View 4 RepliesWhen I import images into Lightroom 3 on my iMac I do so as DNG. Do I need to make a Virtual Copy of an image before I begin editing it? Is the imported DNG the Master and it will not be touched by editing, and is it safe or do I have to back it up on my hard drive---or is that done automatically?
View 4 Replies View RelatedA small set of 36 images in a catalog of 12500 are behaving strangely and virtual copies do not appear to be linking to masters correctly.
Difficult to remember exactly the steps taken but including
- adding initial selection of 100+ masters to Quick Collection
- adjusting selection using colour flagging, star rating, and rejected photo marking
- creating virtual copies of 35 images 4 star picks
- adding virtuals to other manual collection
- apparent duplicate virtuals appearing when I don't THINK I asked for new virtuals in collection but must have done
- flagging duplicate virtual copies as rejected
- editing 1 image in photoshop twice
- various other editing post process
Anyway I now see in the Library panel that 35 master photos, the 2 photoshop files, and 1 of the vitrual copies are indicated as being 1 of 38, 2 of 38, etc. The virtual copies of all but 1, which was added at a later stage, do not indicate being 1 of 2 although the file name is _MG_9999/Copy 1 or Copy 2 varying from image to image. The images are sequencing the 38 "linked" photos first, then the virtuals and that 1 late master when the sort sequence is Capture Time or File Name.
Every thing is there but the reported linkage is obviously wrong and this worries me and I'd like to correct it if I can. The catalog is backed up every time Lightroom closes but as I have been opening and closing several times a day and did not recognise when this corruption happened I don't really want to be loading up a succession of backups and losing post process changes or causing other damage. I have just realised that I do NOT have Automatically write to XMP checked in catalog settings although I was meant to have.
I did export the folder of 1413 that the masters were selected from to another catalog and resynched. Didn't expect much and didn't get anything.
I have created virtual copies of an image in Lightroom 4 and I am wondering what will happen to these if I delete the folder containing the master image and its virual copies from the LR4 catalog? Will the virtual copies be automatically deleted? If so, is this reversible in any way? Will i recover these virual copies if I add the folder back into LR's catalog later on?
Also will Adobe Bridge be able to read these virtual copies in both before and even after the folder has been removed from LR4? Or is the 'virtual copy' functionality specific to LR and that the only way to preserve it is to keep the original image within LR and never delete it?
LR 4.3, 59th reinstall (i lost count), standard HP pc setup, triple-core.
workflow: i develop the master to the point where i want to diverge, then create a virtual copy, finish developing and publish to hard drive. Have done this a million times, but since most recent reinstall (for a plethora of reasons, but mostly difficulties with performance and performance - and oh! performance... ;-), it publishes only the undeveloped original. I've tried publishing the master, just to see what happens, and ditto: only the unedited raw file is displaying in my published folder on the hard-drive.
i am careful to select 'Show PUBLISHED folder on hard-drive' from the right-click drop-down on the published image in the hard-drive publishing module, which in lightroom DOES reflect all changes, but the image on the hard-drive is the original raw file, renamed to the publish-service's specs.
Having to do an extra export into ps6 (which does reflect changes), and re-save for no other reason than to preserve development is time-consuming and destructive to my workflow, which is darned complicated enough as it is!
I have an image from a 7D to which I have only applied Enable Lens Profile, Remove CA, Constrain to warp, Manual Vert Perspective and Crop with Constrain Aspect Ratio Switched off.
The cropped dimensions of this image is now 2763 x 4472.
If I copy all settings and paste to a fresh untouched virtual copy of this image the resulting size is 2752 x 4453. The shot is part of a bracketed tripod shoot in AV mode, if I copy and paste to the other two untouched images the resulting size is also 2752 x 4453.
I need to make a series of subtle corrections to match an output. I want to use Virtual copies. But I can't see how I can for instance label copy 1 "Reduced Saturation" or "-10 Clarity"
With several VCs of the same original image, If I try to change something in meta data it copies over to its siblings as well.
Is it possible to make a VC where the copy hase the detail of the changes made to the original.
Currently, all the changes are in the copy, but the detailed history of changes is not there. This precludes making the same backward steps that one could do with the original.
In Windows Lightroom (3.5 at the moment), if I select one or more images and then, on the left, right click and create a new collection, I'm given the option of creating new virtual copies of the selected images for inclusion in the new collection. I use this all the time.
However, once the collection is created, I've not found a simple, one-step method to add virtual copies of additional images to that collection. Best I've come up with is the three step process: create a virtual copy, drag the virtual copy to the collection, and then remove the virtual copy from the folder/collection where I created it. It would be far cooler if there was, say, a keyboard shortcut, e.g. alt-click-drag or something, that would do this all in one step. Is there such a method?
I've completed a book and want to make sure that when I return to it, the pictures which will appear only if the edits I made at the time I published the book. I find a "create virtual copy" option when first saving a book, but am a bit befuddled as to how to ensure the book is associated with the correct copy of the photo upon subsequent saves.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI sometimes use a trick of creating a virtual copy to get a text element of a NxN image. For example, I might use 8 images for a 3x3 and need a fourth "image" (i.e., column 1, row 2) for text. I like to take image 3 and make a virtual copy, then get that looking the way I want as my text box. When I print, I don't have to create a collection to order my images as long as the sequence-taken, along with the text box in position 4, is okay. I guess in LR 3, the virtual copy sorted after the original.
Well, I just tried the trick and the virtual copy comes before the original. I still wanted to shy away from creating a collection, so played another trick - I used the option to change the capture time under the Library module's Metadata menu, and bumped the text box up 1 second later. But the sort hasn't changed! I even forced a reconsideration of the sort by changing from capture time sort to added time sort, then back again.
Though I'm being "devious" here, it does seem to not be working correctly. Maybe sorting ignores metadata of virtual copy images?
In LR 4, I have created a virtual copy for the purpose of cropping, but when I crop it in Develop, the original image is getting cropped as well. Have I misunderstood something?

Only one folder is being effected. I remove the Read only and it is reset back again.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am currently making virtual copies of all my photographs converting them to black & white I am then choosing which one to keep. If I keep the original no problem, I can remove the virtual copy however if I choose the virtual copy I have to keep the original copy or export the virtual one. Is there a way I can make the original the virtual copy and the virtual the original. As things stand I have loads of photos showing in lightroom that I do not want.

On the v.c.'s I've already made (in Develope) I get no "Delete Virtual Copy" option, only get "Create Virtual Copy" with a right click or "Delete Photos" (which then deletes all copies and the original!).
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I create virtual copies, the total number of instances of the image goes up but I don't see any of the virtual images. I unstack and it shows they're unstacked and "1 of 2" but I still can't see the other. I've turned off all filters and still nothing. It was happening in 4.3rc and is still happening in 4.3. It is only present in certain catalogs.
View 6 Replies View Related1. Made virtual copies, count goes up, can't see them in grid in library, develop, or in loupe. Thought they were stacked, but when I went to Photo>stacking> the rest is all grayed out...can't do anything. "set as master copy" also grayed out,. Read somewhere "preferences for lightroom might be corrupt"???? I tried to do the thing in the library to correct the preferences,:(on moubntain lion 10.8.3), but in the user file there is no library...so I then looked up how to find the hidden library, but I can't find the stuff to do THAT!!! And, there IS a library on my hard drive, but when I open THAT up, there isn't anything about preferences.
I JUST bought this 2 mos ago--how can it have corrupt preferences when I only just started using it???--used it once, then discovered diddn't have right processor in old computer...bought a new computer...took several weeks to get (bought increased ram)...now I am just using for first time today. Started importing, but they are all coming up missing photoi (when I had lightroomn installed on old computer, I deleted uit and pics), then reinstalled and it was migrated over to this new computer. I looked up how to massive transfer missing photos and there is NO folder with a question mark, so I have to do hundreds and hundreds manually--can I tell you I am really hating LR4.4?
When I created a virtual copy of an image in LR3, and then I renamed the images, the virtual copies would have the new name with a hyphen.i.e if there were two virtual copies associate with the file, the renamed sequence would be as follows jcp0001, jcp0001-1(vc), jcp0001-2(vc), jcp0004
This had the advantage of keeping my file numbers in sync when I uploaded them to my online lab (Pictage) and the client gave me a file name. In LR4 renaming sequencing doesn't take into account the virtual copies in terms of the chronological # and compensating for the vcs. So the same sequence would be jcp0001, jcp0001-copy(vc), jcp0001-copy2(vc), jcp0002..This has the affect of misalignment my files with those of the online host.
I can't determine if I've encountered a bug or operator oversight. From within LR 5.2 I opened an adjusted [NEF] file in PSCC (not as a smart object) and added adjustment layers, etc. With file still open in PS, I returned to LR, made a virtual copy, changed LR adjustments, and attempted to "Edit in..." I simply get referred back to the existing canvas. I'd like to work with both, side by side, and save when I'm ready.

I recently upgraded to LR 5 and discovered that many of my virtual copies were missing.I've found them in a previous library backup and was wondering what the best way to import them was considering that the images are dispersed over dozens of different folders.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIf you export a group of photos as a Catalog, does this export all virtual copies including their own repsective xmp data? I need to send a batch of RAW files to someone but need them to be able to see all the virtual copies as well.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to find virtual copies in smart collections without using "copy name is not empty" ? Basically I am trying to use copy name as a version number for all images, include the base image which is the original. But this then makes it difficult to find the actual copies themselves.
View 7 Replies View RelatedBW Virtual Copies revert to Color when exported and then the BW adjustment disappears when i reopen LR.Has not happened before and i am doing a lot of BW Virtual Copies using the V shortcut, so its incredibly tedious to can back and redo each one.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI can not remember to have encountered this before, so here I go: I just created a virtual copy of some photos from my summer holiday, and all works well. But when I needed to access these photos going the Windows' way (Windows/My Pictures that is), the virtual copies do not appear in my YYYYMM folder. Going back to LR though, they will appear there with a /Copy 1 extension. RIghtclicking the VC, then "Show in Explorer" will highlight the original in the folder, the VC still not being there. Part of the frustration is that I can not remember this happening before (or maybe it has), so I'm wondering if I by accident have changed any settings.
Running LR 4.1 on Windows 7 64-bit.
I imported a large group of images from last October and 14 of them had virtual copies created from them, mainly the final copies of images I was using. When imported into a new catalog I created in Lightroom 4 beta, only the raw files came over, not the virtual copies. I do notice that they have all been updated to the 2012 process and I did not tell it to do that. I need to remove and reimport them? This could be a big problem for me as I really like to use Virtual Copies.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'd like to give various virtual copies different filename (or add an appendage to the name) to describe their use. But changing one virtual copy changes all from the same original image. Is there any way to rename them individually?
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy cameras have, over the years, misidentified a few lenses in EXIF. Most notably Sigma lenses, but naturally also older optics without built-in electronics.
I use Exiftool to rectify this, and then re-import metadata from file within LR. It works like a breeze both DNG, TIFF and JPG, but for the life of me I can't get those changes effected in existing Virtual Copies.

I'm new to Lightroom 4.1 and have been setting everything up... I'm having trouble with figuring out an efficient, clear naming system to distnguish Virtual Copies and Copies Edited in Photoshop. I tried using the "File Template Editor in the external Editing window... system and the way to enter it as a Preset in the File Template Editor.
My Image File Naming is as follows: KOBRIEN_YY_00001.dng
