Photoshop :: Tinting Shadows With Gradient Editor?
Mar 17, 2013
I recently saw a presentation that spoke of tinting shadows on an image by converting to black and white, then creating a gradient map layer. From there you went into the Gradient Editor and place the cursor directly beneath the gray scale, and starting from the black end, move it toward the white end until the arrow cursor changes to a finger pointer. You then use the value in Location...
Â
Unfortunately, every time I do this my cursor is ALWAYS a pointing finger. I can put in color stops, but I don't believe that was what the technique used... I've tried using alt, ctrl, and/or shift in all the combinations I can think of, but no matter what I do, I always get the pointing finger instead of the arrow cursor.
Â
what I need to do differently to get the Gradient Editor to show an arrow cursor until I reach whatever point I should be at when it changes to a pointing finger? Does it represent the darkest black in the image, or what?

I've been experiencing problems with the Gradient editor since I got PS and the problem is that whenever I create a gradient through the gradient editor and then load it, it does load it and instead just duplicates the ones that already exist.
Â
I save all gradients at:
Â
C:UsersRHAppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop CS6PresetsGradients
Â
However it does (mostly) work when I import pre-made (from web) Gradients.
Â
I don't know why this happens but it also did the same thing when I had CS5.5!

Iwhen I do a shadow I put my subject (selection) on a new layer. I then use Command Delete to turn it black. Transform>Distort to lay it down and place it where I want it and finally the layer opacity and Guassian Blur to feather it. If you really want extra realism you should taper the shadow from dark next to the subject to light at the far end. Finally my question - How do I taper the density of the shadow from dark to almost completely transparent?

I am using CS6. I have created some text with a gradient fill. I have converted it to shapes before addin the Fill. I appear to get a slight black shadow arround the letters. This appears to get worse when I Export it to png with a transparent background. This black shadow is not a stoke that I have added.
Â
How can I remove this black effect?

I can easily create a preset gradient, but I see no editor anywhere. Everything I see online shows an editor UNDER the presets. CS6 for Mac is not showing this.

I have PS CS4 Extended and Vista. I am having problems with Gradient Editor. When I create a gradient and use the opacity stops they make the gradient bar transparent in the required parts, but it has no effect whatsoever on the image, nor on the bar in the adjustments panel. I feel there is some obvious solution, but it escapes me. Also, when I click on a preset like "foreground to tranparency", my image goes completely black..again, no transparency.

I've upgraded from Photoshop CS to CS3 (been a user since ver 4) ... but I noticed that the Gradient Editor has disappeared. Well, I can open it up, but there's nowhere to edit the colour stops! It was DEFINITELY there and usable in version CS, but when I opened the same file in CS (which is still installed on the pc), the Gradient Editor has also now lost the colour stop editor! I've tried looking for it in the palettes, looked for it in the Windows and View dropdown menus, double-clicked the Gradient button in the Toolbox, clicked on everything from the Gradient Toolbar, clicked on the top righthand arrow, clicked on the gradient swatches, but a big fat zip naadaa! Anyone ever experienced anything like this before? I'm wondering if I'd be better off just uninstalling and reinstalling everything and making sure I then also un-install the older version to make sure there aren't any conflicts, but I actually PREFER to keep CS available, just in case there are any problems in CS3 - such as this one. Unless, of course,

I have PS CS4, and vista home premium. I am playing around with the Gradient Map, and everything is fine except for one thing. I know I must be doing something wrong but I can't put my finger on it. In the Editor, when I create a gradient with some transparency, the transparent bit never transfers itself to my image.
I have tried using the opacity stops to set opacity to zero, and the gradient bar is almost totally transparent, yet this has no effect whatsoever on either the image or the bar in the adjustments panel. There is no tick box for "transparency" such as there is in the gradient tool option bar so what am I doing wrong??

I have a photo frame and subject in particular color. In essence, this is a color and texture swatch. What I would like to do, is to change the color (or tint this photo) and retain the pattern/ grain of the product.
I have tried a few things, but so far, nothing is convincing. In the end, I want to change this Tan sample to Blue, Red, Black and White.

At some point I appear to have messed up some setting I don't know about.. Whenever I paste into PS, it looks like its behind some sort of sepia tinted screen, and my bushes have the same color on their edges..

I tried to get into the IRC to ask this question but I kept getting a 404 message. My question is....is "filling with transparent" the same as "tinting"? (explanation: In the image editor that Photobucket used to have I could change the color of something in a picture without losing the original shading, etc. They no longer have that image editor so I am looking for an Open Source program that is easy to use and has that feature.)

Make Named Color local to Frame/Layer
I understand how to create a localized (to a layer) copy of a named color but how do I move its associated tint or shade or linked relationships to the new layer?
Let's say I have 5 circles on Layer 1. Circles 2-5 are all Tints of the color of Circle 1. Now, I copy all five circles to Layer 2. I select Circle 1 (Layer 2) and make it a Named Color Local to the layer (Layer 2.) That option is in the Color Editor. I see how I can change Circle 1 on Layer 2 without changing Circle 1 on the original layer, but the other circles on Layer 2 have lost their Tint relationship to Circle 1 (Layer 2) and do not change in the manner that they continue to change on Layer 1 if I alter Circle 1 on Layer 1.
Is it possible for the Tint, Shade, Link relationships to survive the Make Named Color local to Frame/Layer option? (Page197 in Pro6 manual,)

I saw one video in which a Photoshop geek quickly launces his raw editor by clicking on a small, illegible icon in the lower right-hand of his Layer Icon in his Layers Dialogue but of course he doesn't explain how that works, and there is no such corresponding little sub-icon in MY Layers icon, and the word Raw doesn't even seem to show up anywhere in any menu. I know this has to be possible. I can open a raw file (.nef, in this case) the obvious way, but after switching it over to Photoshop I can't switch it back to the raw editor (?)

Is it possible to create a gradient similar to radial gradient, except that the shape is other than circular? This image would be the starting point, but I would like the white part fading to black to be another shape (say, a rectangle, a banana, etc.).

We've just started using an attribute in a dynamic block and I'm curious if there is a faster way to edit the text, like how you just click outside the dtext or mtext editor to save and exit. the editor.
We only need to edit the value field, not any of the other attritubes. I really like how the dynamic block is saving us some time, but the outdated editor is really irritating, and it's not always convenient to hit Tab then Enter on the keyboard.
Is there perhaps an alternate editor, or a way I can edit the value text in the mtext editor by default rather than opening up the Enhanced Attribute Editor?

I found great use with the Drop Shadow ability. Especially when used with text; a nice soft, lighty blurred drop shadow would do wonders for the overall image.
But too many times do I see graphics with that ugly, heavy, and greatly offset dropshadow. Sure enough it actually DETRACTS the realism from the image.

I want to place a sunlit object from one photo into another photo where the sky is gray and the light is diffuse. The surfaces which are half sunlit and half shadow in the first photo would appear unnatural in the second where light is diffuse. Does anybody know a technique where these light extremes could be evened out on the object?
