Photoshop :: Removing Lens Blur Halos In Shallow Photo
Jul 4, 2013
I'm working on a portait where I want to give it a more shallow DOF (depth of field) than originally shot. In other words: I want to turn the background blurry while the foreground and subject should be sharp. I decided to use the Lens blur filter (Filter-Blur-Lens blur) for this.
Basically I just duplicated the image to a new layer, turned that layer into a smart object, added lens blur to it, then used a gradient filter on the mask in order to make the blur fade away in the front (just like a camera lens wide open would). Finally I used a brush to carefully remove (mask) the blur from the subject, revealing the (unblurred original image) bottom layer.
The problem is that the blurred layer also introduces a "halo" around things which isn't very attractive (see screenshots below). Is there a way to make the background blurry without adding halos? I've tried Gaussian blur as well but the same problem was there. I'm using Photoshop CS4 on a Mac.
Original image
Duplicated layer blurred (lens blur) -notice dark "halo" above hair
Masked to reveal sharp (original) layer for subject. The halo is of course still there. Not very flattering

I seem to have lost lens blur. It's no longer in the drop down of Blur in filters. Does this have something to do with smart filters? Perhaps I've unwittingly converted my filters and lost lens blur.

I am looking for the Lens Blur filter in Photoshop CS3 and I simply cannot find it. I'm sure that it is just me overlooking things, but if anyone could point me in the right direction, you would be of great help.

I'm pretty much a complete newbie to PS and I'd like to do some tilt shift editing.
The problem is that the lens blur option is greyed out. Can anyone tell me how I can get around this?
I can use all the blur options apart from the lens, radial and smart blurs.
For reference I'm using Photoshop CS (version 8).

I go through the steps and while in the lens blur screen, it looks like it's working. Then I hit OK once I'm happy with my level of blur but then the blur doesn't apply. I've redone this a number of times, rebooted, etc. Has worked a couple times but mostly doesn't. Is this a bug?

I have a rough shot (for me anyway) to clean up.
1) There's a part of a Lensflare that travels across a characters face, which I need to remove. What is the best way to deal with this?
2) I also need to change the Lens Streak on the street light to one that's horizontal.
I'm attaching a low res Quicktime of the shot - (608kb)

Using PS CS4 on XP. I just got a job back from the printer company & I am noticing some lines that didn't appear on my print out here (on xerox color printer machine) to compare. I didn't really catch them on the proof either, but they used an epson proof and we printed on 100# gloss text stock for the final.
What I have going on is a gradient background (using shape layer and gradient layer style effect) from a white to a light tan. Top to bottom on a regular Letter size sheet. In the upper right hand corner I have a image of a face that had that same light tan in the background. I faded this image into the gradient background by using gaussian blur.
This is not very noticable in the file, but I can tell that it is there...you have to really focus your eyes to see it, but it's there, a line going around the image where the gaussian blur is. I'll attach a photo of the edge. I guess what I'm saying is it is not smooth - the image edges being blurred into the gradient background, but printed off a regular printer, it looks smooth. Is there anything I can do to prevent this in the future?

Im trying to motion-blur the background on an automotive photo I shot and didnt slow the shutterspeed down enough. So, using the quick selection tool, I selected the car, zooming it in to make sure I got every pixel, then Cntrl-C, then Cntrl-V to save as a layer. Then, I reselected the background layer and applied motion-blur which got me the effect I want.
The problem is now the edges of the car have a ghost outline which will decrease if I lessen the blur to under 12 pixels. Which defeats the purpose.

I am trying to remove a serious lens flare from a photo, with varied (and not very good) results.
What would you say would be the best technique to remove this lens flare? work with the photo and demonstrate the result by posting the image here. I should probably point out that this was not shot with RAW.
I have attached a smaller sized version of the image here, but i have also posted the original, full size image here: [URL]

I've recently been touching up some old pictures of my Dad so I have better quality pictures of him. I've used the standard tools in photoshop, some of them automatic and I've produced decent results for myself but I'm stuck on a particular picture which has too much lens flare
I've posted a picture of what I've done already so you see how little I'm changing and in the picture of him in front of a mirror, I don't want to change the detail, just try to enhance / remove blur and most all all, those sodding lens flares?

I sadly do not have Photoshop C5 so can not easily remove someone from photos. I tried the cloning tool to just place the background over the person to be removed but it doesn't look very nice. (I'm just starting to use Photoshop).
It is a lake scene and the person to be removed is on the far right, not in the middle of a group or anything.

So I have this photo. I see that yes I had to snap the picture before the fawns bounded off so there is a branch there. Would it be too difficult then to remove the branch?
What tools might be used to do such a job? Also I am hearing that perhaps the discoloration is a smudge on the lens. Does that seem correct?
