Illustrator :: How To Add A Path To Mask

Jun 10, 2012

I work on a grafic. It uses text, which already is converted to paths. The counters of my caracters were kicked out of their original positions, due to a spurious action. Now I’m trying to bring them back into the already existing mask/path.

Selecting the counters’ paths is no problem here. It’s more about, how to get and merge those vectors into the mask-layer.I tried the direct-selection-tool, copy/pasting, dragging, cmd J – none of those methods brought any satisfaction.

Illustrator :: Editing Mask Path Transparency Throws One Out Of Mask Mode

Dec 30, 2012

While creating various circular masks with a radial gradient from white to black, whenever I change the blending mode of the mask path Ai will throw me out of mask mode into layer editing mode. Since this is on a large document of ~2Gb file with multiple artbords for large poster & UI refresh speed is slow, this has become quite frustrating. Is this normal Ai behaviour?

Illustrator :: Pull Copied Path Out Of Clipping Mask?

down under step #4 it says to Copy (& Paste) the circle that's inside a Clipping Mask and to the drag it out of the mask in order to duplicate it twice.

I've pulled it out of the mask or even, actually, how to go about pulling it out of the mask

thus far I've Copied and Pasted in In Front ... does copying and pasting it in front bring it outta the mask?

do i need to create a new layer after I've Copied it and then Paste it on the new layer?

Photoshop :: How To Automate Global Vector Shape / Mask And Path Transfers To Illustrator

Sep 19, 2013

Using: WIN7, Adobe CS5, PS, AI

When I need to move a project from  Photoshop to Illustrator, I need an automated way to prep shape and vector mask items for export--preferably preserving the structure and layout that already exists as layer names and order, character and paragraph settings, and of course global registration. My scripting is limited to recording actions, so I need to find an existing script or get coached on this. Any recommendations?

I have googled and waded through numerous forum posts trying to research this on my own, so I know about the ability to export my path collection, but that's usually inapplicable in reality. It only deals with vectors from the Paths palette. In Photoshop, I use the Paths pallet to store master and WIP paths, but all the working paths are either shapes or vector masks--or active type layers. Often enough that it's become an issue, I'll need to move the whole project to Illustrator. Obviously, the process has issues; I'm not expecting the rastor layers or Photoshop styles to carry over, but I see no reason why I can't capture text, shape and vector mask elements.

They all have a vector component, but simply opening a PSD in Illustrator flattens (badly) the layers. I select the "Convert Layers as Objects" but have yet to see it extract editable text. I'm not sure if it even attempts to do anything with vector shapes or masks. I've got a process for moving a project one element at a time, using registration marks--but this requires turning text into shapes most of the time, especially if I am trying to preserve kerning and leading crucial to the layout. Maybe I just have not found the right info, and there is a way to transfer editable text without losing character and paragraph settings.

For now, I'd be happy to stop wasting time doing a ton of conversions and renaming by hand, just so I can preserve the work I've already invested.

One suggestion, posted under a multiple path export question, was to use scripting... but no one explored or explained how to go about it. I'm not asking for the impossible, however. I simply working out my own solution: if there is no application method for transferring the elements, try to script a method to prep those elements for export. Before I even attempt to reinvent someone's wheel, I am putting the question out there:

I kept at it and managed to open my current project PSD in AI with text and shape/mask vectors successfully--not as cleanly as I'd hoped but the relative positioning of things was acceptable. I am still interested in hearing people's suggestions on better ways to transfer work from one tool to the other, though. I know this is going to come up for me again and again.

Illustrator :: Clipping Mask On A Layer Is The Entire Document Covered In A Mask?

Jan 27, 2013

Level: Newbie   OS: Win7 64bit   Ia: Cs6

Once I use a Clipping Mask on a layer is the entire document covered in a mask?

And/or is all the artwork from then on inside the mask?

I've read about how to add and how to remove art from a mask. I've read about how to make and release and lots of other things.

So, then I went and found a lesson that contained the use of a Clipping Mask.

I am suppose to Select the main shape and "just" copy it and move it down (doesn't say rather to Paste in front or back but I assumed in back ~ not that it has mattered thus far)

However, while making the main shape I used Gradient Mesh and used an Offset to create a "replica" and so when I go to Select the main shape the mesh is selected and so when I Paste (in back ~ seems most logical) and then move it down the details such as the colors of the Gradient and other such things are visible in front ~ ??

So, I have been trying to abate my problem in lots of different ways.

I have tried using the Pen tool to draw behind the main shape, I've tried making a New Layer and placing it above and below and inbetween the main shape layer, I've tried adding the artwork to the Mask ... I've tried everything I can think of and I've been through many an article in the manual and FAQ's to no avail.

I suppose, what I think I need to know ... is, how ... how on earth do I draw behind this main shape? Am I not able to do it because I am not getting behind the Mask?

Photoshop :: Mask To Path

Aug 1, 2008

I am soliciting input about the specific steps needed to efficiently go from an alpha channel mask to a stroked path on a new layer. That is, the selection outline(marching ants)that can be derived from the mask wants to be converted to a path and stroked and placed on a new layer. I am looking for a minimum set of steps to get there.

Running CS3 ext on a Windows platform.

After Effects :: How To Make Video Mask Adapt To A Path

Jul 3, 2013

i am currently working on the storyboard for a title sequence, and i have to animate it now.

As you can see in the picture i have a light blue background that has a circular shaped mask, and everything  happens inside this mask in multiple layers on the back.

my problem is i want this mask to be animated, and to have a watercolor felling. so i thought of using video footage of ink, you know the typical video of ink falling into water and sort of expanding.

i have no problem making the video appear inside the ink stain, but my question is: is there a way to make a video follow the shape of an object? so i can make this ink footage adapt to different mask  forms, for example a circle or a triangle, or even more complicated forms like, i dont know a human silhouette?

i am thinking something that stretches the video along a path with the shape of the object may be the solution.

Illustrator :: Create Single Path To Type On Not Compound Path From Many Paths?

May 11, 2012

I have some negative space I created(black area, see first image) that I want to fill with type, not just a simple fill.

Basically I want to create the negative space from a bunch of small minus signs(-) that need to line up as they go across. If I type on each path one at a time as the text doesn't line up that way. This needs to be one continuous path. (see second image)

Unfortunately if I add them together, it creates a compound path, which you cannot type on, unless I am mistaken? So I need them to be a path, not a compound object.

Illustrator :: Block Text To Path -> Text Flow Along Resulting Path

Nov 5, 2013

I'm trying to create an effect of small text following the outline of very large bold block text (see picture).  The idea I had was to first create the 'ME' in very large font as text.  Then convert that text to an object / path using "Object -> Flatten Transparency... -> "Convert all text to outline"".  Then, select that path and use the "Type along path" tool.

However, when I use that process, the resulting path is a compound path that therefore the Type Along Path tool doesn't work.  Any pointers on how to achieve this?  The image below I just used the pencil to trace the letters (quick and dirty) but the result is choppy, etc.

Illustrator :: Can't Make A Clipping Mask?

Nov 7, 2012

URL....Everything works fine until I get to the part where it says to: 'Copy the crimson circle and Paste it In Front'..first of all I think the copy should cover everything else, right? At least it looks that way in the tutorials' picture. Well, it doesn't cover and it seems to stay in place.

I look in the Layers palette and it shows that a Copy has been made and I look under Edit and it says under Undo: Undo Paste In Front.Next I am suppose to Select the Crimson Circle Copy and The Blend and then go to Object > Clipping Mask > Make

Rather than it working I get an Error Message that says: 'Can't Make Clipping Mask, The Top Selected Object Must Be A Path, A Compound Shape, A text Object Or A Group Of Those'

No matter what I do I cannot make a Clipping Mask in this manner.I have read a lot about Clipping Mask today and have looked in the FAQ's to no avail.

Illustrator :: How To Inverse Clipping Mask

May 19, 2013

I'm working on a tshirt and can only use 3 colors (Green, Black and Yellow).  If you look at the attached image, I need to make the brown color that is inside of the squirrel mask out the items behind it (corn stalks, rectangle and part of the "R" in "Corn Maze".  The tshirt will be grey so once the Clipping Mask is applied, it will allow the grey tshirt to become the color for the squirrel.

The problem I'm running into is if I duplicate the squirrel and use him as a clipping mask, it does the opposite of what I'm trying to accomplish.  I need to mask out everything inside the squirrel, not everything outside the squirrel.  In photoshop, I could just inverse the selection.  Not sure how to inverse a Clipping Mask.
