Photoshop :: Lighten A Background Without Masking Subject?
Oct 2, 2012
I have about 100 images similar to the example below where the background is a neutral grey, darker at the edges then becoming lighter as it reaches the image subject. I'm looking for a way to lighten the grey background without have to mask the item in the center.

I took a portrait type of picture with a flash. The people are ok, the background is to dark. How can I lighten the background.
In the past when I took pictures for our awards, I used the blur method because I didn't lie the busy background. The background style on these pictures are ok. I just have a picture that I want to lighten the background.

I have a picture of a baseball player with grandstands and spectators in the background. To focus attention on the subject, I want to blur and slightly darken everything but the player (subject).
So I duplicated the background layer and created a mask over the player. Then I selected the background layer, added lens blur, and darkened it.
The problem is that this step blurs the image of the subject in the background, causing it to extend out beyond the masked image of the subject on the foreground layer, creating a ghostly "halo" effect.
I've tried creating an inverted mask on the background layer, but that doesn't work.
Photoshop PS6, Windows 7

I want to edit a photo of a car so that the car remains in colour and the background changes to black and white (or should I say mono?). I have seen this several times and wanted to have a go myself. I understand that it can be done in Elements using layers?

When extracting a subject from one image to another using the Quick Selection Tool and Refine Edge:
1. When is it better to make a selection of the background, make a layer mask of it, invert it, load the mask and use Refine Edge VS. just making a selection of the subject and using Refine Edge?

If I have a red flower on a multi-coloured background, and I want to make the background black. I select the flower using the magic scissors (tried selecting by colour but nothing happened), invert, then whichever method I follow to achieve the black background, it's always the flower that changes colour, not the background. I've tried not inverting it, it gives the same result. I can only change the colour of the selected subject, not the background. I have followed all the steps in different tutorials, always with the same result. GIMP 2.8.4.

background Masking (for PS7),
cutting out object from its background.. Most tutorial I've browsed just uncomfortable, misty, poorly illustrated or unwarrantedly complicated and confused.. Good tutorial must be detailed, with exact amplification where every element located.

Try plotting to a PC3 format with Line Merged option on under the properties for the plotter. Note how the contours continue through the text.
Try plotting with Lines Overwrite. Note how the contours don't go through text.
Any users out there saying they cannot use the "Lines Overwrite" option and need something else so they can still use the Lines Merged option and have their contour text looking good. How to get this in a SP or HF soon. Otherwise it may be deferred to 2010 and so on and so forth.

I have been using background masking in Mtext to cover up the mechanical piping in our drawings. It works fine in AutoCAD, but we convert the drawing to pdf and then send the pdf to the printer to make prints. Now
the background masking is not working. You get a line going through the text.

With PS CS, I have noticed in Lab color space the lighten and darken blending modes for layers are disable. Also, if an RGB picture uses them, they are converted to normal blending mode upon conversion to Lab. Any idea why this limitation? And any way to circumvent it?

I haven't used PDF Underlays very much as we're always given CAD backgrounds. In this case, I used them to quickly put in since we won't get CAD files. However, they are scanned PDF's so they are essentially raster images. They have jagged lines, etc.
Is there a way to just lighten these when plotting so I can still use them as my background? or should I just bite the bullet and trace them to get actual ACAD lines to be able to control in plotting?

Way back I did this but now cannot duplicate it. I'm using PS 5.0. I changed a photo to B&W and then I think I used the eraser to change my granddaughter back to the 'colored' version. It's like what is done in a TV commercial.

I have a picture of my Dog that I took in front of out old house. It has cars and other junk in the background.
Is there any way I can create a mask around my Dog so that I can cut out that portion and paste it onto a better background ?
Coming from a background in Micrografx Picture Publisher (which is no longer made) in that program all I had to do was:
1)define a basic mask
2)click on the edit mask tool

I have a seascape photo with an island in the middle of the water. think of a black triangle surrounded by sparkly waves. I want to isolate the exact shape of the island so ONLY the island can be lightened a bit. Is there a nice video tutorial showing what that process is? tried some things in photoshop like the lasso tool but I could not get the island shape traced exactly enough. something similar in Photo paint?
