Illustrator :: Relink UNC Path For Linked Images
Jan 31, 2013
We have thousands of files that contain linked images. These files exist in multiple locations and are kept in sync by dfs replication. Since illustrator uses unc path for links, the links that were created are slow to open for users at other locations and we would like to batch relink these files to a dfs namespace or unc path that better serves more users. I have already tested replacing the path in the files via find and replace using notepad but the link does not change when actually opened.

I manage a design department where we're constantly working with documents that have multiple placed and embedded images in each. As an example, we often have 10 instances each of 4 different images in a given document. These links are constantly changing and being updated on a per-client basis. My concern is that my designers waste a lot of time relinking these embedded graphics as the software prompts the user to relink each one individually. If the designer needs to replace 10 of the linked graphics with, say, "Royal Mahogany", they have to select all 10, select the relink option and specify the file they want to replace the graphic with by clicking on and placing the selected file for each instance of the graphic. So if they're replacing the links of 10 images, they have to select and place the desired file 10 times. Is there any way to select multiple placed images and replace them all at once? Note that the images we place into the file are stored in multiple locations on server, subdivided by material, manufacturer, color, finish etc.
My team is using CS3 mac version currently but we'll be upgrading to CS5 soon. This is a huge time-waster for my company.

My designer has created an Illustrator file on his Mac that has linked images. When he sends me the all the files and I open the ai file in Illustrator CC on my Windows PC, I need to re-link the images. One image can't be found at all.
However, if I open the file in CS4 it finds the linked files no problem.
Is this some bug in Illustrator CC for Windows?

I have been working with some illustrator files for a while and all of a sudden I cannot open them anymore. I do not even get an error message. I tried opening them on another computer. They open, but then when I order to re-link the images, the file just shuts down. The files are quite large, but even when I make them smaller (smaller then when they were before this problem started), I still cannot open them. I thought it might be related to the images, but also older files with no new images have the same problem.

I have a script using the dynamic content plugin from illustrator which takes and XML file and replaces it with a new one. All linked text/symbol/image links have their paths updated or text content updated.
The problem I have is I have background images which are not dynamic so I need to relink these based on their file path.
We have two shares, an OPI & an FPO, because of the size of backgrounf images we keep the FPO links in whilst artworking.
What I'd like to do is relink all images if they contain FPO in their file path, I'm in CS5.1. I had a look and found CS6 has a .relink method but obviosuly this is no use to me in CS5.1

I have been looking for a solution to automate a printing and ordering process. I have a design template with 2 pages both 8.5x11 in size. One page represents the front and other the back for double sided printing. I have 6 different images per sheet so in my links panel I have 12 total links, 2 of each. I was wondering if there is a script to update all the links with the same filename with other image? Currently I have to search through all the images and update each one.
I have 6 artboards dividing the 8.5x11 sheet proportionatly. Each artboard represents a different order. Is there a script to write the linked filename to the bottom corner of each artboard?

I have linked files in a realtive path /sheets/ in my adboe ai file. We are generating 10,000's of images and placing them in the /sheets/ folder. The naming scheme is the same.
However when I share this project with a friend over dropbox. ai + /sheets/ folder. When he opens it up he's getting a ton of errors about the files not being found.
Does illustrator ignore linked file locations if the path isn't ABOSULUTE? Or if the newly generated images are overwritting the previous ones?
How can I fix this because we are looking at 10,000's of large image reaplcments that will take DAYS of mannual labor?

We're running Illustrator CS4 across a suite of 12 Macs on OS X 10.6.8. Over the last couple of weeks, several accounts have been hit with the same problem, that linking an image in an Illustrator document will not show the images, but just a bounding box. The link information is correct, but I've found no way of getting the image to show, aside from embedding it. Furthermore, saving a document in this state will cause Illustrator to crash when trying to reopen the document.
We use network accounts for the Macs, so all installs are local on each machine, but users access their profile directly from our server. Therefore, all links reference a location on our network and not the local drive. However, there does not seem to be anything wrong with the installs as the issue is with accounts and not the individual client. Once the issue occurs for a user, it occurs on any Mac they log into, while unaffected users can use any Mac without issue.
Our network has run in this state for a year now and the problem has only surfaced recently. I've tried clearing user's preference files relating to Illustrator, but this has had no effect. It's also random when creating a new user on the network, as some will have the issue and others not, despite all being created with the same set of default preferences.

Is there some sort of "Auto Embed" feature that will embed your linked images?
I have a document that is embedding most of the linked images. It's not happening in all my documents, just one

I have an illustrtor documcnet which is one quater of the size it will be printed at (50 * 12.5 cm up to 2 * 0.5 m).
It is at one quater on request of the company printing the banner. It has a high res texture image (embedded) on the babk layer and the rest is all vectors.
When the image is printed (and scaled up 400% in the process) will the high res image be printed at the highest resolution available? If not is there an easy way to scale my artboard guides, all objects and effects up by 400%.

I have been tying to figure out how I could easily embed multiple linked images easily. I have some 1000 .svg images which have about 1-7 .tif images linked in to them. I now need to get those links embedded and becouse of the amount of images I'm hoping to make an action out of it. I have a script to embed single image in .svg but haven't have luck with multiple embeddings.

I create a document with multiple artboards whereby every image I place in the document is linked, however the size of the document is still enormous (around 350mb). It's a big document with a lot of clipping masks on images but surely it shouldn't be so big.

I am making a holiday greeting card. I have 16 very larged photo images "linked" (not embedded) into the card. The original images are very large (e.g. 4500 x 3000 px, 10mb) but I've placed them fairly small in the final card (only about 2" x 2" printed). Therefore, I likely don't need the full resolution of the original photos. I need to generate a final file that I can send to an online print shop, something that is ideally 10-25Mb in size, probably pdf. How to prepare the final file for export to pdf to generate as such? Right now, the final file is 275Mb because it is embedding the full size of each of the 16 images.
I'm on Illustrator CS6 on Mac.

I'm using Illustrator CS6. I have an artboard with 200 of the same placed file. I now want to use this same layout for 30 other views, they are the same size, but different images. If I relink them I have to click through each one. I tried using a script I found on here by Carlos:
#target Illustrator
// script.name = relinkAllSelected.jsx;
// script.description = relinks all selected placed images at once;
// script.required = select at least one linked image before running;
// script.parent = CarlosCanto // 7/12/11;
// script.elegant = false;
[code].....
and I get an
error 25: Expected: }.
Line:10
-> p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 12.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Times}
I'm on a mac, os x 10.6.8. and I copied the script into the script preset folder so its starting from the drop down menu. Don't think I'm leaving anything out. I'm swapping 1 placed(linked) PDF for another.

I need to prepare a linked chain araound a defined path. (Please have a look at the attached drawing) My idea is to have one element of the chain defined as a dynamic block and to manually "rotate" one side of the chain element. After that inserting the next element (previously aligning the user coordinate system) and "rotating" the right part again to the next position...
After doing the rotation, the block definition will change and the next block will be "disformed". So far no big problem, but the grip of the rotation parameter will stay there and I am not able to "rotate" the right part back into the old position (0 degree).

I'm making a booklet (in InDesign) that will have a few pages filled with collage-type visuals that I'm planning on making in PS. I'll be using a few low-res images that a photographer has given me but hasn't yet retouched, converted to high-res nor color profiled - but he will need to see my collages before being able to retouch them. I was wondering if there was a way to relink placed images in PS the way you can in Illustrator, but after rasterizing the images (since I'll be needing to lasso-cut into them to make the collage happen)?
Basically, what I'm doing right now is creating a canvas, placing two JPG images saved as TIF for testing, selecting "Edit Content" and cutting into them with the lasso, saving and switching back to my canvas. The modification is applied and correct, but when I select "Replace Content" and choose the same test file from its original source place (as I would do when the photog hands me over the retouched image), the relink removes the data I've just created and just inserts the full-sized image, thus destroying my "collage".
What am I missing here?

I use external/linked images because the file is multipaged and as I am working continuously on it every "Save" command takes less time.
Every image is there on HDD in the same folder as CDR-file. Today I opened this file and the images look very bad - one couldn't see what is pictured there. The question is how to refresh them? I don't see such an option.

Is there any way the images that we externally get permanently bound in the document. I know “collect for output”method but the asked option seems to be more compact.

The management of the importation of externally linked images still has the problem in previous versions.
1) You can't import more than one picture at a time, externally connected simultaneously in the document.
2) If you move the picture within it, in a new folder, there is the possibility of assigning the new path to more 'photos at the same time but only one at a time.
So if I have 100 photos to be updated with the new path I have to do with each photo. While it would be much more logical to assign the same path to more 'selected photos.

I have some negative space I created(black area, see first image) that I want to fill with type, not just a simple fill.
Basically I want to create the negative space from a bunch of small minus signs(-) that need to line up as they go across. If I type on each path one at a time as the text doesn't line up that way. This needs to be one continuous path. (see second image)
Unfortunately if I add them together, it creates a compound path, which you cannot type on, unless I am mistaken? So I need them to be a path, not a compound object.

I've tried every permutation of copy and paste; I renamed the path to path. It looks like a path when I add stroke, but it does not behave like one. I can't cut it or join it to any other path. It remembers it's text path status. I'm running OS X 10.7.5.

I accidentally converted a path to a text path. I searched the forum for how to convert it back to a regular path. The answer I found said to select the path and hit Command+C+F. This gives me another text path! I now have at least 6 copies of the path in my files but they are ALL text paths and none are visible with a stroke.
