I occasionally use GIMP to burn-down parts of portraits that compete with the face. For example, bare shoulder, midriff over-light, hands over-lit.
The skin ends up looking greyish, not like less-lit skin. It works not too badly visually, as the emphasis is on the face, but fails on inspection.
I have tried the burn tool and just plain old Brightness, both on a selected area.

I am in the process of making a photobook using Lightroom and discovered when I reached page 240 that I couldn't add any additional pages, much to my surprise. I was surprised because I knew from Blurb's website that the limit for standard paper is 440 pages and mistakenly assumed that this limit would also apply within Lightroom. I did more research online and found many others being surprised by this limitation after spending hours and days on a photo book. I will likely work around this by exporting from Lightroom to .jpg and uploading to Blurb, but that will take extra time and effort and reduces the appeal of using Lightroom to create a Blurb book. I had also tried exporting from Lightroom to .pdf only to find that the .pdf format exported by Lightroom is not compatible with the requirements of Blurb.

This page [URL] has an example of a 3D book that I would like to know how to make on GIMP or through some other means starting from a square 1D cover.
I would also like to know how to make a good CD image from a square book cover:
This isn't a great example because it doesn't show image transfer to CD without distortion: [URL]

I am trying to up load a 40 page 12" x 12" photo book to Blurb from the book module in Lightroom 4.2. It renders the pages and then having rendered the cover gets stuck, about 50% to 60% through the process. None of the photographs are starred or colour coded. I have uploaded successfully from this iMac in the last few weeks.Â

I purchased Lightroom 5 and am creating a photo book through Blurb. I accidently erased 38 pages, so after I re-created them, I clicked on Create Saved Book, which put it in Collections. Now I am trying to work on the book again, and can open it, but when I go to the Library of photos, Lightroom automatically repopulates a new book with all the photos in that file and won't let me put them in the book I saved. How can I get this partially finished book so that I can use it?

I have a jpeg photo taken with a digital camera. The problem is that it appears different depending on what software I view it with. When I view it in Windows explorer / Windows picture and fax viewer, the colours appear very bright. When I view the same image in other software such as ms paint or firefox, the colours appear much duller. Originally I thought this photo was the original from the camera but after looking at the Exif data it showed that the image had been edited in Adobe Photoshop. I don't know how the image was edited in photoshop. A raw image directly from the camera does not have the same problem - it looks the same in windows viewer and other software. What could have happened to this jpeg in photoshop that would cause the colours to look brighter in windows viewer but not other software? Sure a jpeg is a jpeg and should look the same in all viewers?

With my upcoming upgrades, which video card would you recommend?
Won't be doing any gaming, just the odd streaming or instructional video and PSCS3, and no 3-D graphics.
Specifically, is there any reason to go with up to 1 gig?

I just installed CS on my PC and for whatever reason my guides don't function correctly. For every file I have opened, the guides appear behind the image, rendering them pretty much useless. This does not even seem to be an option, so I have no idea how to correct it. Does any one have any idea how to fix this?

Although I use Civil 3d 2013, I have never used the map 3d program. I have GIS data and need to perform queries but I can't seem to figure out how to get a query to work.
I have the drawing open and the data is displayed. On the Task Pane I right click on "Current Query" and choose "Define". On the "Define Query of Attached drawing" dialog under "Query Type" I want pick "Data" which opens the "Data Condition" dialog. At this point you can choose Object Class, Object Properties, Database Link, Object Data or attribute. When I pick any of these options I get a "No Tables Found" message at the bottom of the dialog box (with the exception of Attribute). I'm therefore left with nothing to pick for the Object Data Fields.

UNDERSTANDING RESOLUTION: A beginner's guide
Resolution is responsible for much confusion to beginners in Photoshop. I am providing this guide in hopes to clearing the smoke and answer any questions you may have.
SCREEN RESOLUTION
Before we can get into the 2 most common resolution-related questions, ("How come my images come out smaller when I print them?" and "How come my images come out pixelated when I print them?"), we need to get a grasp of what SCREEN RESOLUTION is.
Your monitor is displaying a certain resolution that you may have commonly heard. Popular ones include "640x480", "1024x768" and "1280x1024". Let's take the latter; this means your monitor is showing 1280 pixels worth of information WIDE by 1024 pixels worth of information HIGH.
IMAGE RESOLUTION
Most web-based images are created with an IMAGE RESOLUTION of 72ppi (Pixels Per Inch). In order to determine the DIMENSION of an image, you merely take it's size and multiply it's resolution. Let's take a 4" x 6" image in Photoshop. To determine it's DIMENSIONS, we do the following:
4" x 72 pixels per inch (ppi) = (4x72) = 288 pixels wide
6" x 72 pixels per inch (ppi) = (6x72) = 432 pixels high
Your 4"x6" @ 72ppi image has a DIMENSION of 288x432 pixels.
UNDERSTANDING CORRELATION BETWEEN OUTPUT AND IMAGE RESOLUTION.
Place that 288x432 px (pixel) image on your monitor screen, which has an OUTPUT RESOLUTION of 1280x1024. The image takes up 288 of the 1280 pixels wide and 432 of the 1024 pixels high. If you change your monitor's OUTPUT RESOLUTION to 640x480, that SAME IMAGE now takes up 288/640 pixels wide and 432 of 480 pixels high. This makes the image LOOK bigger, however it has not changed size or dimensions at all. You've merely changed the amount of information per inch that you are viewing on screen.
ENSURING PROPER VIEWING OF IMAGES
When using Photoshop, make sure your VIEW RATIO is at 1:1 (100% ZOOM FACTOR) A common misbelief is that when you zoom in or out of an image, you are changing it's size/dimension/resolution. This is not true. Understand that you are merely changing how closely you are examining the same image.
WHY DO MY PRINTS COME OUT SMALL?
It's simple math. Your 4"x6" @ 72ppi image is being printed on a printer that outputs at 300 or 600dpi (dots per inch) [side note: Dictate onscreen images as ppi when you refer to their resolution and dictate printed images as dpi when you refer to their resolution]. If we do some math, you'll see why your images come out so small.
4" x 72ppi = 288 pixels wide
6" x 72ppi = 432 pixels high
Print this in a printer that uses 300dpi and we get an image that is:
288 pixels wide / 300 dots per inch* = 0.96" wide
432 pixels wide / 300 dots per inch* = 1.44" high
*Dots/Pixels are interchangable, ie, 1 dpi = 1 ppi.
So that same image you thought would print at 4" x 6", printed at 0.96" x 1.44".
WHY DO MY PRINTS COME OUT PIXELATED/DISTORTED?
For the same reasons it comes out small. The only difference is, that the computer scaled the image to the dimension of the original. (Tried to scale your 0.96" x 1.44" image to the dimension of 4" x 6") This is like trying to get a gallon of water out of a shot glass. The end result of this scaling is a pixelated/distorted image.
SO HOW DO WE FIX IT?
Merely known what the end dimension you want the image to be, and the OUTPUT RESOLUTION of the printer you're using.
1. I know I want an image to be 8.5" x 11"
2. I know my printer prints at 600dpi.
Do the math:
I need a document that is:
8.5 x 600 = 5100 pixels
11 x 600 = 6600 pixels
5100x6600 pixels in Photoshop.
This image will print at your desired dimension on that printer without distortion/pixelation or being shrunk.

I've set up my machine months ago to connect to SDE 9.2 from Civil 3D 2009 and it's worked all along. Recently, however, it stopped working. I can connect and view all the layers the same as before, but when I select a checkbox beside a layer to query and hit either "Add to map" or "Add to map with query", the button greys out and nothing happens. This has worked on this machine for months (even with 2008), but now it stopped. As far as I can tell, nothing has changed with SDE either. Is there a log anywhere I can view for errors?

I have a county wide aerial image in jp2 format, connected through Data Connect and every time I pan or zoom it says "executing query". It is very slow getting around in the drawing (tracing over tree line, roads, etc.). I have a Windows 7 64-bit machine with 6 GB of RAM. Is there a setting I can turn off to make zooming, panning, changing layouts, etc. faster?

I have hundreds of streets shown, but i only want to show the name of a few of the streets. right now i am coping the name out of the properties and pasting it into a mtext. I know how to query the drawing and attach the name to all of the streets, but it creates way to many to delete.

Currently practicing with primitive figures, vertices and edges. After a number of steps, I see no way to reverse steps one at a time. The edit option apparently allows one to 'undo' the last step. Additionally, I would like the option of going back to an original shape e.g. cube without having to close the app without saving.

LT 2013. Under Layer Ctrl, the status tab (light blue sheet of paper icon), highlights as light blue (in use), regardless of whether or not its in use. The only way I can force a refresh is deleting / attempting to delete a layer (eg. del '0' which obviously dosen't work); but forces an update, where those in use remain light blue, and those not in use revert to white/grey.
how I can fix this quirk of not updating/refreshing when the Layer Ctrl is opened.
