GIMP :: 2.8 Does Not Save In JPEG?
Jun 17, 2012
I have Gimp2.8 in windows. Under 'save as' it shows only xcf and 3 other related formats but not jpeg etc.
My friends using 2.6 in ubuntu have all the formats to save as. Is it that in windows you cannot save to any other format.

I have used gimp for a few years, today i installed windows 7. i was excited to try gimp on win7 but unfortunately its the new version of gimp that i hate . anyway, when i try to save an image there are only a few formats available: xcf and other GIMP formats i guess. there is no gimp brush format or bmap or jpeg or anything! I am making a timelapse for youtube.

I've attached an image of the options that are available to me when i select save as.

I've been a GIMP user for a couple of years and have just encountered a new and unexpected problem with version 2.8.4. I'm attempting to export a file to JPEG format, and am receiving the message:
"Saving 'FILENAME' failed: JPEG image plug-in could not save image."
I ensured I had adequate disk space, tried saving to different locations (including other drives on our network), tried resizing the image, and nothing will work. The message just recurs each time, no matter what I try.

For some reason Gimp 2.8 forces me to save in xcf format. Most times I want to save a file in jpeg or png format. Having to save as xcf, and then export to jpeg or png is a pain in the unmentionables. Especially when reopening the file for editing, requiring another pointless dance with the export system.
Is there some module, upgrade, improvement, fork or other means by which export is merged with save/save as functionality, thus removing the additional steps in the process of saving a file? Ideally it should involve nothing more than hitting Ctrl S for an a file that already has a name. Put another way, something that works the way everything else does.

I got this workflow,
1) From LR export to PS
2) Do all essential editings.
3) Save. File become 'xyz.tiff' now. (I want to keep this as master copy)
4) Crop to 4r, Save a Jpeg copy as 'xyz 4r.jpg'
5) PS save it as a copy, but do not automatically open the Jpeg copy. The tiff remains opened. I have to manullay Open, browse to it, and open the Jpeg. The 'Open Recent' list also do not list 'xyz 4r.jpg'.
6) Do 4r sharpening for the 'xyz 4r.jpg', save it.
Â
Basically the files I want to keep and worked on is like this: NEF -> xyz.tiff -> xyz 4r.jpg -> xyz sml.jpg(maybe)
Â
Now, it there a way in step (5) to have PS save the JPEG copy, and automatically open it? I don't care if the Tiff copy remains opened or not, I am done with it.

I got a new computer (Windows 7) at work this April and as of today, when I work on any of my JPEG images in PS CS5,suddenly it has defaulted its "Save As" to JPEG2000. How did this default change and how do I get it to default save as. JPEG again? There was nothing I noticed and no warning as to why this has changed, I didn't touch a thing!
Â
(Last week, Adobe had to work with our IT manager to fix a problem that started occuring with my new Adobe Acrobat Pro 11 program. They had to log into my computer and change a registry thing to get it to work properly again...also something that changed without warning!!)

From the start, I wasn't able to save to jpeg without getting a dcm extension (no jpg extension). However, if I saved to Multi-picture Format, I would get the familiar .jpg and everything worked fine for a while. This morning I cannot find a file format in "save as" that results in the .jpg file extension.

I have a PSD file (16bits/prophoto RGB) with some layers. I combine the layers to ONE and change the bit depth to 8 bits.
Then I do one of two things:
Â
(a) I save the file for the web in JPEG 90% high-quality and with sRGB ... filesize 340 602
(b) I change the color profile to sRGB and save the file as JPEG in the highest quality (10) ... filesize 174 549
Â
I am at loss here. How on earth is it possible that the second file is almost half the size as the one saved for the web? What effect causes this? It is very easy to save for yhe web but as long as the JPEGs are that bigger it's no option.

I am working on many files today and for some reason, even though they are JPG files, when I save them, the dialog box comes up and wants to save it as a PSD. It's wasting a TON of time because I have to change it to JPG even though the file is already. I tried the open as-JPG option on any of them and it gives me the error message of -"Could not complete your request because the file-format module cannot parse the file". I'm in CS6 because there were too many issues with Photoshop CC.

I got a file that's only let me do Save for Web in jpg format. I choose png24, click save and it changes to jpg in the save dialog. Then I created a blank doc, copy everything from the problem file over to the new file and I can Save for Web in png just fine.

i just installed my new Photoshop cs6 (with the design standard package, student edition), and set about to make some graphics.
Â
i selected a new file, 300ppi, and set to work.
Â
after a while, i flatten the image and go to save when i go to save drop down, i get a bunch of odd cool-sounding options, raw, and tiff.seeing as i just made a normal no-frills graphic, i choose tiff.
Â
when i re-open image, i get a really crappy version of the image, with some odd color bars to one side.

When ever I try and save as a png or jpeg photoshop cc crashes and the file doesn't save. Also there is a warning button next to save that when i click it it says:
Â
"the current file format must be saved as a copy because: It will not save all the document layers."

I just finished creating a multi-layered document with photos and text and tried to save it as a JPEG so that I could use it in a slide show.I had done this a couple of days earlier and now PS6 won't let me.
Â
The only option is a GIF which looks lousy. The only thing I can think of is that I've recently downloaded ACR 7.1beta.

CS4, Mac OS X 10.7.5. JPEG is suddenly no longer offered as an option. Save for web still works, but I want to export a large image (not for web) using Save As... which I could always do previouly. I can't see a plug-in for it in the File Formats folder, but I don't know whether it used a separate plug-in anyway.

I just bought a mac, so I am completely mac stupid. I am having to learn everything all over again. I am running photoshop cs and when i go to save a pic as a jpeg, I then go to the folder that I saved it to and its not there. I can find it by typing the file name in the search menu. But when I click on it from there it keeps opening it up in photoshop. It shouldnt do that because its supposed to be just a regular jpeg.

I cannot save some images I've edited in the JPEG Format. Although I choose JPEG and overwrite the proposed filename (always xy.psd (!), I've selected already JPEG Format) with something like xy.jpg, the file is saved in photoshop fileformat (the file is something like 25mb big, it has the ending jpg but cannot be read from another application like ms paint -> original size of image is about 3 megs, jpg fileformat...). I also don't get the dialog box where I can choose the settings (like quality..).

Using Photoshop CS2 on Mac OSX. I made an image, originally as a Photoshop (.psd) file. I took a JPEG and copied a .bmp on top of it, made some adjustments. Now I want to save as a JPEG (or any basic web format), but Photoshop won't let me. My only options for format are:
Photoshop
Large Document Format
Photoshop PDF
Photoshop Raw
TIFF
What can I do? I need this to be JPEG or GIF.

I made a billboard size image, which is roughly 150wx90h in 300 resolution in 8 bits and RGB mode and then save it as .PSB(since its a large file, its only applicable to save as .psb) after saving, I decided to save it as JPEG, after clicking file>save as. In the list of options there is no .JPEG included in the saving option, the ones are there are .TIFF, .RAW, .PSB, .DCM
When i tried saving it as .TIFF and chose Jpeg in the list, the result image came about 1.3GB size file which is i think odd..

Suddenly I am unable to save .psd and .tif (maybe others) to .jpeg due to 'program error'. My 'solution' for the moment is to save the .psd using maximum compatibility, then import into Lightroom, then export from Lightroom as .jpeg (ugh!) The .psd mode is 8-bit RGB. I have 155GB of space left on the HDD. I was able to save to .jpeg a few days ago,

I'm sure this is a stupid question - or an easy answer that I'm missing. Sometimes, when I edit a RAW or NEF photo in PS2, I try to save it as a JPG file. But the choices I am given are TIF, or PSD, or other large file type. Other times, I am presented with a long list of file types, including JPG, JPEG and JPG2000.

This seemed like a big update and took a while on my multiple computers. Before the update I was having glitches exporting my xar drawings to jpg files. It was hit or miss with only small fragments saved, weird file extensions such as Einstein.xar.jpg, needing to save as instead, needing to type the extension, etc. I always had to check my save folder afterwards to make sure exporting worked. It seems like this is now solved and have not had a problem exporting since.
If I am working on a xar file and want to make a jpg file from it, is there any difference between exporting it as a jpg and saving it as a jpg?
