View 10 Replies View RelatedMy intent is to use LR 90% of the time strictly as a cataloging application.
I am a freelance photographer (12 years) and cinematographer (5 years) so I have an extensive library of images and video clips.
My photo collection is about 55k images and my video collection about 10k.
Right now I am trying to get everything into one catalog - but I am seeing performance issue quickly rise to the top.
Would it be better to have multiple catalogs? Can I search across catalogs?
Should I be looking somewhere else for better performance?
Windows 7 - Quad CPU's - 8gb ram - 7200rpm drives.
I have one catalog that contains about 300 000 pictures that are located in about 14 different hard drives. Some hard drives contains modifications that were done in Lightroom 2 but most of my recent work is with Lightroom 3. It is getting way too big now. Doing my backups takes forever.I want to separate my catalog into 14 catalogs, one for each hard drive. I don't lose my metadata, selections, collections, and histories.
I have tried to do copies of this catalog (one for each hard drive). Go in one copy and then delete all the pictures and folders from the 13 other hard drives but it is was taking forever and it ended up that my catalog was corrupted. I was also thinking of "exporting this folder as a catalog" but this mean exporting the pictures as well which is not what I want since it will be relocated and it will also take forever to do.
I have been very reluctant to bring edited PSD master files back into Lightroom, to the point where I regularly purge from the catalog those that accidentally find their way in there.
I'm a relative newcomer to Lightroom, having relied on a Bridge/ACR/Photoshop workflow for many years. So partly for historical reasons, raw files and PSDs serve separate and very different purposes in my workflow. Previously, everything went through Photoshop to produce a master file, from which I then batch processed for different output. I still have about a terabyte's worth of old PSDs containing layers, smart objects and whatnot; some of them very complex files. And I still occasionally need to build complex PSDs for special purposes.
Anyway, that's the background. What I want is to use keywords and all of the other wonderful Lightroom tools to organize them.
But I just have to be able to separate DNG/NEF from PSD at a glance. Or instantly filter one or the other. There's just no way I can spend time looking at individual file extensions in the filmstrip to try to figure out which is which. It has to be obvious and instantaneous, deadlines are always tight, and I'm always in a rush. Color labeling could work, but I already use that for picks vs rejects, so that's not an option. Flagging or rating seems not quite obvious enough.
So what's the best way to deal with this? At the moment I have them in separate directories, but this is getting increasingly complicated and confusing. I soon need to clean up and bring everything into a single Lightroom catalog.
I know the two normally go together, but is it posssible to put the Lightroom catalog on a separate drive from the previews?

Do I have to physically move the catalog from the PC to the mac and then apply the upgrade?
I had LR3 running on my laptop, but due to slow performance, I got a new machine and just installed LR3 and would like to move the Catalog over. I backed up ALL of my pictures to the new machine already (JPG, PSD, RAW, etc...) So I have all of the files on the new machine, but I'm not sure the best method to get only the RAW files back into LR3 like I had them on my old machine.
I can do an import of each folder, but that would take forever!
In Lightroom 4, I would like to copy a catalog from machine 1 to machine 2, and while someone else is working on machine 1, I would like to create a collection on machine 2, and then just move that collection back onto machine 1's original catalog. The user on machine 1 is also making collections, so if I just copied the catalog back from machine 2 when I was done, it would destroy the new collections on machine 1, so I think I want to just move the collection I create on machine 2.

If I add the MBP and run a Mac version of LR on it can I still move the catalog back and forth between the Mac and Windows machines? One option is to use Parallels on the Mac but looking for all the alternatives and potential issues before I bite the bullet.

The catalog contains only images located on a NAS.
I can connect to the NAS from both computer, but when I'm trying to ´import the catalog I get the message "Lightroom could not import this catalog because of an unknown error" I use the same versions of Lightrrom on both computers.
I re-organized my PC. Now, I have all of my photos on my "C" drive. They used to be on another drive. After importing from my old catalog, I lost all of my develop work. My photos are all unchanged from when I imported them as raw files from my camera. Here are the steps that I did:
1. Export the 3.4.1 catalog
2. Format the hard drive and re-install Windows
3. Install a fresh version of Lightroom 4.4
4. Import from my 3.4.1 catalog ("Import from another catalog")
How can I recover my work?
I just added to the catalog a series of folders containing pictures.
What I was hoping is that Adobe LR was going to copy all those pictures and put them into "my pictures- > year -> date" so that I will have all my pictures organized by date. [ t)
However, adobe LR have just added all those pictures using their original location (i.e. the folders where i had them), and therefore the automatic organization by dates that i was expecting didn't happen.
I would like to move all the pictures to the "date system".
How do I move the catalog and previews in the default location to another drive?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been copying my raw files to two different hard drives using DNG. I discovered last night that the backup file stays in the proprietary raw format. I have been operating under assumption that the backup would be in DNG format. I have been backing up my catalog onto the extra hard drive assuming if my primary drive failed, I would then have the back up hard drive with the backup catalog and things would be fine.
Is the only way to ensure my work is "safe" is to backup the primary hard drive onto a secondary hard drive? Can the dng files along with the catalog be backed up onto an online "cloud" type of service? Will the data be changed so I cannot recopy it and reuse it if my primary drive fails or my house burns down? Any recommendations for a cloud type of back-up service? Is there another methodology that should be employed to keep my photos and catalog data safe from a catastrophe?
I understand how Smart Previews work. What I'm unsure of is...will we be able to edit these files remotely, separate from the host computer? For example, I'm an image editor and I live 500 miles away from the photographer that I work for. Can they (the photographer) download the images after shooting, create Smart Previews then send me the 'Smart Preview' folder of images, I edited them on my own computer then return the Smart Previews back to them fully edited?
