View 2 Replies View RelatedI have one catalog that contains about 300 000 pictures that are located in about 14 different hard drives. Some hard drives contains modifications that were done in Lightroom 2 but most of my recent work is with Lightroom 3. It is getting way too big now. Doing my backups takes forever.I want to separate my catalog into 14 catalogs, one for each hard drive. I don't lose my metadata, selections, collections, and histories.
I have tried to do copies of this catalog (one for each hard drive). Go in one copy and then delete all the pictures and folders from the 13 other hard drives but it is was taking forever and it ended up that my catalog was corrupted. I was also thinking of "exporting this folder as a catalog" but this mean exporting the pictures as well which is not what I want since it will be relocated and it will also take forever to do.
I create a Huge catalog in Photoshop Elements and need to split in small ones is this possible?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Lightroom 1. I tried to merge catalogs by importing a catalog into a master catalog, but there were some problems. The one I noticed immediately was that the collections are not correct. It imported the collections, but for example one collection now has only 4 photos when the originbal had 140? How can I fix that? (Although not necessariy a problem, it seems to have the wrong number of photos imported too. It says the previous import was 3175 photos when it was more like 10,000.)

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have over 40,000 images in one catalog, which is by date, within month, within year (back to 2005). Example: Today's images are set to import into folder 2011/Sep/02. I realize this is crazy and I'd like to split my existing catalog into one for each year. I recognize that to find an image from a year in the past, I might have to load and look into multiple catalogs, but I think the ability to back up a catalog at the end of a year and create a new one will make backing up WAY more effective than having, as it were, "all the apples in one barrel."

The thing is that I lost my main catalog in a hard-drive failure and my last backup is too old. Fortunately I always "export a folder as catalog" into the original pictures folder, so I always keep starring, color editing, etc.
What I would like to do now is to import each of these litle catalogs into one new main one, without having to import each at a time, but all simultaneously, which would save me an enormous amount of time.
Is there a way to do this?
I merged a small catalog with my master catalog and I am unable to open the master catalog. The error message reads "The Lightroom catalog named “master_catalog-2” cannot be opened because another application already has it opened.". There are no other applications running the catalog.

I am a freelance photographer (12 years) and cinematographer (5 years) so I have an extensive library of images and video clips.
My photo collection is about 55k images and my video collection about 10k.
Right now I am trying to get everything into one catalog - but I am seeing performance issue quickly rise to the top.
Would it be better to have multiple catalogs? Can I search across catalogs?
Should I be looking somewhere else for better performance?

I have been very reluctant to bring edited PSD master files back into Lightroom, to the point where I regularly purge from the catalog those that accidentally find their way in there.
I'm a relative newcomer to Lightroom, having relied on a Bridge/ACR/Photoshop workflow for many years. So partly for historical reasons, raw files and PSDs serve separate and very different purposes in my workflow. Previously, everything went through Photoshop to produce a master file, from which I then batch processed for different output. I still have about a terabyte's worth of old PSDs containing layers, smart objects and whatnot; some of them very complex files. And I still occasionally need to build complex PSDs for special purposes.
Anyway, that's the background. What I want is to use keywords and all of the other wonderful Lightroom tools to organize them.
But I just have to be able to separate DNG/NEF from PSD at a glance. Or instantly filter one or the other. There's just no way I can spend time looking at individual file extensions in the filmstrip to try to figure out which is which. It has to be obvious and instantaneous, deadlines are always tight, and I'm always in a rush. Color labeling could work, but I already use that for picks vs rejects, so that's not an option. Flagging or rating seems not quite obvious enough.
So what's the best way to deal with this? At the moment I have them in separate directories, but this is getting increasingly complicated and confusing. I soon need to clean up and bring everything into a single Lightroom catalog.
I know the two normally go together, but is it posssible to put the Lightroom catalog on a separate drive from the previews?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy latest battle with PSE11 is trying to access my catalog in PSE11 via the Catalog Manager but it doesn't show up in the list.
The catalog is named My Catalog 2 is located at C:ProgramDataAdobeElements OrganizerCatalogsMy Catalog 2. It is the only catalog I use and is the one that opens up when I launch Organizer. But, for the life of me, I can't get it to show up in the Catalog Manager. The only catalog that shows up is the original catalog which is at a different location and was created when I installed PSE11 on my new computer (Thinkpad W530, Windows 8). I've tried the Custom Location option and browsing to the location, but still no dice. This catalog has thousands of pictures and was converted from my previous PSE6 catalog. How do I get the Catalog Manager to find my current active catalog?
How can I get catalogs from Elements 11 to Elements 12? Only one of my old catalogs transfered to Elements 12.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just downloaded and installed the trial versions of PSE 11 (Photoshop & Premier). I have been running PSE 10. I created several catalogs in PSE 10. When I go into the catalog management menu in PSE 11, none of the catalogs are listed. If I perform a restore, I have to grab the backup files. When I do that, there are no tages appearing.
I would expect that PSE 11 should know where previous catalogs have been placed with the previous version and automatically have them show up in the catalog management/selection screen.
I have version 5.0 and version 9.0. I would like to merge 5 and 9 together and use in version 11.0.

I have 2 issues with Organizer, but I guess both might be linked:
1) I am not able to create more than one catalog. Or let's say I can, but no way I can select them afterwards. Only the last created one gets opened for imports. If I create a new catalogue, I cannot re-open the old one. It is not even listed as being available despite it is well present on the disk (I checked). Since the available catalogs are not present, no way I can try to use 'optimization' ot 'repair' features.
2) When organizer is started, it starts consuming huge CPU cycles, between 30 - 90%...
This looks to me like a bug, but since I cannot even select created catalogs
I have 2 Catalogs. There is nothing on my Organizer screen to allow me to switch between them.No menu bar anywhere--Menu bar used to be at the top of the screen.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to have more than one text placement inside of a single layer, but be able to maintain and move each of those separately from the others? From what I have seen, each new Text item gets its own new layer. If I want to document an image with seven points of reference, it's absolutely crazy that I have to maintain seven layers, each with an integer 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7. What would be much more maintainable is to create ONE layer and name it "MAP-NUMBERS" and then have seven integers placed into that one layer. I would then want to be able to move - say - "2" around separately from "4". Then making all of the numbers appear or disappear becomes as easy as hiding or showing one layer.
Is there a way to do this with any version of Photoshop?
I would like to move elements of that painting onto a separate layer. What is the best way to do this? An example of this would be a painting with the moon in a night sky. I might want to move that moon object into a separate layer.
My reason for wanting to do this is I want to change the background of the painting without worrying about doing fine details around the objects I am moving. A second benefit of moving the objects to a layer is that I can then easily move the location of those elements in the painting around, trying to reposition them.
can I get all of the elements I am moving onto a SINGLE layer AND still have the ability to move those elements around separately? If I want to move 10 elements in a painting to a separate layer, it is REALLY inconvenient to have to put those into 10 separate layers and constantly maintain naming of these different layers.
I have a PSE10 photo catalog and video catalog on my Win'7 64-bit PC. The catalog files are on my C drive (default location) and the media files are on a different internal "D" drive.
Each catalog currently resides in its own folder in the default location on C drive, and each catalog file is named "catalog.pse10db". It is curious that each file is identically named; I didn't do that, PSE did.
I want to move the photo catalog and video catalog to the internal "D" drive so that when I backup the D drive, the catalogs and media files are all backed up together.
How do I move my catalogs from the default location to a different location? I have read the "Backup and Restore Catalogs to New computer" info and think it may apply here, but I want to be sure before I try anything.
In ##backed up and restoring a PSE6 catalogue from an XP based PC to my Vista based laptop I chose the Restore to New Location / Maintain Existing Folder Structure option and both the catalogue files and the picture files were successfully created in my main Pictures folder. The new catalogue was recognised in PSE6 and all files and thumbnails seemed to be connected. However, in retaining the original folder structure I had inadvertently created a lot of unwanted subfolders from the old XP address and the cataloguing info was not in the default /Program Data location where my other catalogues reside. I therefore decided to first move the cataloguing files, and tried to use the Catalogue / Move command for the purpose, thinking, erroneously as it turned out, that this would move only the cataloguing files, and I could then eliminate the unwanted subfolders in my picture file structure by a subsequent drag and drop approach in PSE6.
Catalogue / Move process as to a destination folder for the move, as it never asked, but it seems as though both cataloguing and picture files were moved by the command to the Vista default /Program Data location. I'm not sure whether I asked to make the catalogue available to all users or just myself when asked, but think it was probably the latter. The move resulted in all of the thumbnails in the catalogue becoming disconnected from the picture files, and I then carried out a Reconnect All process which has worked for all but a handful of files.
The problem is that whilst I can see the picture folders I've moved in the Folder View within PS6, and most seem connected to the catalogue thumbnails, I cannot find them, or indeed the /Program Data folder that they sirt inside, by searching outside of PS6. It is as if they don't exist, or are hidden from Windows Explorer. All of the old picture folders have also disappeared when I look at the Folders View within PS6, except for those that contained the few picture files that are now disconnected (and these are greyed out). I could try to drag and drop the new folders back to Pictures within PS6, or try to delete the catalogue and files entirely, and begin the restore process again.
I migrated from PSE8 to PSE11 with 4 catalogs. PSE 11 works okay with 3 catalogs while crashing with the 4th one.
Symptoms:
- Whe starting Organizer with the catalog it starts indexing of person-data. This stops at 0%. PSE does not respond any more (kept it for 3 hours) and needs to be terminated via Task Manager.
- When starting Organizer with Shift pressed, I can repair and optimize the catalog. When indexing similarity data (German: "Visuelle Ähnlichkeitsdaten erneut indizieren"), Organizer crashes after 100% - crash means: Organizer disapears from desktop and tasklist.
I also tried to repair and optimize the catalog in PSE8 beforehand. This works fine.
