Photoshop :: How To Change Save-to-web Action To Not Overwrite Existing File
Aug 30, 2013
I have created an action script where I change the color of the objects in a photo and then have the action automatically save for web as a PNG-24 image. My issue is that the save for web continually overwrites the existing file at that location. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening?

I did a search around, and did not find the answer. Basically I have attempted to create an action in Photoshop CS6 which will save a file in the tiff format after i crop the image. I want the file name to be the name of the image (which is supposed to change depending on name of the image) like this:
1280x720_MGXXX.tiff, where, in my case the XXX represents DIFFERENT NUMBERS.
Â
I want to apply the action to one image at a time. Each image has a different number (name). I record the action, add the 1280x720 text to the image name in the Save dialog. I am saving the image in a different folder from the source file. The source file name is _MGXXXX.tiff (again XXXX is a number like 2220...).
Â
When I run the action on a file, say "_MG2221.tiff" it adds the 1280x720, and saves the file. When I apply the action on the next file (_MG2222.tif), the action overwrites the existing file, 1280x720_MG2221.tif, with the image. The action always uses the name I entered in the Save dialog!! I think I was able to do this in CS4 and CS5.Â
I want to be able to open a file, crop and adjust it, and then save in a diff location with 1280x720 pretended to the file name.

How to overwrite an existing watermark. For instance, let's say I have a watermark called "website" with opacity of 50.
Â
If I want to change that opacity to 60, I go to Lightroom->edit watermarks (or pick it straight from the export menu), select that watermark, and change the opacity to 60. Now I have an option to save the watermark. I don't want it to be a new one, I just want it to overwrite the existing watermark with the name "website". But when I type that name in, it says that's already in use. So now I have "website 2", "website 3", "website 4", etc which are all the same watermark with small changes, because it wouldn't let me overwrite any of them when I made a change.

When going to Output and Export to PDF, you are unable to overwrite an existing PDF, you need first to delete the file.

I made an action that does a bunch of stuff, and then saves as to a folder. How do I change the save to destination within the action? Every so often I need to save to a new location.

I just re-built my PC with Vista x64 and re-installed PS CS3 from scratch upgrading to 10.0.1 from the auto update. I need this for LR2 to integrate.
Since the re-build (I was on XP x64 previously) one of my actions which includes a 'Save As', which saves the image to a specified directory and as a JPG (not the directory the image opens from), is unexpectedly displaying the 'save as' dialog, waiting for manual input. This opens on the source image directory, suggesting it's ignored the suggested destination path, and it suggests the PSD file type rather than JPG as suggested in the action. It seems to be looking for input simply because it thinks I'm trying to overwrite the original image file.

Presently if I insert a block into my drawing - and a block with the same name exists - the newly inserted block takes on the definition which exists in the receiving drawing . How do I reverse this i.e. I want to be able to overwrite the existing block definition by inserting the new wblock version.

We do hundreds of images for our main client for print purposes. As part of the work, they want all of the final images run through Save for Web saved as both a .jpg and .png file at 1000 pixels wide.
Â
The problem is, if you try to create an action for this, the size the action saves is a percentage and not a pixel width. So it's impossible (so it seems) to save an action that sets the scale as a proportional resize with a fixed output of 1000 pixels wide. Since all of the images vary in size and it insists on saving the size as a percentage, you can't create an action that will work.
Â
I've tried to see if there's a way to modify the action to change the output to a pixel width, but can't see how to do it. Is this even possible? It would save us TONS of work not having to manually open each image twice and saving for each format.

Working from Lightroom in PS - trying to record action to simply flatten layers and File Save back to Lightroom. PS records specific file path of original image used when action was recorded. Is there a way to eliminate this specific path?

I've got Photoshop CS4 and have created an action. However, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to save the action to a file so I can share it with others. The action converts a PSD to JPG and exports it for the web. How do you save an action so you can share it? I don't want to share all of my actions -- just this one.

I've run into the Photoshop CS5 bug whereby an action with save-as truncates the filename (and adds " copy").Â

For the original bug, see for example:

I have PS v7.0 for PC.
I want to create an “Action” that changes the File type from .psd to .jpg, and then use the “Batch” command to change a whole folder on files.
Here’s what happens so far: I open a file. Then using the “action” pallet, I record the following:
Save as…
I change the “Save In” folder to a different folder.
I change the “Format” from Photoshop (PSD) to JPEG (JPG).
Under JPEG Options, I use the default file size and hit OK.
I them hit the Stop button.
Seems simple enough. And it works for the first file.
But if I use this “action” on a second file, it writes over the original file.
So, how do I create an “action” that allows me to automate the “save as” function and change file types.
This must be a common operation. I have 300+ .psd files that I need to change to .jpg.

'm trying to make an action to automate the saving of one photoshop file to multiple different jpegs. Basically what I am doing is producing team pictures from a psd template. I will do player #1 then save as #1jpeg, #2 save as #2jpeg, etc up to 20 players. I tried to make an action but it won't allow me to insert a file name. It would be straight forward if I could get a stop in there. how I could automate this

needs to overlay a grid over a photo and then save it as another file. In CS5.5 or earlier, no problem, but in CS6 it is not working for either of us.Â
The batch action (run from either Photoshop or Bridge) stops and prompts at the Save command every time no matter what format we save it in (psd, png, jpg, save for web, etc.).
I have been through the Web and the Adobe Forums and cannot find a work around for this. He cannot just hit enter everytime the popup window comes up because he has over 2700 photos to put this grid on.

Every now and then I go back and try to use publish to speed up printing but I always go back to plotting one by one.
I work in a housing construction office and I have 10 separate drawings side by side in model space for house plans that I need plot separate to give to certain people. My problem isn't that I can't publish them separately its that I can't save them over existing pdf's individually predetermined.Â
Q1. do i just have to go through and change every layout name before or after i publish?
Q2. how do i change the output publish location?
Q3. can each layout be saved to a different existing pdf and remember it?
Q3. can i save these setting across to a new drawing?

For the past couple of months we have noticed we are loosing files on the save command with no warning or notice. When the drawing is saved and then closed we discover that occasionally the file did not save and the original version of the file is lost. Sometimes the original version gets saved as a bak file but not always. No warning message shows up to inform that the command was not completed correctly, it looks like the save took place.
Recently we switched to Windows 7, 64 bit machines. All three machines this has occured on match and are saving back to 2010 version. One of the machines is running a trial version of Architecture 2011, the other two are running network licenses of Architecture 2012 with Service Pack 1. The files being lost are all located on a server in the same folder structure, not in the same folder. That server is new and has some sort of mirroring set up to image files to multiple locations? This phenomenon has only been noticed to occur on saving a file from Architecture. We do save other file types to the same folders and have not noticed any going missing. To my knowlege the files never show back up (one of our IT staff suggested the mirroring might be causing a delay in the file showing up in the folder.)

I'm trying to set up an action to save a batch of files I creating using the variables tool (as detailed in this video: [URL]), I'll go into the Actions window, and record myself saving the current file in .Ai format, and then stop recording. Seems pretty simple, but when I set that action to run a batch on my dataset it saves all the files without an extension. Am I missing another step where I set the file format that the action is supposed to save with? I'm confused. I've tried this using a few different file formats and they all come up the same.

When I record a save for web action that exports my artboard in 3 file sizes. 100%, 200% and 400% it works for the first few files.
Then suddenly after a while the first export changes its width and height from 100% to 111%, but not just 111% width and height equally. No it pulls it out of proportion too.
Â
When I manually enter 100% again it all pops back to the correct aspect ration. The 200% and 400% still behave as expected.
Â
If I rerecord it it starts working again. But that defeats the purpose.

I have an image which is simply a one color gradient, with transparency from nothing to something. I would like to be able to access the existing gradient on the image and change only the color. I have hunted high and low and cannot see how to do this.
(I am familiar with how to make a new gradient and how to change the colors in a saved gradient via the gradient dialogue. But for the life of me, I can't see how to access an existing gradient on an image and change only this one parameter.

Lightroom v5.3: I'm a long time DNG file user for Pentax and Nikon cameras. I recently discovered that about 300 of my RAW Nikon files already imported into the Library are NEF files instead of DNG files as my other 5700 files are.
Â
I know that I made an error somewhere along the way, but- Is there an easy solution to converting those existing NEF files to the DNG format?

I am attempting to execute a set of actions containing two "Save" commands. The first works fine while the second does not. (The destination folder is ignored and the file is saved in the same folder as the first Save.) The only difference I can see is that the second "Save" is modal and the other is not. The fact that the destination folder is contained in the action makes me think this ought to work and I'm missing something obvious.
I have a JPG of the action set but I can't see how to attach it....

I've created an action that uses the save for web dialogue to optimise images for the web. When I use the batch command to process a full folder of images, even though I have "Override action "save as" command" checked, it ignores this and still uses the location that was used when the action was created.
Â
Apparently this is a known issue in CS6 and previous versions but whether this has been fixed in Photoshop CC?

I have created an action where I do some stuff with the picture and then I save the file to a shared network drive while using the "Save for Web" function. While recording the action everything works fine but when I run the action I got a error that Photoshop can't save the file because the Path does not exist / Is unavailable. It is stuck while he want's to run the "Save for Web" part of the action.
Â
I tried the mapped path (Z:files...) and the UNC path (\fileservusersdjametfiles...) but both did not work.I am using Photoshop CS5 and Windows 7 Professional (64Bit).

In ACA2012, we cannot use the Publish command to overwrite an existing DWF file of same name, for instance you publish a set, then need to re-publish and overwrite the earlier version. We get an error message that the DWF is currently open in another program...when it clearly is not open anywhere and Design Review is closed. We have several servers running different versions of microsoft server, but the results are the same to any of them.
We do NOT get an error message when publishing/overwriting to the C: drive, only a network path. Also, if we use the Print command instead of Publish, well it only does the current page but it DOES allow the networked DWF to be overwritten.
I am puzzled by what could be the difference in that Publish will not overwrite a networked DWF file yet Print will?
This has never happened to us in previous versions of ACA or Design Review.
