Photoshop :: Select And Erase Properly To Get Transparent Background
Jun 30, 2012
I have made a selection on my photo and erased the background making it transparent. Now when I fill the background with white, I see portions of my original background showing through. How can I easily reselect the background and erase properly? When I use with the Quick Selection or Magic Wand tool, it doens't select all of the transparent background. I seem to remember a tip where I used another feature of CS5 that darkened the transparent background so much that it was eay to erase the missed background.

While making the background of an image of my son transparent, I realized a couple of days later that I made part of his hand transparent. Is there any way I can make his hand NOT transparent?
I don't believe there is, since the image data is lost, and I had to delete all the layers except for one, to reduce the file size.

I remember being able to select anything on the canvas with my Quick Select tool in CS5.5 Photoshop Extended. Recently, making the switch to CC, the Quick Select tool will show my slection as I drag along the canvas, but once I release the mouse, the selection seems to be reduced to the visible pixels. I was intentionally trying to fill the transparent sections with my effects as well.
Mind you, the magic wand will select transparent pixels just fine, but it also adds unintentional sections which is irritating. I should probably also pint out that I already looked into the "lock transparence" option in the layers, but I did not activate anything of the sort.

Is there a good working technique to erase background around strings of hair on a person's head?
Anyone know of any professional filters that do this?

Just downloaded/purchased DesignerPro X and do not understand how to use this tool. I followed the instructions in the help file (as well as an old man can!) and cannot get it to work. For instance, I cannot get the color tolerance/fade controls to move off of 20/25% respectively. If you specify which photo you are using in the Design gallery, I will follow along.

I am trying to change the hue of the sky in a photo. Following the instructions in the Help file, I first used the Color Select/Erase Tool to click on the sky in several areas to erase it. The instructions then say "Now select the Make Mask button on the Infobar." My problem is that I don't see a Make Mask button. I see a Make soft mask button and an Edit Input Mask button. Since the instructions go on to talk about these other two buttons, it seems clear that they are not the Make Mask button. So where is that button?
I might add that I am also looking for a way to make just one part of a graphic transparent. Would this Color Select/Erase Tool be appropriate for doing that?

I have been trying to use the color select/erase feature in Xara P&GD9 (version 9.1.1.28178) on my Windows 7 64-bit computer. I can use this feature to change the appearance of the sky in a photo -- for example, to change it from something drab to an attractive blue. I've now tried to do this in several versions of two photos, and I've been completely unsuccessful. Following the instructions, I first used the color select/erase tool and clicked on the sky in several places to erase it. I then clicked on the Make Soft Mask button and saw that everything but the sky was now pink. I then went to Enhance in the Photo Tool and selected the Hue control. But no matter where or how much I changed the Hue and/or the strength, nothing happened. I was left with the same drab sky I started with. I've tried to show what I've done with four thumbnails.

find that this tool is less than stable for their use? When it works, I'm quite happy. It's just that it seems to work <20% of the time for me.

what I'm doing right now is trying to erase the background of many different photos and combine them (as different layers) into one image. I finished two layers and just as I was about get going on my third layer, I made a mistake and did something to the threshold. I didn't remember what I had it on (well, it was on the default setting) so i put it back to 141 and decided to continue with my work. but then I realized that I couldn't select anything.

I have this photo of me and my son that I put on my "about" page on my website, I cut the background out using the background eraser tool, and it looks great on my website, but if I put it on an all black background I can see where some of the pixels that should have been erased have not been, I have spent hour cutting out the image, is there a faster more efficient way of doing this in the future?
The photo is at: [URL]............
- You will see that I have cut out some of my son's hair, and didn't do the best job cutting out the image because I don't necessarily have the "steadiest" hand.

I am having trouble getting the erase tool to erase part of an elipse shape in Corel Draw. I select the erase tool and click and drag across the part of an elipse that I want to get rid of (so far so good), then I release the mouse and an outline of the nib tool is left behind.

I'm looking at tutorials on how to add strokes to text (I downloaded it today) and they say to use the color select tool. In their demonstration, when they select text, it has the normal dotted lines around it. For me, when I click it just has a thick border around it and it tells me to move my mouse to change the threshold. It won't select the text, just change the threshold when moving my mouse from left to right.

i'm having a lot of troubles with a free rig i downloaded at creativecrash [URL]. I'll keep it short as i have quite a lot of things to explain: I animated my shot, and everything was ok. Now i have to shade/light/render my shot using vray, trying to create brand new vray materials; I started from my robot-character. Here comes the problems: - I can't select the polygon geometry(i asked the rigger, and he said the geometry were imported as references at rigging time). There are no geometry layers in reference or template, then there must be somthing else causing me the problem. I can access to the object via hypershade, i can click on the shape node and i can see the geometry selected, but then, when i try to access faces, i can't select them!in no way. This means i can't create selections for materials, and so i can't shade as i liked. I tried to selecte faces using the select by materials feature in the hypershade (as the character has some pre created basic materials)but again, i'm not free to assign materials where i want, and i just can use the pre-existing face selections and work on those, but it's not enough for me. I was asked to cut out the background from a logo to make it transparent so the logo would look nice on a variety of backgrounds. I've been given a good quality jpeg file.
What I did was I selected (by colour) the background (white), inverted the selection, copied it and pasted as a new image.
It's all fine (the logo itself doesn't have any other elements) but there's still some whiteish/greyish outline around certain elements of the logo.
If I were to do it manually, it'd probably take ages. What would be the best way to accomplish it?

How can I select ALL non-transparent pixels from a layer?
- Ctrl + click doesn't work (it seems to have a 50% tolerance - my opacity 7% and 40% pixels don't get selected);
- The magic wand tool with 0% tolerance does work (when I click on a transparent pixel it selects ALL opacity 0% pixels around it and then I just have to inverse selection), BUT my image has a lot of holes with transparent areas and selecting them one by one would be tedious.

I have a file with 2 layers, one (Layerone) that is blank, i.e. no fill or anything. The other layer (Layertwo) has text. I save the file as a .gif, select transparent, select matte as none, and keep getting a white background when I upload the file to my website.
I also tried copying the text Layer to the clipboard, creating a a new file with the background set as 'transparent', then pasting the text only layer into the new file. I still get the white background when I upload to website.
It can't be this hard to get a transparent background. What am I doing wrong?
