AutoDesk Smoke :: Can Publish Export Clips With Alpha Channels

I haven't tested every single combination yet in the publish menus. To save me trying them all, is there any option that works to publish all the shots in a sequence together with alpha channel?
I have a sequence of CFXa clips with matte output connected in CFX, I duplicate the sequence and commit cfx... every clip has a matte container. So far, so good. Now I want to output the whole sequence as individual shots with alpha.
Tried the EDL option, changing file type to OpenEXR... no alpha. Tried EDL, changing output type to movie and then selecting ProRes 4444. Alpha was solid black.
Is it possible to get publish to create individual movie files for each shot at all? Everytime I try this it writes one continuous quicktime file even though I select a shot number token. Writing individual shots seems only to work with image sequences, is that the case?

I am experimenting with Smoke 2013 pre-trial and I am having issues with importing images and video with alpha channels.
1. If I have a layered Photoshop file or png with an alpha channel (a still frame lower third), I see that I can import it as a multi layered clip, but what is the best way to have it in the sequence to show up properly?
2. If I have a QuickTime in animation format or Pro Res4444 format with an embedded alpha, how can I import that file to show and cut it on a top layer to animate above my video?

Using Extension 1, I am importing an RGB Uncompressed clip with 8 channels of audio with 7&8 a stereo pair. Only the first 6 come in correctly, the 7th channel has no audio and is not marked as a stereo channel. The 8th channel is not shown at all.
I tested the same clip in Flame 2012 and all 8 channels import correctly.

I was wondering if there was an easy way to view individual color channels (Red, Green, Blue) in the viewer, and if so what the shortcuts are. I know you can do this simply in flame but can't seem to find a way to do it in Smoke.

I'm trying to add a dissolve on the timeline between two clips as I have many times before and one of them will not allow me to dissolve to or from it. It won't allow any dissolves at all actually.
Both are 1920x1080 10bit clips rendered out of action. Any attempts to put a dissolve on the cut ends up with it being only on the end-tag (the second clip). If it tell it to be centered it puts a one frame dissolve on the end-tag. If i tell it Up To Cut it does nothing. From Cut works as expected.

I am having some issues with the newly added Sequence Publish function added in Prerelease 4. I have tried using both the built in AAF export option, and have tried a custom DPX image sequence with EDL export. The function is able to do the final sequence render in preparation for the publish, however it doesn't ever actually publish either the DPX sequence or quicktime movies I request it to. I am left with a folder which contains the edl or aaf file, but no corresponding media ever gets written out. When I check the jobs tab in the mediahub, it just shows "waiting" as its status, but it never progresses past that point. I have tried this function on three different timelines with different media, and it still won't write out the publish sequence. I am able however, to export the sequences to a quicktime as I would normally.

1st issue: I deal with alot of still images. Mostly .png files with embedded alphas. When I import them sometimes they come in able to be put on the timeline and trimmed to any length. Other times Smoke thinks the still image is a clip and it has a set number frames. If I need to extend beyond that set number I have to freeze it. When I import, set the clip options to frames. That works - sometimes. I've tried different formats tga and tiff with no luck. I've also tried the repeat tool but that doesn't repeat the alpha. If I were to use the repeat tool for this, how do repeat both the fill and alpha?
Second Issue: When I put an image on the timeline that is larger or basically any resolution different than the timeline, Smoke automatically puts a resize on it. If I bypass the resize then (depending on the clip resolution) the clip becomes distorted. Is there a way to keep the clip's resolution independent from the timeline?
Third issue: What is Smokes preferred still image format? Today I had a jepg that was 500x350 (or something like that) and after a lot of trial and error I found that it was this relatively small image that was choking my system. After I deleted that file and tried a different file everything seemed to run fine. Is there a certain bit depth or color model etc that I should be using?

Is there any visual tool in smoke so i can view the alpha/matte and rgb at the same time (by overlaying alpha on top of the rgb) ? I can't find a way to do it. Did i miss something ? or does this tool exist ?

I'm running 2012 Advanced.
I have a caption strap as a matte and a fill. Then a matte to wipe the caption on to it.
Now say if I need three of these on the screen at one time and to be able to reposition them individually.
In batch/action I was trying to combine the alpha of the caption and the caption matte, using a matte source node and a blending mode on the top image, but it didn't seem to work. I thought multiply should have done the trick...
I think the thing I'm stuck on is getting the intersection of 2 mattes. So you only see where they are both white.
I did do it with 2 source mattes, kind of in a cascade... but it's a messy solution for such a simple thing.
I ended up combining them out of action using blend and comp node. But then if I needed to resize the strap and 2 mattes independently of the caption itself I ran into problems.

What I don't get is when it says "navigate to the project that contains the clips you want to copy." Does that refer to /usr/discreet/project/<project name>? Because when I navigate to there, I don't see any media to import.

I have a folder of clips that I'd like to unrender then archive so that I just end up archiving the metadata. I can't find a way to do this in Smoke 2013. When I choose archive links only the archive seems to be massive so my guess is it is still archiving rendered shots.

I have got some questions:
1. How can I select many clips on the timeline? (I work with a Wacom tablet.) When I press the pen onto the tablet and move it, I can only pull the gap. In connect fx it works, when I hold cmd.
2. If I set markers in the timeline, is there a way to also see them in connect fx?
3.There is a function in Final Cut: When I I select a clip from the timeline and press "f" , I can go on working on its source clip in the viewer. Is there something similar in smoke? I cannot find the name for this function, so I cannot search for it in the keyboard shortcuts.
4. If I render something, is there a way that Smoke automatically copies the file (without copying the effects)? The reason for that question is: I applied timewarp to a clip, then I wanted to go on working on the clip in connect fx, but the length of the clip changed - it was shorter. When I went on working in action and put some lense flares and rendered it, everything was bended and looked weird. It looked great but I did not intend to do something like this.
The next questions are no real questions but rather problems.
5. When I work with audio (audio clip locked), I cannot really cut on the music, because 5a. sometimes the amplitudes do not match the music. An example: There is no amplitude, but the music goes on for 2 seconds. 5b. And when it is correct and I cut on the beat and render it, it is not sync anymore some moments later or when I restart smoke. (It only displaces 1 or 2 seconds from the sync.)
6. Since I have updated from pre-release 4 to pre-release 5, I cannot export anymore. I have read a lot on blogs, but I could not really find my problem. I cannot even press the export button.

I was wondering if when I stop a looping clip playing in my timeline, I could have it stop at the frame I stop on instead of stopping at the positioner or in-point. This is a very vital problem I'm having.
I have come up with a work-a-round but it doesn't work near as smoothly as I would like it to.
All I do for the workaround is instead of hitting space when I stop, I hit right alt to set an in point then hit space to stop and "A" to move to my newly created in-point. But it doesn't work as smoothly as it should. I would really like it to perform like playing a clip in the desktop works. It just loops around and when I stop, it actually stops.

is it hard for Autodesk to have/create fully RGBA clips (clips with embedded alpha).I'm not so sure what's the main advantage to have clip with separate matte (black & white), since all compositing software even FCP can handle it.
I found that this function a bit outdated n you end up doing lot of steps even to accomplish simple result.

I unarchived a 2013 Linux sequence.
I took all of the clips an unlinked them in 2013 Mac.
I then gathered the source material on to a new USB portable drive. I then went through a conform and relinked all fo the clips that aren't in a CFX.
I can't see how to relink or get the clips inside the CFX show up.
I dragged the clips from the Sources folder, and collected them into a new folder in my Media Library.
If I collect those "checkerboard" clips into a new sequence and look at it via the Conform tab, it shows that the clips are Linked, as parts of them were also in the main timeline.

Is there an equivalent command to the FCP alt up/down arrow to move a clip up and down between tracks? I can drag but it doesn't snap to the anything ie where the clip originally was on another track.

How is the best way to keep sync with clips that have audio. In Premiere for example, when a clip contains audio it handles both video and audio as a single thing until I explicitly unlink them. But in Smoke, even with the option Select linked, which as far as I can tell it only works for selecting and activate that little arrow (do not remember the name of the function) in the tracks table, keeps all ok but only on that track.
This is the normal operation of Smoke? He really will always treat the audio and video of same clip as separate things? Am I missing something? Because at least for me, that's came from Premiere, always be remembering to set all the tracks and always go to the menu and select Enable linked is what most complicates the editorial work in Smoke.

I'm trying to create CFX clip with alpha so that i can place it over another clip in timeline. CFX clip is build from source and then i generated mask with gMask node and brought together with Blend&Comp node. I created CFX clip from Blend&Comp node. There is option in CFX clip settings Generate Alpha, but it is greyed out. Does some one know why is this so or how can i achieve same result with CXF output?

Whenever we try to import video clips they show up as all black. The length of the video is there, so it might be 15 minutes of black. But no matter what video (Sony, Red, etc.) it's all the same.
We're running pre-release 3 on the latest iMac. As far as we know the graphics card is compatible.

It's not a show stopper but if you select more than one clip on the thumbnail desktop and pen copy they don't copy to where you place them but jump to be half hidden off the source area.

I imported a Final Cut sequence via XML into Smoke. The media is 1080p25 ProRes 422 HQ and is located on our SAN. I need to do some green screen work. I have two clips and an Axis effect on the upper clip.
Adjusting the keyer and scrubbing that segment of the timeline is painfully slow so I want to copy just the two clips I am working on, to the local storage.
Is there a way to do this directly from the timeline? I only want what's in the timeline. Not the whole length of the original media.

I'm coming from a Symphony and FCP background. I do a lot of keying in the timeline when I'm finishing, so I'm often moving the green screen clip from track 1 to 2 and then putting the BG on the lower track. I'm used to being able to constrain the movement of the clip so that it doesn't slide around on the timeline and get out of sync when I move it. Does smoke have a hotkey for this? I've noticed if I hold shift, I get some indication of where Smoke is lining up the clip relative to other clips by some highlighting, but this does not constrain the clip I'm moving.
