Lightroom :: Crop Doesn't Stick To Its Ratio

Apr 22, 2013

I normally crop to ratio 4:3 (8x6) for printing, but just very recently the crop does not stick to it's ratio when reaching the outer borders.(especially if changing orientation from Landscape to portrait). If pulled It just keeps expanding to almost a square ratio before it stops.Obviously the padlock is locked and it is something that never used to happen.

Photoshop :: Doesn't Crop As Size Indicated / Crops As Larger Ratio

May 30, 2012

I just went through and cropped a bunch of images as a 5x7. When I re-opened the images to put our studio logo on them (using an action) the images are a similiar ratio to the 5x7 size that I cropped the image, but they are not actually a 5x7 so my action no longer puts the logo in the correct place on the image. Is there a way to get the crop tool to not give me a ratio but actually size the image to the size that I input into the boxes? I don't want to have to re-do all of my logo actions to fit the ratios.

Lightroom :: Retaining Crop Ratio In Editing?

Nov 22, 2011

Using LR2, and processing a large number of images, I always crop to a 6x4 ratio.  However, this seems to need to be manually set on each image.  I can set up other processing settings as a pre-set, but not the crop.  It wants to go to Original for each image.

Is there a way to skip this manual step and always crop to the 6x4 ratio?

Lightroom :: Crop Tool Won't Constrain Aspect Ratio In 4.4

Aug 13, 2013

This is a sudden change of behavior in Lightroom 4.4, Mac OS 10.7.5.

In the past, when I chose the crop tool, with the locked icon in the locked position, when I adjusted the crop, the crop was constrained to the original aspect ratio of the photo. Now, no matter what I do, the crop is kind of "partly" constrained.  That is, I start with a vertical image, then drag the crop down so that the crop rectangle has a horizontal aspect ratio, I can drag up on the horizontal crop rectangle so that the original aspect ratio is no longer preserved.  Until the aspect ratio has gone horizontal, the original aspect ratio is preserved.  It doesn't matter if the lock is locked or unlocked, or whether I hold the shift key or not.

Here's an example:

at this point, the crop is still vertical, with aspect ratio constrained. It's still "as shot" and the padlock icon is locked

Here, the crop is now horizontal, but the aspect ratio is still constrained, "as shot" and still the icon is locked.

Now, things have gotten wonky.  When the right edge of the crop hits the edge of the photo, it's possible to drag it upwards.  The aspect ration is no longer constrained, and even though the padlock icon is locked the aspect is now "Custom"

As I said, this is new behavior which I have never seen since the version of Lightroom included the crop tool (I started at Lightroom 1.0).  Like they all say "I haven't changed anything", but something  obviously has changed.  I don't believe this is correct behavior, or the behavior I've been used to for years.  Is there any way to think this is the correct behavior?

I noticed it sometimes happens on some (most) photos, but not all, and will seemingly randomly start/stop working properly on photos that weren't/were working just minutes before.

Lightroom :: Crop Aspect Ratio Not Staying Locked When Cropping

Apr 29, 2013

It seems that with the 4.4 update a bug was introduced with the crop aspect ratio not staying locked when cropping.   It changes to "custom" even though the lock remains. What do I do to maintain a standard photo size and not switch to custom?  For printing purposes, I need the ratio to stay locked and dimensions standard.

Photoshop :: Why Doesn't Rotation Stick In CS6

Feb 1, 2013

I just tried to rotate an image, pressing "R" for the rotate tool, getting the compass rose over the image, and then rotated the image by dragging 90 degrees. So far so good. Then, I wanted to crop the image into a panorama proportion, by pressing "C" for crop tool - and voilá, the image jumps back into the original rotation, just like that. I have tried to press the Enter key after rotating, I have tried to save, I have tried to change to other tools in between, I have looked into the toolbar for clues but found none - I just can't understand what it is that I'm supposed to do to make the rotation stick.

I'll just add that I managed to solve this temporarily by selecting rotate 90 degrees from the menu and then cropping - why I can't do this visually by using the "R" command and dragging visually, then changing to the crop tool. It's just fortunate that there's often several ways to accomplish the same things in PS. So, I managed to work around it - but I'm still wondering why I couldn't make the rotation stick by using the method above. If I'd like to make a more arbitrary rotation then that seems like the way to do it - if it would stick.

Photoshop :: Crop Tool Re-crop By "ratio"

Jan 22, 2008

I've been using the crop tool without any knowledge of the little boxes you can fill in to restrict its WxH dimensions. I always wanted my crops to come out at a 2:3 ratio and could never get them perfect since I was just eyeballing it.

So then I found the WxH controls and if I put "2 in" for width and "3 in" for height, my image will come out as desired, no scaling of the image, but with the unfortunate side effect that my DPI has been changed, which causes problems for me later on. Now if I put "2 in" x "3 in" and then specify 72dpi in the "resolution" field, it will actually scale my image which is not what I want either. Now if I put "2 px" by "3 px" of course it will massively scale my image, which again is not what I want.

What I want is to re-crop my image to a 2:3 ratio, WITHOUT scaling, AND without modifying DPI. Is this possible with the crop tool? It seems that my WxH numbers are required to have units after them and I don't want any of those units (inches, px, mm, etc). I want unitless cropping, basically cropping by ratio. Does this make any sense?

I have a work-around which involves batch resetting all my DPI's at the end of the session. But that adds another step to my workflow which is not a very elegant solution.

Illustrator :: Changing Size Of Object Doesn't Stick?

Aug 23, 2013

Tricky one to add a title for but if I am resizing an object precisely using the W Value and H Value fields, for some reason the size I enter then changes. So, for example, I have an object that is 57.15mm wide. I then change that value to 57mm but when I click return it then changes back to the 57.15mm value. This appears for all other values. So if I change it to 60mm it then changes it to 59.972 mm

Not really sure what setting I have that's making it do this. My document is set up in mm.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Default Label Style Doesn't Stick

Jan 4, 2012

Civil 3D 2011, updates installed - I have a user who is manually importing points into his drawing.  He has set the default label style in his command settings to a specific style, but no matter what he does the points come in with the previously set default style (the out-of-the-box label style).  We've tested this in a new drawing with the same results.  We've tested this on several computers with the same results.

My initial thought was that something on the network was holding this setting somehow.  We disconnected his computer from the network with the same results.

What could be causing this label style to stick?

AutoCAD 2013 :: Mouse Click Doesn't Stick After Initializing Command

Aug 27, 2012

This is happening on all my Autodesk software (AutoCAD, Map 3D, and Civil 3D)(2012 and 2013). . .

I initiate a command (say LINE), I pick my first point to draw the line and nothing happens.  I must click it again to get it ot work.  It only happens when I'm working fast.  For instance:
L (for line)right-click (for ENTER)immdediately try to click the first point of the linenothing happens and I must re-pick the firtst point again

or

E (for erase)right-click (for ENTER)immediately try to pick a corner for your boxnothing happens and I must re-create my selection box However, if I go slow it works fine.  For instance, after initating the command simply wait about 2 or 3 seconds and then try to click.  It all works fine there, but waiting becomes annoying now.

The mouse clicks work fine in all my other software (Excel, MS Word, etc.).  I am having another (maybe totally unrealated issue) with my keyboard.  While typing, my cursor will magically move somewhere else on the screen. I'm using a laptop and have made sure I'm not touching the touch pad.  This may be a completely unrelated issue to the mouse clicks, but I thought I'd inform you just in case the two go hand in had. by the way. . .dynamic mode is disabled, PICKFIRST is set correctly, and I've messed with the 3D Config options.

Is there a simple way to constrain a crop to a certain aspect ratio? I have a bunch of cropping to do and the results all need to be 5:3. It's not that difficult to use the info palette and get the aspect ratio right but it would be way quicker if I could just constrain the crop tool to those proportions.

Lightroom :: Shortcut To Advance To Next Frame Since Forward Arrow Doesn't Work In Crop Tool?

As a pro, I crop all my photos.I normally use the forward arrow to move through each image, but with the crop tool the forward arrow doesn't work for advancing to the next frame. It only adjusts the crop. This is extremely frustrating for me as it slows down my workflow.

Is there a one key shortcut, within the Crop Tool -- that permits us to move forward from frame to frame?I wish the forward key worked for this within the crop tool!

Is there an easy answer or a way to format something in Lightroom -- so I can have a one-key method to advance frames within the Crop tool?

Photoshop :: How To Create Action To Crop To Specific Aspect Ratio

Jun 7, 2012

I have images of varying sizes that I need to all be cropped to a specific aspect ratio in the center of the image and extending either to the side edges or the top and bottom depending on using the maximum portion of the image.  How do you set up an action to do this.

If I were to do this by hand, I would use the rectangle marquee, change to fixed ratio, and drag from one edge to the other.  They move the selection to the center (as best I could) .  Then do Image<Crop?

But I need to automate this process and have have it exactly positioned in the center.  Can this be automated in an action?  If so, how?

FYI, I have CS5 (and CS6).  I am comfortable using the image processor.  So as long as I have an action set up, I can process all of my images using the image processor. I also have lightroom 4 if there is some way to do it there.

Photoshop :: Pasting From Illustrator To CS5 Doesn't Maintain Aspect Ratio

Nov 15, 2013

I have vector artwork that is not aligned to a pixel grid in Illustrator. In CS5, I would be able to paste the vector object as a smart object into Photoshop file that was larger than the illustrator image and resize larger while holding shift to keep the ratio the same.

However with Creative Cloud, if I have a square in Illustrator that happens to be 17.3px by 17.3, then paste to Photoshop in a file that has a larger canvas than the paste, I get uneven horizontal and vertical ratios (width = 18; height = 17). It seems to overestimate the width and make it appear fatter horizontally (which is the wrong aspect ratio). This is very noticeable when vector objects (like perfect circles and small icons) get scaled up in Photoshop.

I have tried unchecking and checking "Snap Vector Tools and transforms to Pixel Grid" but this doesn't seem to fix it. The only way I've been able to get this ratio to be kept is to create a new document with the size automatically changed to clipboard dimensions (which are the desired 17x17). When you paste as smart object, it now uses the correct aspect ratio.
