autocad documentation:
To allow labels to obscure points on the selected layer..In the Display Manager , select the point layer. Click the Style button. In the Style Editor, click Allow Other Labels To Obscure Feature Symbols On This Layer.

I have labelled an FDO feature which include a TEXT BACKGROUND (Mask) white in colour to make the text stand out. I attempt to savecurrentmaptoautocad thinking that the Text Mask will come across as a HATCH Patterm but nothing is coming across when I open the DWG file. I have been through all the options to try and get the mask to appear in the new DWG file to no avail

in another thread, spectra mentioned to set the radius at the resolution/200. so i assume this means if its 72, then divide it by 200 and set the radius at .36. I was just curious as to whether or not anyone knows where this number comes from? I tried it, and it works great. Just not sure why it is so.

I am using photoshop cs. After layer adjustments I have tried to use the unsharp filter, but nothing shows up in my unsharp mask window. By trial and error I have found that I can do unsharp if it's the first thing I do, i.e, no adjustment layers. Is there a reason for that or am I doing something wrong ?

Most of the photos I shoot end up getting resized for the web. I have heard it said that it's best to use unsharp mask, after you do the resizing. Still others have told me to unsharp mask, then resize for web.

Does anyone have any advice on what Unsharp Mask settings I should use? Percent, Threshold and Radius? I use settings of 75% on images taken with my digital camera, but what about Theshold and Radius? Where do they come in?

This tutorial applies the filter 'unsharp mask' on the 'stone texture copy' layer (pic 1). After that the same filter on the layer beneath 'stone texture'(pic 2). After this: Edit-Fade Unsharp Mask (pic 3+4). I'm doing exact the same steps but I don't get this 'Fade Unsharp Mask' but only 'Fade..' and this is greyed out. If you notice he uses the unsharp filter on the stone texture and not the masks.
I tried this in cs3 and cs2 and both give the same result.

When I use Unsharp Mask, the window pops up across part of my image. Cannot drag it away from the image. I noticed the title "Unsharp Mask" is not highlighted which is a clue that it can't be moved. Are there any particular settings I should look into?

Was attempting to clean up a photo enlargement last nite utilizing 'Unsharp Mask'...inadvertantly changed the 'Threshold' setting in the dialog window...& failed to notice what this setting was previously engaged at.
[this happens to me every so often, aamof.]
so...I'm using Photoshop CS3. What is the default number for this setting ???
(or...perhaps more importantly...how does one return *all* such dialog settings in Photoshop back to factory default ???)

I had taken a photoshop class and learned that there were some "works most of the time" settings for unsharp mask in photoshop. Unfortunetly for me, I not only lost the book that came with the class I've forgotten the settings entirely. If there is a thread pertaining to this or if someone can help me out I would appreciate it. I did look and even searched (twice!) first, but with the wealth of info here I may have passed by it.

Is there any third party plug-in that recovers this functionality? Why is this effect removed? Is there another way of achieving an unsharp mask effect applied to bitmap images?

I'm using PE10, and usually start with the "Quick Edit" tab to do a "Smart Fix" where I can select a desirable fix. Sometimes I additionally do Shadow adjustments and/or Highlight adjustments, but not much else. Then go to "Full" edits.
- "Enhance - Auto Contrast" does tonal corrections as I understand. However I usually see no difference after doing this. Is that because when I did the Smart Fix, it is essentially doing the Auto Contrast as one of its adjustments? If so, is it just a waste of time for me to do the Auto Contrast if I have previously done a Smart Fix?
- As the last step, I usually use "Enhance - Unsharp Mask" on my photos with Amount = 70, Radius = 2.0, and Threshold = 0. Are those reasonable numbers? I understand that beginners tend to over-sharpen their photos. I've played around with various values, and these numbers seem to have worked for me, but would just like other opinions since I don't have that professional eye as to what is a great photo. I make sure that I zoom in to print size or more when looking at the results of sharpening.

I noticed that in the switch from 7 to CS, the 3D render filter was replaced by fiber filter. Is it gone for good or just misplaced?
Kinda sad, I really liked how it bent graphics in a more true to life way than with pucker and bloat. Has anyone come across a plug-in that does 3D goodness? I don't want to sit around and wait for Lightwave to render the simple shapes that PS used to do in shorter time.

I just recently upgraded from CS2 to CS4 and am finding it changed enough that it's slowing me down. I have a couple questions I hope someone can answer.
What is bothering me the most is that when I left click over an image I no longer can duplicate it, or change its size. I'm stuck with going to the menus and that takes longer than what I'm used to.
I've also been unable to figure out how to split the properties panels that now want to form two columns instead of one, and I haven't figured out how to break any given panel up and use only the part I want.

i use picasa for organizing and basic editing and photoshop for more heavy duty editing. most often i end up using "fill light" in picasa and then saving changes and then re-opening the pic to edit more with photoshop, a process which sacrifices more photo quality then it should, because of the re-opening. i tried to find equivalent feature for "fill light" in photoshop, but the closest i got is the gamma correction, which kinda does that, but fades the colors. "fill light" does the same while keeping the colors alive. any suggestions which feature/combo to use in photoshop in order to achieve the same effect as picasa "fill light"?

I have a header which I would like to make some modifications to, the author of the header stated this If you want to make changes to the header for buttons are anything else you can open the file up in Image Ready and the slice guides that I used should be visible to you. That way you should get an exact slice guide to match how I sliced up the header area.
