GIMP :: Gradient Filling Whole Layer Instead Of Selection?
Mar 13, 2013
I was just starting to experiment with the gradient tool last week. I could have a circle as the selection, use the gradient, and then it would make the gradient within my circle all nice.But now whenever I try to use the tool, it fills my entire layer with the gradient instead.I know I still have the circle selected.

This question is more theoretical, as I have found a work around. On a layer, I have a gray color, which I sample, and it becomes the desired Foreground color.
I would like to Fill a Selection in an Alpha Channel with this gray color.
However, when I view the Alpha channel, my forground color is lost to black/white, which I understand, as the Alpha channel is a gray scale image.
But, I am able to sample a gray Swatch to make a Foreground color, but how can I preserve my chosen Foreground gray selected from a Layer? The only way that I know would be to make a new Swatch, and then use that when I am in Channels.

I have been using Gimp for awhile (love it!) and have always used layer masks with no problems. But for some reason when I create a layer mask by filling in an area with black it isn't 100% opacity. Everything seems to show 100% opacity, but I can see the layers underneath (the mask is maybe at 90%??). If I "show layer mask" it is black where it should be and white where it should be, it doesn't look transparent. All my layers are set to "normal" mode. I'm at a lost as to what setting I must have changed?

When I choose blend, the tool options dialog comes up, but there is no selection for gradient (like "full spectrum," for example) available. The only option is "FG to Transparent."
I have tried uninstalling GIMP and then re-installed it, but there is still no gradient selection available. I am using GIMP 2.8.2.

I've been using a radial gradient on a mask to create a selection, then messing with the selection with various tools, e.g. saturation, blur, contrast. All this on a duplicate of the background layer, of course.
On my most recent attempt, I noticed "rings" in a portion of the finished image. Is the sequence in which I'm using the tools the problem? Should I work on the top layer first, THEN create the selection? Here's a crop from the image:

I'm in the process of making a collage which consists of several layers with elements cut out from photographs (=these elements make up the composition). All elements have their separate layer.
My question is how can I apply a gradient overlay to a selection or 1 element(=on seperate layers).
I found how I can apply a gradient overlay but this is for the whole image instead of 1 specific element in the composition.

I'm occasionally using CD X4 just for fun (so i'm not that experienced). My friend who has a digital printer, once printed one of my designs but there were stripes (like you have when there's little ink in a printer) only in gradient filled areas When i fill a shape with gradient colors, i also see these stripes on my screen (when i look very close) in CD and also in pdf when i export the file. What can i do?

I was trying to teach myself to use gradients the other day... And now when I start a new project and try to paste in a photo as a new layer, it pastes as the gradient instead.
I have opened up both the gradients dialog and the gradients editor but cannot turn it off. In fact, when I open a brand new (empty) file, I can see the gradient attached to my pointer (mouse).

Rather than fill a shape with a solid color, I want to be able to fill it with a gradient color. How might I do this?

I'm trying to fill some existing arts (path, text, compound) with a just created gradient or a pattern loaded in the swatch..To achieve that I'm trying to change the path style:
GetPathStyle (myArt, &pathArtStyle);
pathArtStyle.strokePaint = false;
pathArtStyle.fillPaint = true;
pathArtStyle.fill.color.kind = kGradient;
pathArtStyle.fill.color.c.b.gradient = myGradient;
SetPathStyle (myArt, &pathArtStyle);
This works for kPathArt,but nothing happens for kTextFrameArt or kCompoundPathArt.
I also tried to program the procedure "How to Fill Text with a Pattern or Gradient in Adobe Illustrator" described for illustrator UI, w/o success.I have similar problem when trying to create a clipping using SetGroupClipped() while the clipping path is a text or compound. No clipping is done.

I am used to making a selection of part of the image - then you see the marching ants around your selection. Now in Photoshop at this stage I just press Ctrl-j and the selection gets put into its own layer above the current one. How do i do this in Gimp? and can you set up a keyboard shortcut for it?

I've come to GIMP from PS.
So, in PS if you make a selection and past it into a new layer it ends up in exactly the same position, however if I do the same on GIMP the selection is pasted at the top left hand corner. Then it's a major pain moving it to exactly the same place as the original
Most of my workflow is doing this sort of thing so it's real problem now.

pasting new layers happens so often it's getting a bit redundant to always move my cursor over to the Layers panel, right-click and select New Layer (just the way I have been doing it) to get around the Floating Selection behaviour.
I'm wondering if there is a keyboard shorcut, or if I can change the default behaviour to automatically paste it as a new layer and not as a floating selection, or if there is some other trick people here like using to save time.
As stated I'm using Mac OSX (ML) with GIMP 2.8.3.

I want to move a layer or a selection in a straight line.
for example: I have a layer and only want to move it horizontally and NOT vertically.
Is it possible in GIMP? If yes, how?

I want to fill a square selection that has been feathered, but when I fill/paintbucket the selection the fill is not solid and spills outside of the selection. I know it is doing this because the selection is feather, but is there anyway I can just get a solid fill?

I'm working in a multi layered CS5.1 Photoshop project (I did not create it). One of the adjustment layers in the project needs a layer masks, and when I create one it is not working properly. I make my selection that I want to mask off and create the layer mask it creates it with White and a 50% gray insted of black. Likewise when I alt click to create a layer mask it fills it in with black and 50% gray. The layer did have a 87% opacity to it so I thought this was causing the gray to happen, but when I turned the Opacity to 100% the mask was still being created with gray.
I use the fill tool to fill the gray with Black or White (Fill settings are opacity 100 and fill 100) it fills the mask more like my fill opacity is set to 50%. Likewise it does this for the pant brush as well. I have messed with every layer setting I can find including the layer mask panel and the adjustment layer panel, and nothing seem to work.

I am trying to follow this tutorial ...
[URL].........
Under #2 ... I am assuming the author means to draw with the Rounded Rectangle in Path mode ... am I assuming correct? I think it is suppose to be set to Path b/c it's the only way the Blend Mode reads "Pass Through"
this tuts steps aren't really numbered well but also under step two where the "BG" is filled with black the resulting shape is suppose to look like this :
But mine looks like this :
Notice how the left side has a lighter grey color and the one from the tut above is clear?
Also under step #2 ... where it comes to the part where I am to color the resulting shape with a yellow gradient this is what happens to me :
the entire canvas becomes colored ... ? Here are my Layers.
I select the "BG" layer to apply the gradient.
Here is the Layers panel from the tut which is confusing to me b/c the only difference I see is that the tuts panel has the down arrow and folder of the top layer/the "Body" layer seems to be greyed out... and the tut says something like : Activate the "BG" layer and cancel the mask view. Well, how to go about canceling the mask view and I looked all over Ps for such an "action" and also throughout the online manual.

I tried to get into the IRC to ask this question but I kept getting a 404 message. My question is....is "filling with transparent" the same as "tinting"? (explanation: In the image editor that Photobucket used to have I could change the color of something in a picture without losing the original shading, etc. They no longer have that image editor so I am looking for an Open Source program that is easy to use and has that feature.)

I have been continually annoyed, when creating a vector mask-heavy document, with trying to select vector mask points by dragging a rectangle only to find that it instead selects a layer higher up which has a larger vector mask.
The only workaround is to manually select the points of my mask or to drag a rectangle from outside the canvas, meaning I have to zoom out or scroll to the edge - sometimes annoying if I am zoomed in quite far.
I know that the move tool can be set to automatically select a layer, depending on what part of the image is clicked, but why is there not an option to turn this off for vector editing?

I'm working on a project for work and I just started to play with GIMP for real after knowing about it for a few years.
Basically what I would like to do is take a background image, put a grid on it, and fill the squares in the grid with custom (not random) colors. Every spot on the grid will have a fill color.
I was thinking that I would use Excel to create a comma delimited file with each cell containing the correct color, and I want to know if there's a way for GIMP to read a hex value, color the square of the grid corresponding to the hex value, then move on to the next square.

I've been working with this tutorial to modify some images. Link
I am unsure how to do one particular step however. Under 'Step 2', it reads:
"Next add a new layer to the image, and use the bucket to fill it with your tileable noise."
I can activate the bucket tool, but what am I doing with it?

I'm trying to change the color palette of a sprite's gif in GIMP, but I can't get the bucket tool to put the right color in to each layer.
Here's a screenshot of the gif opened up in GIMP with only the first frame visible.
Next, I selected one of the colors in the frame.
Then, I clicked on the new foreground color and set the blue and green sliders to 0.
Then, I selected the Select By Color tool, and selected the area with the old color.
Last, I used the Bucket Fill tool (making sure that FG color fill and Fill whole selection were chosen on the left) to add the new color, but I got a completely different color in its place.

With every other layer it worked so far... But not with gradients...

New to GIMP and would like to add some color to a line drawing. I have a line drawing that I scanned into the computer as a JPG. I've imported that JPG into GIMP.
the line drawing has a dozen or so areas created by the intersecting lines. I would like to fill the various areas with different colors. How can I do that?
If I pour a color paint on the picture without doing anything, the entire page changes to the color poured. Not what I want to do. I want area A to be red, area B to be blue, and area C to be yellow.
