Photoshop :: Could Not Use Type Tool Because Of Program Error
Apr 13, 2013
I'm trying to do some work on a file I set up months ago. First, I tried to copy some text to paste into another program. I got this back:
"Could not use the type tool because of a program error."
I'm using a font called Hit the Road. Interestingly when I changed it to Myriad Pro it let me copy and paste. But - when I went to save the file out as a PDF, I got a similar message:
"Could not save as “xxxxxxx.pdf” because of a program error."
I've tried clearing my preferences and restarting the computer. I haven't uninstalled PS.
I'm using:
CS6 13.0.4 x64
And I'm on a:
MacBook Pro 13" Retina running up to date Lion
2.5 GHz i5, 8GB memory, Intel HD Graphics 4000 768 MB
Whenever I try to use the type tool in Photoshop CS5 (Mac) I get the message "Could not complete your request because of a program error." I already tried cleaning out the font cache and I validated all the fonts installed on the system and all passed.
Mac OS X 10.6.8 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 8 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
Working on a document with many layers, I kept getting a Program Error when I typed the double quote character into the type tool. This was not the usual Program Error in that it was recoverable. Other times I've seen the Program Error, Photoshop would stop responding & require a restart.
In this case, all I had to do was delete the double quote character, and Photoshop was back to normal. Hmmm...PSCS5.1 on a Mac Pro with Mountain Lion.
When I use the quick selection tool (or when I use content-aware scaling) I get an error message saying "could not complete your request because of a program error." I am working with NEF files, 4 GB of RAM, fast machine with plenty of scratch space, Radeon X1950 crossfire graphics card. With small .jpg files, the problem doesn't occur.
I want to create text on a circle path, so drew the circle, went to the "type on a path tool" and clicked on the circle. I keep getting the message "can't create type". I have tried to use the direct selection tool to select the circle first and without the direct selection.
I have been away from PhotoShop for awhile and have not used CS3 for over a year. When I try to use the clone tool a pop up tells me unable to use tool due to a program error. How can I fix?
I got some problems with pen tool. When I want to use pen tool and select shapes I get error which says "could not use pen tool because of program error" I really dont understand whats happening with photoshop.
I am currently using PS CC and can't use the eye dropper tool. I get a dialog box that reads "Could not use the eye dropper tool because of a program error"
I have tried the tool from many angles thru the color picker, shifting the brush tool, ect. I get the same message. The eyedropper works for me in Illustrator.
You don't realize how necessary the eyedropper tool is till it is not working! I have rebooted, tried 64bit and 32, uninstalled CC and and reinstalled with no luck.
the problem seems to happen when I fool around with my projects layers (turning turning them on and off) all my tools lock up and when i try to click back onto my work.
I get this error "Could not use the brush tool because of a program error"
Then I need to save my work and restart PS to work on it another 5 mins before it locks up again.
Everything had been going good. Yesterday I wanted to use theType tool. I have attached a screen shot 1 and will refer to that. As you can see the New file was created using the PS defaults, I created a box to type in. and then everything goes completly to H*ll. I included the Character screen so you can see what I was trying to do.
First of all the cursor is WAY WAY ABOVE THE BOX, I had defined 24pt type size, Bold and you can see that it just goes crazy. There is nothing I can do. So I tried just using the Type tool to add some type. Same thing. Screen shot #2 shows that. So I opened PS CS6 and everything works as designed.Something has happened to PS CC.
I have been re-saving many of my PSD files using CS3 image prosesssor with compatibility mode turned off. They have simply been saved again as PSD files into a different folder - no changes to the original PSD files. This has worked well and reduced file sizes by up to 50% (I had compatibility mode turned on previously).
of the 60 files I have processed, 3 will no longer open , I get a message that says "file will not open due to a program error."
these files have only ever been used in CS3. , they are quite large from just under 1GB to 1.5GB, however other similar large files have processed successfully. I have re-tried without success.
I still have the original files so no data loss is involved.
Illustrator is better for type. But I'm comp'ing a web design using a Google font called Nobile. The screencap below shows some greek set in Illustrator (top) and the same greek set in Photoshop (below). You don't have to be a typophile to see which one looks better!
One interesting thing I discovered is that using the "sharp" antialias in PS will create the same messed up x-height rendering that Illustrator does. It only looks good in "smooth" or "strong." Perhaps there's a similar setting in Illustrator to change the antialias?
For now I'm just going to place a .psd into my Illustrator file but I'm thinking there's GOT to be a way to make this type look good in Illustrator.
I'm using AI CC now, but I noticed this problem in earlier versions of AI: If I want to place a one-word label on an illustration I move the type insertion cursor to a speific point on the screen image and click, but then the flashing insertion point, where the label will actually start, pops up elsewhere, usually a line or two above where the cursor was, and a pica or two to the left, forcing me to type the label, then move it into position rather than simply typing it in the right place and moving on. The problem is merely annoying, but I'd like to fix it. It's probably a matter of ignorance-I simply haven't read the right documentation, but I don't know what to call the problem. Where can I find out how to change the position of the cursor relative to the insertion point?
My Type Tool does not select type by double clicking or click and drag. (Windows CS 5 V15.1). This is what I have tried so far and the problem still exists.
Check preferences for "Text": "Select text-object by path only" should be off. Checked. It was off. Didn't fix it. Check the toggle for Show/Hide Edges in the View menu. Cmd(Ctrl)-H. Checked. Edges Showing. Didn't fix it. Trashed my Prefeerences. Didn't fix it.
Working on a poster in Illustrator. Have added area type, using the type tool. Now I'd like to increase the size of one line. I can't select or edit any of the type with the type tool. I moved the type to a new layer, saved, closed Illustrator, restarted my Mac (OS X 10.7.4). Looked in preferences, in case there's an issue there. No luck.
By the way, I also don't see handles when in the selection tool any more. Don't know if that's related.
the type tool won't let me insert any type whatsoever in JPG or PSD files. I click the type tool and then click somewhere on the image and all it gives me is a dot but no flashing cursor. As I said, resetting my prefs/settings while starting up Photoshop did not help.Another weird thing it does is that when I go to Canvas Size for a medium sized image, it says that the width is 588 inches and the height is 288 inches.
I am using Windows 7. How do I associate a file type (.jpeg) with Gimp 2 program. I follow easy steps in Windows, but I am unable to locate (.exe) file for Gimp. Where is the .exe file i need to complete this?
I'm using cs3 on a WinXP computer and over the last few days I'm all of a sudden getting a pop-up box stating that a (some tool) could not be used because of a program error. Does anyone know what this is all about and have any ideas on how I can fix it? I've restarted PS and rebooted several times and that does not help.
I have Adobe Photoshop CS2 and today when I tried to use some actions on my photo a pop-up came up saying the request cannot be made because of a program error? Has this happened to anyone before and how can I fix it? It would stop the action like halfway and not continue.
tried to open the following image formats this morning...bmp., tga, exr and everytime photoshop would give me this error" could not complete request because of program error" and when I checked the open dialog box those formats were not in the list.
We're having an issue with saving files using Photoshop CS6. Several of our users are unable to save, specifically on our server. They all get the "Could not save because of a program error" message. It doesn't seem to happen on the computers running Lion, but most of the people running Snow Leopard have the problem.
We've tried resetting the preferences, repairing permissions, etc. I read somewhere about unchecking the "ask before saving a layered tiff" button, but none of them seem to solve the problem.
