View 2 RepliesI'm trying to create icons (.ico) files in Gimp and I am looking forways to preview the result directly in gimp.
To do this I'm currently using the "New view" functionality where Idisable most things (layer boundary, rules...) to display the image inits original size (100% zoom). I also selected the Padding coloraccording to the background of the image to visualize it in proper context.
The above setup works fine for images with a fixed background color, butnot so much with images that have a transparent background.
From what I was able to figure out, the only place where you cancustomize how transparency is displayed is by going to Preferences >Display. However, changing these options affects all open windows an notjust the current view. In addition, the possible choices for howtransparency is displayed are somewhat limited (no colors other thanwhite, gray and black).
With that said, is there any way of previewing the image while beingable to customize how transparency is displayed?
I Trying to make Civ V (A pc game) icons like this:
I think that if i used e brushes and gradients i will make things like that.
I have had a bad problem with GIMP 3.8 on Ubuntu 13.04 x64 the last few weeks
Basically, every icon in the toolbox has a large empty space to the right of it. The occurs both in single window view and in modal view.
When I resize the toolbox the icons keep this right space around them, always re-positioning so that most of the icons are not included in the toolbox.
The only way I can see all the tools is to reduce the width of the toolbox to one icon, then they all line up vertically. But I have having it set up like this, and even then the last few are cut off by the bottom of the screen.
I have gone through all the settings menus and can't seem to find anything about it. I removed GIMP with the --purge option and reinstalled; this fixed it for a day, now it's right back to where it was.
I don't have any icons in the GIMP menu. I only have a dog icon replacing many of the icons. How do I get the descriptive icons?

I have only started using gimp, so I might be missing something simple.
I am currently trying to edit some graphics for a newsletter, using GIMP 2.6. However, I can't get the icons in the Toolbox to make any changes on the graphics. These include the Selection, Pencil and Paintbrush icons.
I have tried saving the graphic in several formats, including GIMP's .xcf format, but that doesn't work.
I dunno if it is me, kde, gimp, or what.. but I can be editing along..yada yada.. do this, do that, and then look over and the toolbox on the left is missing most of the icons.. kinda like the scaling is wrong and the icons are pushed off the bottom under the tool options underneath it. sometimes it takes the usual layout with like 5-6 icons wide and replaces it with only 2 wide, sometimes only 1 wide. I tried stretching it and bringing it back, floating and redocking.. all with no fixy.
The only way I have figured out how to "undo" this is to close and restart gimp. Which is a pain when you have a mess of open files in various states of not done yet..
What I'm trying to do is make custom app icons for my (Android) phone. I want them to have a transparent, glassy look to them. Here's a picture of the style I'm talking about:

I found this on a website that supposedly has tutorials for this kind of thing, but I couldn't find anything except a download link, which I found on this part of the site (scroll down until you get to "3D Transparent Glass Text Effect"):
[URL]......
Thing is, the downloaded .zip doesn't seem to contain anything I can use. There's a .pat file, but I get an error every time I try to get GIMP to use it. There's also a .psd file (which I know is technically for Photoshop), but when I open that in GIMP, it's just two layers of a slightly faded black text saying "etc" on a background, all covered up by a big black rectangle.
How to create custom shortcut arrow for icons the default shortcut arrows in windows vista are huge you can use the program Ultimate Windows Tweaker UWT v2.2 (to clear off the shortcut arrow completely) or Vista Shortcut Manager to give a beautiful blue arrow
I am going to show you how to do it with xara
1. make a 256 x 256 pixels (px) square (very thin line 0.5 px , no fill)
2. draw an arrow inside in the left down corner
3. give it a drop shadow if needed
4. export as png
5. use program Iconfx
[URL]....
or
[URL]....
6. open the png in iconfx (drag and drop)
7. a "new image dialog box will open" click ok
8. advanced import dialog box: click ok
9. untitled with the png image in 48 x 48
10. now click the windows icon in the toolbar, that will make the icon
11. save the icon in a folder - give the name empty.ico
12. go to C:WindowsSystem32
paste and replace the the empty.ico which is in that folder (if you want backup the original one rename it to emptyoriginal.ico then restart explorer
this empty.ico is an overlay above any shortcuts for applications, files etc.
Now you will be able to see the custom made shortcut arrow over any shortcuts
Can I change the program buttons so that they look like the same as Photoshops?
Despite using many times now, I always find myself searching for the cropping tool
Solution: make the icons the same as Photoshop's
I'm hoping that replacing the graphics is easy as replacing a folder full of graphics.
How do I get the dashboards/icons to display at the bottom--they are on the left now? (2012)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am adding a couple of icons to a website. They are 32x32. I produced them in gimp with a simple filled rectangle and text added on top using Verdana bold and Verdana ordinary, 14 and 12 point respectively
The result looks rather poor and certainly very amateurish alongside the Facebook and YouTube icons in between. I have tried different fonts - no improvement. Tried Hinting - didn't make them any better. Tried Anti-aliasing and this just added a range of blurred colours to the white text!
Here is the link: the two icons are in the top left column - SOS UK and SOS SWE SOS Animals
I also attach one here.
I am trying to modify a set of icons for the status bar of my cell phone. I have tried Paint.net (recommended by many themers) but the color never looks right. I can colorize the icons individually but that will take a long time to do all 71 icons. I tried using a macro to run Gimp and repeat the task on a loop but the "Export Image as PNG" dialog box keeps opening under the stack of Gimp windows and messes the macro up.
Is there any way to change the color of multiple .png files as a batch operation?

If there is a setting to increase the size of the icons for each layer.
So that when I am looking at all the layers in Layers Tab they are much bigger I can see them . what they contain.
I just can't really see much at the moment the layer icons are so small. Not really a problem but I'd like bigger layer icons.
I've installed my new windows CS6, all my .psd files have the 'generic icons' windows give to files they don't recognize. Everything else has normal icons (i.e. Illustrator files) but the Photoshop files are blank. This is true whether I'm on any type of viewer format, i.e. details, thumbnails.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I looked up some tutorials on how to do this because I wanted to maybe create some grungey brushes from these photos I took but I can't seem to make a test of what the tutorials tell me to do turn up in my brush palette. I followed both of these tutorials: [URL]. Saved the files as .gbr and .gih (i think is the other one it told me to do) and neither show up with my brushes.
In a related matter, I've never been able to find an option to refresh my brushes, there's no refresh button with the rest of them down the bottom of the palette.
i like to create grip , all it gave me is to use the filter -> render -> grid plugin , now for my job all i want to do is if i have for example square image like 1530 x 1530 and i want that the grid will be 8 x 8 matrix , when the grid lines are 1 pix width.
i dont what to calculate the right spacing on each grid cell as the grid filter gives me i just what GIMP to calculate me the right spacing for this image and grip line width.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that one can download brush sets where several brushes are contained in a single file. Is it possible to use GIMP to create one of these files, or is that strictly a Photoshop thing?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create a bmp file from my xcf file (Gimp OSX 2.8.4). I do this by exporting it and choosing bmp as the file extension. When I look a the new image in Mac Preview, it looks OK. The image displays properly and the file type shows "Windows bitmap image" as its kind. All seems well...
However, when I try to use this file in OpenGL, it renders in green (its an image of natural wood). So what's up? I go to the command line and type "file wood.bmp" and the response is "wood.bmp: data". It should say "wood.bmp: PC bitmap, Windows 3.x format, 128 x 128 x 12" (or something similar).
Somehow this file has not been created quite correctly.
Someone wants me to make them a logo for their website, and they want a "Backspace" keyboard key underneath their text.
Is it possible to create one of these "Backspaces Keys" of my own, or is it only possible to copy one from Google somewhere and render the image in Gimp to make it look more like a logo? How do I go about doing this in the Gimp format if it is possible?
I have difficulties managing the following: I have a disk area (A minimap) and I want to add one (or two) small borders (that look bumpy) around the disk.
I basically want to achieve something like this: [URL]..... As you can see it has an outer border ring (with a very small line in the middle) and another inner ring. The outer ring drops a little shadow onto the inner ring.
I tried the following: Made a circle (with selection tool) -> Selection -> Shrink (3px) -> Filled with grayish color. Now I have a ring and I tried to apply various filters onto this ring to create a border (mainly decor -> border filter, but they all produced weird results).
I start with a background. Then I bring up a new image which sometimes has a picture of my background on it - it isn't a pic of the chosen image. And - I don't know when to create a new layer.I have the background as layer base, then I create a new layer, then I bring up an image to paste in the layer & on the background i.e. I copy, then paste on the background, but nothing happens, and the layer I created is empty.I'm all mixed up. What is the sequence for creating a new layer, then copying & pasting it to the background??

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create the attached two logos I drew. The top is a stand alone "A" logo with a space background inside the star and a metalic A and loop.
The second also is metalic lettering except for the s which I would like to be bright yellow at the start and fade down the underline.
I've tried to create a rotating Planet for my program ( the rotation itself is fine... but it feels like the image is moving left inside a circle frame ) . I was told I need to add depth, bump so to say. I've tried to add a bit of bumpmap with gimp
Filter-> Map -> Bumpmap . Azimuth = 134, Elevation = 46, Depth = 15, Waterlevel = 87, Ambient = 57 .
But it does not feel round... I'm obviously no expert at Gimp. What should I do with the following image to make it feel more round, the center should feel like it's higher...and the corners should feel like they are going around to the back.
