GIMP :: JPEG Looks Different Than It Indicates?
Nov 18, 2012
I am trying to remove some unwanted buildings and replace them with sky. I created a mask, removed the offending buildings, used the clone tool and recreated the sky in its place. All looked great in Gimp. When I export to jpeg, I see the outline of the mask I used and what appears to be areas that were not completely filled with sky using the clone tool.

I have Gimp2.8 in windows. Under 'save as' it shows only xcf and 3 other related formats but not jpeg etc.
My friends using 2.6 in ubuntu have all the formats to save as. Is it that in windows you cannot save to any other format.

I get an error message when trying to open a file that I previously saved(exported) from gimp. It says,
"Plug-in crashed: "file-jpeg.exe"
(C:Program FilesGIMP 2libgimp2.0plug-insfile-jpeg.exe)
The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal state. You may want to save your images and restart GIMP to be on the safe side."I can open other jpeg's just not this certain one.

You know how all pictures are rectangles....
Can you take a picture of a car; select it with the scissors tool ; put it in a new picture file layer; and export it in the shape of a car?
Then when you put it over another picture, it is already edited.
Probably not, but I thought I would ask.

I've searched for hours for directions on how I can use my 3D template in GIMP. I purchased the template from a stock photo site. It already does have a 3D appearance with proper shadowing etc. I am creating a 3D book cover. So I only want to fit the jpg image I created,. the flat 2-D one, to my blank 3-D book cover template. I also want to add text to the spine of the book, or an image of this text if that's how it's done.
This would be the same process I think with any sort of 3D template and 2D image. For example, some people create boxes and other items in 3D. But I don't need to know how to create the 3D effect. I already have that in the template I purchased. I just need to know how to add my jpeg image to the template so that it fits properly.

Today I shot some more photos and was going to send them to a friend. After I resized them, I tried to save the new file as JPEG and there was no option to do so. I even opened one of yesterday's camera files and tried to save that as a JPEG, and still didn't see the option. All I get is something called .xcf.
I looked at the tutorial, and it said to make sure the mode was set to RGB. It was; I'd never changed this. It seems I've broken something, but I don't know where to look in order to fix it.

I wanted to know what the difference between .JPEG and .JPG were. I found this link:
[URL].......
Basically they are the same extension and on older computers they could not hold more than a 3 character abbreviated file extension.
But, I want know, what other extensions are relative to Gimp, or what and why is .xcf, .png, .gif, .jpeg, .jpg, the extensions always used? Are there others? What is the relevance to .xcf, and the plug ins are all saved as .scm, .gbr, etc. That part makes sense, but I have a plug in for G'MIC with a strange extension (.par2) and I cannot install it.

I'm having an interesting problem where Windows doesn't recognize GIMP's jpeg exports. This could be due to the fact that I stitched together a composite photo in Windows Photo Gallery (Hugin wasn't working right), and Windows didn't recognize the output, even though GIMP did. So I imported into GIMP, did my usual editing, and re-exported it.
Unfortunately, Windows still doesn't recognize the file as valid (ex. won't open in Paint), and I can't figure out why. I'd attached said file, but it's too large...
Mostly, I am trying to figure out if this is a GIMP issue (unlikely, since other, specifically non-composite, exports still work) or how to resolve the issue, especially given that Windows Photo Gallery might be causing the issue.

How I can convert a picture from a jpeg & convert that to a vector based eps. This is going to be for a cycling jersey for a friend but the designer only accepts vector artwork. I don't know if I would be able to do this with GIMP. I've added an attachment of the file I want to fix.

I've been a GIMP user for a couple of years and have just encountered a new and unexpected problem with version 2.8.4. I'm attempting to export a file to JPEG format, and am receiving the message:
"Saving 'FILENAME' failed: JPEG image plug-in could not save image."
I ensured I had adequate disk space, tried saving to different locations (including other drives on our network), tried resizing the image, and nothing will work. The message just recurs each time, no matter what I try.

For some reason Gimp 2.8 forces me to save in xcf format. Most times I want to save a file in jpeg or png format. Having to save as xcf, and then export to jpeg or png is a pain in the unmentionables. Especially when reopening the file for editing, requiring another pointless dance with the export system.
Is there some module, upgrade, improvement, fork or other means by which export is merged with save/save as functionality, thus removing the additional steps in the process of saving a file? Ideally it should involve nothing more than hitting Ctrl S for an a file that already has a name. Put another way, something that works the way everything else does.

GIMP 2.6.10-1 on Debian 6 does not open JPEG files recently written by itself. The program freezes and the only way out is to reboot. Older JPEG files are opened as usual, and the problem files can be opened in Digikam and Fotoxx. A sample problem file is attached.

I have a jpeg image of a motorcycle on a pure yellow background. I want to make the yellow transparent. Naturally there are a lot of spaces within the motorcycle image that contain yellow.
I followed instructions I found...
Removing the background of an image
1) add an alpha channel to your layer
2) use colors/color to alpha and use the background color
This results in the checkerboard being applied to the motorcycle, not the yellow background. I assume that's okay.
This makes all the pixels with the background color transparent, and those with a close color partially transparent.
Then:
- select the background with the magic wand,
- grow the selection by a couple of pixels to ensure that the border of the sprite is in the selection (the most important work of color-to-alpha is on the border pixels, so they shouldn't be protected)
This selects only the area outside the bicycle, but I don't mind reselecting smaller areas, if I can.
- grow the selection by a couple of pixels to ensure that the border is in the selection (the most important work of color-to-alpha is on the border pixels, so they shouldn't be protected)

I'm using -color-matrix on a bunch of images to change colour temperature slightly:
convert -quality 94 -color-matrix "1.0 0 0 0 0.975 0 0 0 0.95" x.jpg y.jpg
Problem is, in sky areas, this causes patchy colours and banding issues. However, and this is the strange part, if I convert to TIFF (even using JPEG compression), and then apply the colour matrix, I don't get these issues.
BUT, even wierder, if I then try to convert the fine-looking TIFF image to JPEG again (even with -quality 100), I get these patchy colours again.
This is with GIMP 2.6.12 on a Fedora Linux system.

I have a not-moving .jpeg image and I want to put 5 different animated .gif images on top of that .jpeg image background but I don't want those 5 .gif images to stop moving.
This is what I'm talking about:
I want to learn how to make .gif images like these using GIMP 2.8.6. I have searched for tutorials for this but they are only for putting a single gif on top of a still image, not multiple gifs on top of a still image.

I'll try to write this logically, but as logic has failed to get me the output I want, I suspect somewhere there will be something highly illogical...
I am trying to export a JPEG file, complete with images. I have setup the original file to 2362x602 pixels, at 300 ppi (making a canvas approximately 200x50mm). This is confirmed through Image -> Canvas Size.
Now if I want to print to paper, I can check the settings through Image -> Print Size, to confirm what size I will get.
What I want is to be able to do the same thing for an export jpg function. I need the JPG to come out at a specific dimension, not a specific pixel size. If I export my file now (File -> Export) as a jpg, I end up with a jpeg much wider than 200mm. A quick rightclick->properties shows me the jpg is still 2362x602 pixels, at '300dpi.' So why is that not the size I expect it to be?
