Lightroom :: Sizing Of Catalog Using External 7 Terabyte RAID?
Jul 13, 2013
I have just purchased LR in order to see if it can efficiently catalog my 100k of raw photographs (19 meg each). These reside on a 7tb network drive. Since LR does not allow me to place the catalog on a large external network drive. I want to know how large it will get.
I would also like to to process 100k+ of photos....I want to know if this is a good digital photo asset management system for collections of this size...or not.

Using an external Raid0 drive for the working files directory with LR3+ and Windows 7 64? The raw files are mainly from a Canon 5D2 making them in excess of 20Meg after conversion to dng.
My workflow means files are moved over to other drives within a week or so and will be backed up from the external RAID daily as well but this isn't about backup but rather a fast and flexible system that allows me to work on the files on several different PCs easily.

Recently my 9TB Raid 5 server catalogue was corrupted and the drive were put through an extensive RAID recovery. I will b recieving 4TB of the 9 back with CR2, TIFF, .mov and JPEG files. We are not sure if all the data is in these files. What is the most efficient way to create a new catalogue with all the complete files? Is there another program to analyze the files before beginning in LIghtroom?

I will be managing a small portion of a client's overall image workflow by updating their web prescence on a regular basis with new work and retagging/uploading old work. I believe this requires the catalog and the image library to be housed on an external hard drive that can travel between the two of us. We are both working on PC's with LR 5.3.
The workflow would look something like this:
Client downloads new images onto external hard drive and imports into LR "ClientCatalog" is created Flags Picks and Creates a Collection from those Picks.Hard drive is handed off to me where I open "ClientCatalog".Make suggested edits to images add detailed tags and metadata upload to various social media sites and websites return hard drive to client
Is there potential problem with this workflow? My assumption is that if everything is housed on the external hard drive then there are no worries about the catalog containing all the latest updates. Are there any "safety protocols" you would add in to this workflow (besides mirroring everythign on another hard drive)?

I am using Lightroom 5 now. In the earlier version, I was able to create catalog & save them in external HDD. Similarly I could open any catalog from external HDD with the lrcat file extension.
However, in the current version, it does not allow me to create catalog nor retrieve catalog from external HDD. This means that I have to either transfer all the raw files to the HDD from the external HDD and then create the catalog in the laptop. After finishing all the editing, then copy and transfer everything back to the external HDD. I cannot imagine if whenever I have to edit something, I have to keep doing transfer between the laptop HDD & external HDD.

I'm struggling to recover status quo after an external hard drive failure. My setup is an iMac and two external drives. I keep LR on the iMac harddrive but all photos on the external drive with the second external drive for copies of the photos. My primary external drive died. I have copied the photos from the second external drive over to a new primary external drive, but I can't figure out how to restore the catalog and use this new drive in my regular workflow. When I go to the catalog file and open up the catalog, it first tries to get me to import all the photos from the new primary drive. Is that what I want to do? If my secondary drive had failed I could have figured this out easier but the primary external failure has really thrown me for a loop.

I am trying to restore my lightroom catalog on an external hard drive to my new computer that has lightroom 4 installed and all my original photos loaded. Whenever I click on the lrcat file I get a message that reads"Lightroom cannot use the catalog named "Lightroom 3 Catalog" because it is not writable and cannot be opened." Below that it says "This could be caused by incorrect permissions or because another Lightroom application is using the catalog. You may try to correct the problem or you may select a different catalog". I don't know what to do.

A friend just had major problems moving his v3 files. He had one top folder for all Lightroom. He keeps his catalog and photos on an external and now needs to increase the capacity of the external. So he copied them over in Windows with the entire Lightroom folder remaining intact, and reassigned the old drive letter to the new external hard drive, so the path to all photos is preserved.
However, everyhting shows up Missing. "Find this folder" doesn't work. You navigate to the new location but it's not clear what exactly you "do" to relink. Clicking the name of the lost folder in the resulting dialog box (new-but-named-the-same-as-old-drive) didn't cange anthong back at the Library display of that folder. I know I -- myself -- will be moving to a new internal drive from the one currently storing my photos in the near future. So his problem is relavant to the hassle i can expect.

I have been storing my LR catalog and all photos on an external drive, which is now full. I got a new external hard drive and would like to move everything over. I started to copy and paste the root folder - which has all the photo folders and the LR catalog folder. If I copy and paste everything outside of LR and open the catalog in the new location, will LR recognize the photos in the new location?
I also read that the catalog could be moved to the new external hard drive (with LR closed) and the photos moved within LR by creating the root folder on the new and dragging and dropping each folder in Library mode.

So I just tried to do a backup on my new external hard drive and it said it was unable to backup the catalog. Specifically, "Please check your folder permissions, and make sure you have available space on your backup drive and main catalog's drive." I'm not sure what's going on because as far as I know permissions should be fine and there is certainly enough space on the external hard drive. Idk if this makes a differnence but I currently have my catalog backed up on the same internal hard drive that lightroom is used on, I'm just now wanting to back it up on the external. Lighroom 4, Mac computer.

I am running LR v3.4.1. I have had a single catalog for a long time and it has really effected performance, so I am wanting to move some files out into a separate catalog. Currently, my catalog is on my C: drive, but all of my pictures are on my K: drive, which is external. When I do the export as catalog, it creates the new catalog on my C: drive, but also creates a copy of all of the photos there as well. I want to point the catalog back to the original files on my K: drive so I can remove the ones created during the export process on my C: drive.

I have LR3 on a Mac running OS 10.6.8. My catalog, cache and images were stored on an external Lacie 1TB drive (partitioned so it can be used by a pc and mac). My catalog backup files were saved on another external drive MXTR as well as copies of all my images. The Lacie had started self ejecting while running LR3 and I thought it was maybe a problem with the cable, as it would work fine after rebooting. Yesterday it crashed LR3 and never remounted. I used Disk Utility to try and repair the disk and it instructed me to erase the disk and start over. I was not worried, since my catalog was backed up to another drive. . Another 2 hours to copy my images from the MXTR to the Lacie (again the drive never self ejected during this time either). So now I go to find my most recent backup catalog. The most recent one I could find was dated 2/09/2012. I am baffled. What happened all those times I was backing up? I upgraded to LR3 in 2011, and I don't remember ever telling it to backup to another folder or drive.

I want to eject my external hard drive from my laptop. I have my "master catalog" stored on their due to small internal hard drive. When I close all programs and I try to eject drive it says that a program is still using it. I am assuming that this is lightroom because the problem did not previously exist before I installed lightroom. (running windows 8, lightroom 5)

I currently have my LR 4 libriaries and catalogs on a external drive that i can transport between my laptop and office mac. The only issue I am having is when I color label photos on one computer it does not show up on the other computer. Is there a preference for this? It is the only thing I can't figure out and is frustrating after rating them on one computer and then not having them later on the other.

It seems that a powerful tool like Lightroom (on top of a powerful Adobe suite) should allow a developer to import a client's catalog from Photoshop Elements on an external hard drive. Everything I've read in the support and forums indicate I need to have Photoshop Elements installed on my own machine, and that reading off a network drive is not possible.

I have about 900 raw files on an external drive. I edited those files using my master catalog using a laptop while still travelling. When I got home, I copied the master catalog from the external drive to the desk top, then opened the master catalog on my desktop. I can see the edited images on the external drive. So far so good.
I want to copy (add) the edited images to my desk top. I tried to export the images as a new catalog and then import it into the desire location on my desktop drive. However, LR5 does not allow that. I get this message: "There is nothing new in the catalog you have selected. All of the catalog's photos are up to date in this catalog." Yes, but the edited images are not on my desktop.....
I also tried to Import from the external drive and then Copy the files to the desktop, but then I lose all of the work done in the develop module and the keywords.
I watched Kost's LR 3 video on merging catalogs, but she dodges the question of how to deal with this issue since the "merge" is within the same catalog.I'm using LR5 with Windows 7.

Since the installation of our new server with 8 terabytes, I've noticed that Photoshop 7.0 cannot save images to the server. It doesn't recognize TB and says it cannot save because the disk is full.
Does anyone know a work around other then saving the image to a local drive and then copying it back to the server?

I don't want to have the original files on both laptop and desktop.
I want to make a copy of a Lightroom 3 catalog to put on my laptop so while on the move I can be geo-tagging and keywording to 8000 photographs. I don't want to drag an external drive with me. I just want to be able to work on the catalog metadata and have all the updates/changes stored there (on the laptop)(in the catalog) and then transfer the catalog back to the desktop (to the primary archive) and have all the updates/changes pushed back into the DNG's or the XMP sidecar files alongside the CR2's. These changes would be only keywording and possibly writing GPS data into them….NOT image edits (that would probally require access to the original image files)
As a test, I tried "exporting as catalog", TWO images (with the source images "unavailable"). I flash-drived the resulting catalog to my laptop. I opened the catalog in LR3 and made changes to the metadata. I tried both "saving metadata to file" and "updating DNG previews" (which would be useless anyway since I could not write data back to the missing originals) and also tried doing nothing and just closing LR, then pulling the flashdrive and plugging it into the DESKTOP.(knowing the changes are stored within the catalog itself only) I open the 2 picture catalog in LR and see the keyword updates. Hurrah!
I switch over to the master catalog. All I want to do is import the updated metadata (keywording, contrast, etc…) back into the master catalog and push the data into the original DNG or XMP. On import I select "replace: Metadata and develop settings only" (with or without "preserve old settings" checked) and click import. Voila! NOTHING HAPPENS and the updated keywords are NOT picked up.
I know that the metadata updates were carried out because they showed up when I opened it separately in LR! For some reason they don't seem to making through the import process to the master catalog…

I'm using Lightroom 1. I tried to merge catalogs by importing a catalog into a master catalog, but there were some problems. The one I noticed immediately was that the collections are not correct. It imported the collections, but for example one collection now has only 4 photos when the originbal had 140? How can I fix that? (Although not necessariy a problem, it seems to have the wrong number of photos imported too. It says the previous import was 3175 photos when it was more like 10,000.)
