Lightroom :: Selection Of Multiple Folders And Collections In 4?

Why is using Collections better than using Folders?
View 1 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded to Lightroom4. Previously, if I selected a collection and a folder in a catalog, only the images found in both the collection and the folder would appear on screen. Now all the images from either the collection or the folder are shown. Is there a way to get the old way back?

I have a set of collections that I had thought were missing, but I now see them under Smart Collections. How do I move that set up to the top level and out from under 'Smart Collections'. They are not smart collections - I created them by creating a set of nested folders and then setting a target collection and working through the thumbnails clicking 'Add to target collection'.
All works well but the folders are not at the top level of the Collections list.
I just purcgased an iMac (and installed LR3) after running LR3 on a MacBook for several months. Is there a straightforward way to copy all of my content (folders, collections and catalog) from the laptop to the desktop? I'm essentially trying to duplicate what's in my laptop LR3 on my desktop LR3.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am wondering if there is a simple way to export photos from lightroom into seperate folders based on collections.
For example, in LR5, I have collection set "2014". Within "2014", there are sub-collections Jan, Feb, March... and so on. How can I export all the photos, at once, from the "2014" collection set so they end up in a folder structure that mirrors the collection set and sub-collections. My collection is more complex and contains many more sub-collections than the example provided, so I would really like to avoid having to export each sub-collection separately.
In searching for this, I found mention of some sort of plug-in that apparently was capable of this, but I could not get it to work. The GUI was not intuitive and I didn't have time to learn it. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the plug-in since I deleted it. But is there any way to do this without having to learn code or install plug-ins?
I have set up smart collections to automatically receive images with certain keywords, eg. nature, architecture, creative...
So, any image with the keyword nature automatically gets inclued in the smart collection NATURE, and so on.
The problem occurs when the image has more than one of those specific keywords. For eg, nautre and architecture.
In this case, I would like the image to be included in BOTH the NATURE and ARCHITECTURE smart collections, but only one of the smart collections is updated.
After creating a new catalog for photos from a collection, I'd want to remove the photos from Lightroom and keep on disk. In the collection, there are some photos that are in multiple other collections and I'd want to keep those images in their other collections and so not removed them from Lightroom.
how to easily identify those images that are in other collections and thus might not want to remove those images from Lightroom.
Not sure if it's a setting I'm missing, a workflow gaffe, or a feature that is simply absent. I would like new/multiple versions of a file to be persistent across multiple collections. It is not inconceivable to have an image in more than one collection; something could be in a Landscape collection, Portfolio collection, Blog Postings, and so forth. Unfortunately, it seems that if I export a file to edit in Photoshop (or any external application) it will only stack with the image in the collection from which it was sent. It will not show in any other collections so they would not include the current version of a file unless manually added.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have seen similar questions here on the forum but either they are not what I'm looking for, or older versions of LR.What I need is to import from one folder / memory card and mark some of the photos with different shoot names or headline. This name should then be used as a final folder name.
My current structure:
2012
- 06_Cyprus
- 07_Vacation in Denmark
- 07_Trip to Oslo
I have 20.000 photos in this structure already imported by Bibble and before that Downloader Pro. I would like to do everything in one program, not have to use Downloader Pro every time I need to structure my photos.
The only way I have seen to do this in Lightroom 4 is to do multiple imports and that gets annoying! This is the biggest factor for me if I will continue with Bibble / Corel Aftershot or go for Lightroom.
I've created a publish service (jf zenfolio) under which using the the jf plugin publish I created varios folders, under which I've dropped different photos to publish.
Now... is there anyway I can tell the publish service to publish / republish everything in one click (instead of having to click on each folder to see if there's anything outstanding?
Is it possible to search meta data in multiple folders at once versus one folder at a time?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought a ReadyNAS and a few harddrives to go with it, and decided to move all my 35594 pictures to it.As Lightroom has some silly features like not being able to move multiple folders unless they have a root folder, I moved most of these files via Explorer and then had to sync them one by one for hand (which is annoying, as there's one folder for every day – however, that's another question). For the rest of the 20 000 photos, I decided to move them with Lightroom.
Results:
0 missing files from the files I moved with Explorer and resynced.
3049 missing files from the files I moved with Lightroom.
The files simply don't exist anymore, on neither of the disks. I've searched every single drive for them completely by file name, date, everything. They're gone. This has nothing to do with disk failure, or user error. Only the files I moved with Lightroom are affected.
Considering there's both client work and personal pictures among these, it's crucial that I get them back.
There's another thread about this problem here, except that I didn't have the luck of just 80 files.
For example, let's say I have a file on a hard drive labeled 2012. Inside that file there are three folders with photos and they are labeled Phoenix, Seattle, Portland. Is there a way to Import these folders at one time and keep the names, or will they all come into Lightroom only as 2012?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been forced to check under the hood in LR due to the fact that I have lost a big chuck of my keywords, and I'm contemplanting if its worth importing a copy of my backup copy. I am debating if I should just go back and re-enter all the missing keywords, or retrieving a backup copy. However, I read somewhere that its wise to change the name of the master catalog before retrieving a backup copy.
However, I found multiple folders of my catalog in my master folder. I'd like to know which one should I delete without causing any major collateral damage.

4- folder 176-2 copy.lrca created 3-26-11 2:31 PM 179 MB
In addition, there are corresponding Previews.lrdata for each folder.
Imported a parent folder with multiple children (20-40) folders. I've adjusted the photos and now want to publish easily to smugmug.
View 1 Replies View RelatedA couple of things that seem to be missing in LR4. In all previous versions of LR, I could select non contiguous folders (or collections or a mix of the two) by holding down the Command key (using a Mac). That doesn't work in LR4. Also, when I create virtual copies (which I also do all the time), the copies lose the name of the original. They are simply name "copy 1."

All the photos are still in the catalog, but do not show in the folders (left side panel).
View 3 Replies View RelatedI renamed a lot of my photo folders in Explore. Now in LR4, all these folders appears with an ?. I can't work on pictures from these folders - I get the message: File named xxx is offline or missing. It does not sync the parent folder. Nor does it sync the folder it self. If I right clik on a LR4 folder with a ?, and try to locate the folder, I only get the option to merge the identical folders. Is there any way to sort this. I can't restore the old folder names.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using LR3. I appear to be digging a massive hole for myself trying to sort out the catalog. When I first got LR, I had initially added just a small number of files just to see how LR worked. At this time I was still completing sorting out my full photo collection in 'my pictures' which were also copied to two external hard drives. Once that work was completed, I imported a complete folder (some 4000 images) into LR. The folder/subfolders appeared in the folders panel but the sub folders I had initially imported were displayed with a ? and a message 'file is missing or offline' Going down the road of 'find missing folder' eventually led to my problems.
About 6 sub folders are involved so I eventually took the decision that it could be easier just to remove them so I could then re-import them from 'my pictures'. That hasn't worked out as planned. When I go into 'file' to import photos from 'my pictures' the missing sub folders are there but the images are 'greyed' as well as the import button. When I put the cursor onto one of the greyed-out images the message 'appears to be a duplicate of another photo already in catalog' appears.
how I can restore the 'missing' sub folders into the folders panel.
How do I delete sub-folders in Lightroom without deleting the photos in those sub-folders?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI used to be able to select a folder (say, all images in 2013) and then control click a smart collection I had created (rated > 1 star) and that would filter my images from 2013 and only display the ones that were rated higher then one star.
I cannot seem to get this to work in 5.3 (win7 pc fwiw). When I do this, it shows images that aren't from 2013 (the folder I selected).
To be clear, I expect to see images from 2013 that are rated > 1 star. If I select a folder with a single unrated image and then control click a "> 1 star" smart collection, it shows the image still. It doesn't seem to filter, it's showing both the contents of the smart collection and my one image.
After deleting a Smart Collection in Lightroom 3.6, the option to Edit Collection that was previously in the context menu is gone. Double-clicking the Collection Name will not bring up the Edit Dialog either. I tried removing the preferences and letting Lightroom create a new one but that didn't fix it either. Not sure what else to try.
