Photoshop Elements :: Convert To Black And White Option Is Greyed Out?

I applied a photo filter to my image (as a layer). Now the Enhance > Convert to Black and White option is grayed out. If it matters, the pencil tool is active. I don't need the pencil tool active for what I'm doing.
When I select the background layer, the Convert to Black and White option is available.
What do I need to do to make the Convert to Black and White tool available on the photo filter layer? How do I turn the pencil tool off?
I'm using PSE9 on a Win7 computer.

When I use the 'Convert to Black and White' menu option in Photoshop Elements 10, it does a good job, but it still leaves the file in RGB format (Colour)??
I am working for a Publishers, and I keep forgetting to convert the file to Grayscale after running the Wizard.
Wouldn't it have been easier to add this as an option at the end, and have they done this in Photoshop Elements 11 (or later...)?

Using PSE 11, I select several images to create a panorama, then select Enhance -> Photomerge and the "Panorama" option is greyed out and not available.

I have converted the same image from color to black and white using the channel mixer and using the black and white adjustment, and there appears to be a slight, almost imperceptible, loss of sharpness in the image converted with the channel mixer. Is there any research showing that a loss of sharpness will, in fact, occur when using using channel mixer when converting color images to black and white?

I want to covert a color photo into black and white but bring back a certain color. How many ways are there to do this? Which method is the most professional (as in provides the most professional finished product) I've read about doing it using the paint brush to bring back the color, also the color selection tool.
The particular image I'm trying to achieve this on is not so simple. The part I want to bring color back into is a dripping pink ice cream, so there are small drips and blobs, often with fair skin color in the background. Ice cream is dripping down face and hands and body and I want to preserve these details accurately. The bits I need to bring back aren't large blocks of color so I'm finding it very difficult to achieve a professional look.

I scanned a black and white print in color and am trying to replace all the black with dark green. Been trying for hours in elements 9. This is all so hard. Just to ask this question I have typed it into 3 different screens, set screenname, many other hurdles.

I want to convert a black and white tif image to colour. I opened it in Photoshop, changed the mode to RGB colour/8, saved it as psd, but when I use the Replace Colour dialogue box, I just get my colour showing as grey-scale. What’s the correct way to proceed?

I'm using PSE8. I was using Filter>Render>Clouds and it was working for me. I must have done something because the clouds that are rendered are black & white not Blue and white. My photo is of course a color image. How I can correct this or what I need to do to get back to the default setting that will render blue & white instead of black and white?

there are two steps that have to be done:
1) convert the new digital image into an black and white one with that special look (is it the contrast, that makes that special b/w-look?)
2) make it look like disturbed or cracked, cut u and incomplete around the corners, a look, that must be the result of that old technique they have used for the photos at that time.
Is it possible to recreate that look for images, done with a digital camera today?(I have added a example image of an "old west show" I did, that is one of the images I would like to manipulate)

I'm running Windows 7 64bit, and I have 2 AMD Radeon 6950's in crossfire. It has only been a couple of months since I used CS6's create 3D extrusion layer, and it used to work fine, but now it's greyed out no matter what type of layer I'm selected on. Photoshop is seeing my graphics card just fine [URL] and even says that 3D is an enabled feature if I mouse-over the Graphics Processor Settings box. I have the latest 12.8 AMD drivers. So, something between Photoshop and my graphics card are no longer playing nice - maybe an AMD Catalyst software setting? Although I've made sure that all my settings were restored back to default. I should also note that all other GPU enhancement features that I'm aware of seem to be working fine (like the quick zoom rendering, etc.)

Until recently I have been able to use my CS2 Photoshop. I believe the only change I have had was adding a new monitor. I began toget an error message when I started Photoshop, and was unable to use Photoshop at all. Then after reading information, I changed the monitor profile. After this, Photoshop loads without any error messages, but all the menu items are greyed out and unavailable. In addition the red exit button at the top right hand corner of my screen is also unavailable and greyed out. The only way I can nowshut down Photoshop is through Task Manager. I am able to use all the other programs in CS2 without any issues.

Why does pse 10 use black background with white text. Its harder to read and customers have complained, why use it when everyone knows black text on white background is easier to read. For example this discussion board is after all black on white!
I am using the trail version of pse 10 and its great but I don't think I will purchase because of the hard to read text.
