Lightroom :: Writing Metadata Of JPEGs

Jun 29, 2012

I have a problem writing metadata to some of my jpegs and can't figure out why.

I "save metadata to file" with Command-S on Mac, go away and come back to find the 3 horizontal lines and Down Arrow are back. Saving individually or as a group of pictures, makes no difference, and its always the same photos that Fail.
tired of looking at this...=⬇ (except there are 3 horiz. lines)

Lightroom :: Writing Metadata To Image Files?

Jan 14, 2012

I have been wondering why my backups (differential) weregetting larger than they should, and I noticed that some of the files (.psd and .jpg, and mayde few .tiff) were modified. Interestingly, I do not see this happening to cr2-files, that I mostly use. After trying to figure out what's going on I noticed that corresponding xmp-files were modified also. This is not the issue due to their small size, but still I had not edited images that were changed for quite a while.

Change that I see in xmp-files is rather large, and presumably related to Adobe's change in xmp-data structure. Eg.

<x:xmpmeta xmlns:x="adobe:ns:meta/" x:xmptk="Adobe XMP Core 5.3-c007 1.136881, 2010/06/10-18:11:35    "><x:xmpmeta xmlns:x="adobe:ns:meta/" x:xmptk="Adobe XMP Core 4.2-c020 1.124078, Tue Sep 11 2007 23:21:40    ">

In addition to the sample above, whole xmp structure is changed. So I presume that maybe LR is writing metadata chages to xmp in the background?

What I find disturbing is that when checking changed jpg files, I saw the similar data written into the jpg files also (files were created with oldish Canon 20D, and not edited for quite a while). These are examples from changed jpg-files (not the same from which the abone xmp-data change was taken, but similar change is visible in the corresponding XMP):

Also jpg-file from offset 0x04 was changed from "50 60" to "51 18". Also offset 0x10 was changed (16 bits). I have Lightroom configuration option "Include develope settings in Metadata Inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD Files" not selected. The option "Automatically write changes to XMP" is selected. To my understanding neither of these should not have impact to the issue. Is there something else I should check?

Change is made most likely by Lightroom 3.5 version, and has not occurred with previous versions. I have not notices this happening with 3.6, but I have been using it only few weeks. Is this known issue with previous version 3.5, or am I missing something obvious? System running is Windows 7 pro 64bit. I have not have any issues with LR lately, except crashes that I white about a week ago.

Photoshop Elements :: 10 Organizer Not Writing Metadata To Files?

Aug 20, 2012

Trying to use Photoshop Elements 10 Organizer to update date taken and add tags to picture files.   Organizer is supposed to write/update the original file properties with this updated/new metadata, however, it seems to be pretty haphazard.   I've tried selecting pictures and using the menu option to "Write keyword tag and properties info to photo" (CRTL + W).   It processes and states it is updating the files, however, after it completes, you can access the source file in Windows Explorer and view properties but none of the changes (date info or tags) has been updated in the file.

Lightroom :: Drawing And Writing In LR

Nov 25, 2011

I've been exporting my images to PS to add text, arrows and circles because of the generally assumed information that LR did not have graphic or text on image capability except for watermarking and print titles that can be JPEGed. Using an old technique with the local adjustment brush I found an easy way to do all of the above that might be of use to some of you. A while ago I saw a post where someone pointed out that you could blacken or white-out parts of your image with the local adjustment brush by just moving the Exposure and Brightness controls to the extremes (left for black, right for white). Today I needed a black arrow to point to a white blob (Snowy Owl) about a mile and a half from my 600mm lens and realized if I set my local area adjustment brust as follows it would do what I wanted. I increased my flow to 100%, my feathering to 0, adjusted the size to small, set my Exposure to -4.00 and Brightness to -200 and started writing a nice black line. With a little practice it came out ok. If I moved the Exposure and Brightness all the way to the right, I got a nice white line. If I reduced exposure and brightness by half and chose a color, I could write or draw in color. After using LR for 6 years or so, it's nice to find this capability.

Lightroom :: How To Convert JPEGs To RAW

May 23, 2012

I've done a lot of field work with a Canon G9, and it would be extremely useful to have a lens profile, but I operate the camera remotely, and in this mode, it only shoots jpegs. I have 3 questions:

1) Is there a G9 lens profile for jpeg?
2) Is it possible to convert my jpegs to RAW?
3) Would it be possible to use an existing G9 lens profile (RAW) on images converted from jpeg, or would that be futile?

Lightroom :: How To Delete JPEGs In LR3

Jul 8, 2010

Somehow, in one of my first imports into LR3, I managed to get dng+jpeg instead of just dng. I can see the jpegs in Bridge, but not in LR. I would like to delete them and thought the best way to do this would be in LR. But I can't figure out how to separate them. Are they stacked? I'm rather new to LR and don't have any experience with stacking.

I read in an old post about making sure "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" is checked in preferences and I've done that now, but I expect that only applies to future imports.

Lightroom :: JPEGs With Broken ICC Profiles?

Jan 4, 2012

I have a set of precious digital images, they are actually fairly low-res scans of prints but they are irreplaceable and cannot be re-scanned.

The images exhibit the following issues and I don't know how to fix them:

1) In the LR import dialogue box they show up as "Preview unavailable for this file".

2) When I attempt to import to LR, I get the error "The following files were not imported because they could not be read".

3) If I open the file in Photoshop CS5, I get the warning "The embedded ICC profile cannot be used because the embedded ICC profile is invalid. Ignoring the profile" - if I ignore, PS can open the file but of course the colour profile is missing and the images look universally awful.

Curiously however the images DO provide a preview in Windows Explorer, and if I open them with the infinitely inferior Windows Live Photo Gallery, they open correctly and the colours are as they should be.

This all leads me to believe that there is something wrong with these files which Windows is OK with but Adobe is not. Since I do not have the paper prints, cannot rescan, and do not know the workflow process applied, I have absolutely no idea whether this happened at scanning time or subsequently.

HOWEVER surely, in this day and age, there must be a tool which allows me to package the information Windows can read and put it back into the file where it should be so that Adobe can read the same thing?

Lightroom :: How To Exclude JPEGs From Import

Jul 12, 2013

I'd like to import just the RAW-files from my sd-card (no jpegs). Unfortunately there is no simple way to exclude the jpegs from importing. I'm talking about importing some hundreds of photos so it's not possible to uncheck them manually. I think there has to be a way to filter the import by certain file extensions or at least sort by file extensions. Sorting by media type does not fix my problem.

Lightroom :: Exported JPEGs Don't Contain Any Photo (5.2 RC)

Aug 23, 2013

One of my wedding clients has just told me that *some* (about 1-2%) of the small JPEGs from her wedding don't contain any photo - they're just white - although the thumbnail displayed in exporer is fine.

To produce the small jpegs, I import the large JPEGs into a LR catalog and export them at a different size. (don't ask why - I have a good reason for doing this).

Lightroom :: How To Export Raw Photos As JPEGs

Jan 2, 2012

I am having trouble when I use Lightroom 3 and I try to export my raw photos as jpegs. I require the Jpegs so I may send them on the web to either friends, or, to a company like istock. When I view the jpegs, they are often too red in color (this is seen in landscapes but is especially noticed in peoples skin tone...which often makes them look sunburnt or unrealistic) and they do not match my raw photos (often these are processed in CS5 and I view all photos on my Hp LP2475w monitor). Note that both LR and CS5 have been updated to the most current versions. I also calibrate my monitor with a Spyder 3. Naturally, I have tried to individually correct this color shift for each photo, but it can be a most laborious chore and it never looks quite right.

Lightroom :: Created JPEGs But Now TIFFs Required?

Sep 26, 2013

I shot loads of images as jpegs as requested. Now the customers says actually I'll need them in TIFF!! As the shoot went on I exported the images to 34 folders with 56 subfolders containing 751 jpeg images. I now need to supply exactly the same but with TIFFs. Now I still have the raw files in my C: and it would be lovely to simply re-import them and export them as TIFFs but without looking at every single raw file and finding where ever the corrosponing jpeg is I have no way of exporting the new TIFFs to sit alongside their jpeg counterparts, if you see what I mean? Is there anyway I can utilise/batch process the raw files and export them to right folders as TIFFs?

Editing a video in LR4 you can capture a frame, adjust the color, and save a preset to apply to other videos. BUT the frame capture is a jpg so you can't specify a color temperature; you hve to use the slider(s) and cross your fingers. I have two consecutive videos, one shot with AWB and the other set to Shade. I need to adjust the AWB shot (very cool) to match the Shade shot (very warm). There are so many sliders, I can't even get close to matching them.

Lightroom :: How To Avoid Changing Original JPEGs

Feb 25, 2014

I'm using Lightroom 4.1.

There an option in Catalog settings called "Automatically write changes into XMP". I like it. Very much. But not for JPEG.

The reason is rewriting the original datetime of JPEG file by Lightroom. It rewrites it even if I don't make any changes in the Develop module. For example, if I simply change item's Caption in Library or item's Copyright field then Lightroom instantly changes my JPEG. I don't want such behavior. I'll try to explain why.

Sometimes datetime of the file can contain important information about when this photo or video was made. For example, some phones don't write EXIF information into the video files (e.g. 3gp). Therefore, the only place where we can see when this video was shot is the datetime of the file. If Lightroom rewrites original datetime, we will lost this info.
