Illustrator :: Tracing Object And Removing Background
Dec 14, 2012I have a JPG file with a colored design on a white background. I'd like to extract the design without the background and be able to use it as an .ai file. I tried tracing it and then expanding it, but when I copy the design and place it on a different background, the white background comes with it. How can I isolate just the design?

I have made an object (heliotrope) with the pen tool by drawing a path > increasing the stroke to 20px > expand appearance and then making a rectangle and then applying a mesh to the triangle which I then moved over the initial path (w/the 20px stroke) and bent into place
Next I used the mesh tool to add several longitudinal mesh lines
Now I would like to color this shape but I cannot seem to apply a gradient to it and when I go to use the paintbrush I am only allowed to apply one color.
I'll select the brush and the entire object changes to the newly chosen color. I want to be able to set one color as the base and then to be able to set a darker hue/shade so that I can add highlights and shades for depth and style.
Illustrator :: Grayscales Print As Shades Of Pink?
Feb 26, 2014I have a business card that uses various shades of gray. When I print from Adobe Illustrator or make a PDF and print that with high quality setting, the grays print as pink. Light grays print as pastel pink; darker grays as pink+gray tints. Odd.
If I print using standard settings (Mac, Print, click Setup, choose Quality and Media in standard Mac print dialog, choose print for plain paper, quality=standard) the colors look normal but the quality is so-so -- the lighter grays print with a diffusion dither and there is an occasion light blue stripe in the gray.
If I print using quality=high, I get the pink. Light pink where I am using 40% gray, darker pink for 50% gray, a gray+pink mix for 80% gray.
Printing other docs using other apps have no issue. Just this document using Adobe Illustrator. And if I save as PDF and print using Mac Preview app, same problem.
See attached. Everything pink should be gray except the bright magenta diamond in the M.
Mac OS X 10.9.2, Adobe Illustrator CS 6 16.0.4, printing to Canon MP610 inkjet printer.

May 21, 2013The recolor tool does not recolor shades into shades but only shades into a fixed color. Eg if I have a gradient blue to green and recolor the green into red, then it won't be a gradient anymore. Also, using eg. antialiasing for lines you get lighter shades of the chosen color, again maing it problematic to change the line into another color. What to do?

I like how the effect looks, it turned the background into a blotchy pattern contrasting from greys to khaki tones. Is it possible to set the parameters so that it would contrast between shades of lavender and khaki instead of the greys it is using now?

Dec 12, 2012working in CS6, OS 10.6.8. I'm working on a 3-color screen print CD label, and the colors will be a white background, plus black and a PMS color. I've been recoloring some CMYK artwork to use in the design, and really liked the results of Recolor Artwork (selecting only black and the spot color), until I noticed that when I selected "tints & shades" it converted everything with black in it to process (which I know Adobe says is why you shouldn't select that option).
But my question is, how can I get the same effect (that is, using shades of the spot color "mixed" with black) without having it convert the shades to process? I'm sure it involves overprinting, but I'm hitting a big hole in my knowledge.

Aug 29, 2013I have a photo which I need removing an object. The photo is of a butterfly. However, there is a white sign with Thanks written. I didn't notice the sign when I took the photo. I'm not sure what is the best way to remove this sign.

Jan 11, 2006I have something to add (sort of) to it. I work with Horse Advertisements and I get requests asking me to remove a horse from the background (say, a winning background) and put it like in a field or just against another pic. Can someone help me in doing this. What tool is best to use? Ive tried the background eraser tool, but I leave gaps in my erasing and it looks really fake. If you look on my website, on the front page (its not an ad that I did) but it was done with photoshop. I asked the lady how she did it and she said that she did it with the pen tool. I know what the pen tool is, but I cant figure out how to cut the background out of it, and when I cut and paste it into another doc. it usually says (say I'm trying to put it into illustrator or indesign) it says that the Photoshop segment is too large to export. Then when it is the right size, it turns out to be really pixelized. (Its not very good quality.

Jul 23, 2013Question about Xara Extreme 5. When I click on an object, there are a bunch of square dots around the outsite. When I use the pencil tool to go from one dot to another dot, waiting for the ~ to appear, Xara "sometimes" removes the "little" piece I am trying to remove... but other times, removes 90% of the object, keeping the tiny piece of the image (I am trying to remove). Is there a trick or shortcut so that Xara ALWAYS removes the smaller section? I thought that it would be, if you are selecting a piece (i.e. 10% of the selected image), it would remove it... but nope, sometimes it keeps the 10% and removes the 90%. Very frustrating and obviously I do not understand the use of this tool.

Oct 8, 2013I have a pillow bevel applied to a paint splatter brush image, and I'm having trouble with the shadows. I want to save this splatter as a transparent PNG. The problem is that a drop shadow effect is showing up when I save it this way. I think it's a "shading" setting rather than a true drop shadow, as there is no drop shadow set in the layer styles.
The shadow does not appear when a white background is applied. It only shows when the background is transparent. I've tried reducing the shading opacity in the bevel dialogue, and this does get rid of the drop shadow....the problem is that it also removes the shading from the paint splatter, making the image look flat instead of raised.

Illustrator :: Removing Box On EPS File
Oct 30, 2013I load an .eps file on Illustrator CC on Mac OS X 10.8.5 and can't remove the box and edit the EPS. Nothing works, re-save with create compatible file as PDF, Save with legacy format, and another old illustrator format, etc.
Then I send to a friend that have Illustrator CS5.5 and he save it and re-send me to me... Now can edit the file. Why can't do it on Illustrator CC?

Oct 6, 2012I have simple a 3D bottle shape created from about 16 points and I am trying to map a gif image on to it usning CS5. No matter what I have done (work from a new document, etc.) I always get the error message. I also receive this error when I attempt to map a jpg image on to the same shape. I have attempted this on three different Windows 7 machines running CS5 with the same result. When I try it with CS6 the program closes with a catastrophic error and no message. I do not receive this error using the default symbols. The gif and jpg images are imported and imbedded into the document and then moved to the symbols library.

Jul 14, 2013I am having some trouble with a file in Illustrator CS6. Within a layer, when I add a fill to an object, the fill doesn't block out the object paths beneath. For instance, say I have a square object overlapping a circle object in Layer 1. The square object is above the circle in the layer. When I add a fill to the square, the circle stroke still shows through the square even though the overlapped part should be blocked out by the fill. The square is set to normal visibility, and I have made sure that there are no duplicate paths that would account for what I am seeing. (I.e., it's not a case where there's a second identical circle path that is on top of the square, so that it remains visible in spite of the fill.)
Other details:
- I'm mainly working with a white fill, but the problem is the same with fills of any color
- When there's a fill color in the circle path as well, the circle's fill color *is* blocked out—just not its stroke.
- I have restarted Illustrator and restarted my computer and these have not changed anything.
- There are other layers within the same document where the normal layering rules work.
- I tried copy/pasting some of the problem objects into a new document, and in the new document, the fill works properly.
- If I move the problem objects to another layer, then the fill works as it should. But as I'm dealing with a number of paths, it doesn't make sense to create a layer for each to solve the problem.
I can't tell if it's a matter of working in too large or complex a file.

I can't get the knife tool to work and neither eraser works, nor does there appear to be anything online about it. Because of the way the path is, resizing or turning it doesn't work either.
Illustrator :: Removing Part Of An Image?
Jul 19, 2012This is something I SHOULD be able to figure out, but for some reason, I'm having trouble. I'm designing a t-shirt. It can only have 4 colors. The "5th color" is actually the color of the shirt itself. So I have waves with a dolphin over them (covering them, not above them). The dolphin is outlined in one of the 4 colors, but I want the dolphin itself to be the color of the t-shirt (i.e., no color at all - or see-through, so it is actually the color of the shirt). How do I remove the color of the dolphin for the printer? If it was just the dolphin over a solid color, I could do that. But since it's over many colors (the waves)
PS I'm using CS4 on an iMac.
Illustrator :: Removing Tints From Brushes
Sep 18, 2013using brushes in Illustrator 5.5, I cannot find a way to change the "tint" of an art brush to a solid color. I have dragged the brush from the brush library to an ai document to try to modify it ...no luck. I have expanded the brush to art outlines ...no luck. I have expanded the transparency. All color and transparency panels indicate 100%, however the object is still a transparent tint. I have tried cutting and pasting the expanded object without luck.
I have read the reference manual on this subject, but nowhere does it tell how to remove the tint and make the newly created object a solid color.

In the end the letters will all be the light blue color that "Kuhns" is right now, I'm just using the different colors to explain my problem. I want the pink part of the "C" to be in front of the "K", but I want the black part of the "C" to be behind the "K", giving the illusion that the "C" is passing through the "K" (this will only be visible cause of the drop shadows on both letters, since they wil both be the same color) Is there a way to do this?
I got this effect in Photoshop, but I need to do it with vectors because the size of the image that has to be uploaded to my website is so small that you lose all detail if its a bitmap (52 pixels x 103 pixels) In addition to the effect explained above I am trying to get a bevel effect. In Photoshop it works and is easy to do but in illustrator the settings are all different and anything I enter looks totally different.
The settings that I'm using in Photoshop are: Style: inner bevel, technique: smooth,depth: 1%, direction: up, size 10 px, soften 0 px, angle:,120 degrees, altitude: 30 degrees, highlight mode: screen, Opacity: 75%, shadow mode: multiply, Opacity:75%. How do I get this same effect in illustrator?
