AutoCad :: Hyperlinking To Separate Drawings
Jan 3, 2014
I have an assembly drawing, and in the assembly drawing I have a list of parts, with each part containing information in the relevant columns. Now I would like to add a new column with a link symbol, that should you click on it, opens the separate part drawing.
This would make my life a lot easier as then people can just click and find the drawing instead of asking me the whole time to go through the long winded process of locating it on the server!

Currently when I open up multiple drawings (opening them up one at a time) they all appear in the same window (one instance) of AutoCAD.
I want each drawing to open in separate instances so I can view them on separate monitors (and close one without being asked to close them all).
I have tried changing the SDI system variable from 0 and 1 (and vise-versa)
I have tried changing the windows default program from AutoCAD Application to AutoCAD Launcher (and vise-versa)
I have set the TASKBAR system variable at both 0 and 1 (and vise-versa)

I have 10 separate drawing files that I want to combine into one drawing and I want each drawing to be on a separate layout.I want to end up with one drawing with 10 layout tabs each containing the graphics from one drawing. Each drawing has one layout with the graphics on it.No fancy paper space / model space stuff. No viewport scaling.
I thought this could be done via Design Center but I've never used that.

I have about 1500 .tif files that I need to attach to drawings. Is it possible to write a script or macro of some sort that will automate this process?
I know how to insert them manually in raster design, but the number of files would be very time consuming. I am using AutoCAD 2009.

Is it possible to have the production tool for cross sections create separate sheet drawings, rather than creating multiple sheet layouts in one drawing?

I had a thought of creating a DWT template containing a bunch of hyperlinks to our job/model directory. The philosophy is that you would start your ACAD session and be presented with a series of links (prepared in the DWT) to various job/drawing directories and models. This would make it easy for the use to simply boot up ACAD, and then they are only 1 or 2 clicks away from accessing their job DWG.
For the most part, setting this up has been pretty easy. But I have a few questions as to ways to smooth out the process even further.
1. Is it possible to remove/disable the hyperlink 'open warning' message when trying to access a DWG via a hyperlink?
2. Is it possible to enable single click access to hyperlinks? This template/launcher DWT will be the only drawing in our office to utilise hyrperlinks, and I would like not to need the CTRL+CLICK to access the linked files/folders. This is of course not a huge issue, but I am curious about it.
3. Is it possible to have a text/attribute tag (containing a FIELD) within a BLOCK to display the path/file name of the hyperlink of the BLOCK. ie. the BLOCK will have the hyperlink, rather than the text within the block being linked. I hope that is clear.I will probably have a few more questions as I progress with this project.

This just started happening after I downloaded DWG TruViewer. I am working on LT 2008 using Fusionware on a MacPro. I needed the viewer to convert newer drawings from an architect. Now, when I double click on a drawing in Explorer a separate AutoCad window opens for each drawing I need open. I prefer to just go up to Window>and click on the one I need at that time, especially if I have several to switch between because it is easier to see the file name I want.
SDI is set to 0
Taskbar is set to 0
Relaunched the program
I can't open files using File>Open because the program crashed each time and Autodesk is not issuing anymore fixes for 2008. (Yes, we should upgrade but there is no money budgeted)
Right-click on any .dwg file and go to Properties>General>Change> and select the AutoCad LT launcher as the preferred program
Since I am in Window 7 instead of XP the File Types tab has been removed from Folder Options so I can't fix it that way.
So, why did this change? FYI that stupid TruViewer made lots of unnecessay changes to my AutoCad and Explorer programs that I am still trying to sort out like changing the file icon and hiding the file extensions. Are they trying to make it hard to find files or what?
And next, how can I reset the default so that double clicking on a .dwg in Explorer opens in already open AutoCad window?

I am attempting to hyperlink from my CorelDraw file to a separate PDF. I want the link to work when I export my CorelDraw page to pdf, and I would like to be able to hyperlink to a different pdf file. A quick google search turned up a file:\ syntax to lead with in the hyperlink but I'm having trouble getting it to work.

I'm using ACAD LT 2008.
When i try to copy paste some drawing entities from a heavy drawing file to any other file, the program blocks and says 'not responding', endlessly. So i always have to shutdown the program. I experience the same problem using the designcenter: when I try to copy a layout into another drawing, my computer gets stuck.
Another annoying problem with these files is that they are so heavy, while in fact they shouldn't be. I tried the aectoacad file command. In result the file id half as big, but after I open it and save it, again is the original size.

Every now and then I go back and try to use publish to speed up printing but I always go back to plotting one by one.
I work in a housing construction office and I have 10 separate drawings side by side in model space for house plans that I need plot separate to give to certain people. My problem isn't that I can't publish them separately its that I can't save them over existing pdf's individually predetermined.
Q1. do i just have to go through and change every layout name before or after i publish?
Q2. how do i change the output publish location?
Q3. can each layout be saved to a different existing pdf and remember it?
Q3. can i save these setting across to a new drawing?

I'm trying to hatch the attached drawing (extracted from the actual drawing) with two separate hatches,
Now the quickest way is to hatch both areas with the same hatch and then use the properties painter, on each separate hatch, Unfortunately it's not hatching the areas separately.

Normally you can do this with hatchedit -> options -> create separate hatches.
also "HPSEPARATE" on the command.
How can I separate the already drawn hatches in a drawing with vba?
I can't find such a method.

I am very new to AutoCAD (1 day of playing around).
My company is an independant environmental consultancy company that uses GIS (QGIS/shapefiles/.dxf is compatable) to create maps etc. We are generally sent AutoCAD .dwg or .dxf from out clients for the technical drawings of their projects. I have a few questions:
The files I am sent are not georeferenced, no background map, no connection with the real world, is there a better way to georeference these drawings than the "Set Location" tab (this is a good tool if I could set the location before I begin, but it only has 1 point of reference and when the client sends a road alignment, for example, the single point of reference does not allow me to keep consistent scale/orientation etc?If the client sends a drawing with many layers (bore holes/road/solar panals/site office/power lines) how do I seperate these layers from one another and export them as individual .dxf for use in our GIS and mapping programs?

What is the advantage of creating a seperate corridor for an intersection? Doing so requires leaving gaps in the road corridors at the intersections which creates a mess in the surface triangulation through the gap. I know we can clean it up by creating a composite surface and pasting all the pieces together but how tediious that is!
I was wanting to keep the intersections as seperate corridors because if we add them to the road corridor we end up with numerous duplicate baselines which makes editing and data management a nightmare. This whole process is a huge time consumer. I can't understand how Autodesk expects DOT's to adopt this software with this workflow.

We need to be able to print each sheet to it's own PDF (preferably automatically naming the pdf in the process). I can't seem to find a way to do it in Inventor itself or the Task Scheduler. I imagine it's something that needs to be present in the PDF driver, but CutePDF and Acrobat Printer don't seem to have that option. Is there one that does?
Surprisingly, AutoCAD and Revit BOTH have this ability. Inventor seems to be the only Autodesk packaging lacking the ability.

I'm working in Magi-cad, and have received a file from a colleague that has quit the office... Somehow he seems to have been able to switch the line-color within the same system and layer without using the normal line color / layer interface. So I was wondering if there are any other ways to separate color in the same layer and system?

I have a leader that I do NOT want to explode with text at the end of it. Problem is, I need the leader part to be on a layer with a certian line type and a certain layer and I need the text on a different layer. How is this possible!? Also, I have AutoCad LT if that makes a difference (no express tools for example).
...Maybe some way to create a new text style that is linked to a certain layer since that is the only option in the props for the leader that seems like it would control that...?

I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to separate a Polyface Mesh at a particular point. I would like to use the SLICE command but it's not working. I tried SUBTRACT on the solid but no can do either. Is there a way to do this?
I have a huge structural floorplan, and I want to divide it up into sections so when XREF'ed in my drawing I can load it in piece by piece, saving a huge performance hit.

I'm thinking of creating separate corridors for my stripping calculations and then using the stripping datum surface as my main EG surface for a more accurate Cut/Fill quantity. In this instance I have 10 corridors for my primary roads, and adding another 10 corridors for the stripping seems like a lot of effort, but it's probably necessary.

I have 400 files each represent a tile of contour at 0.5m interval, if I xref all into one dwg it is extremely slow. These files have some 3d blocks which represent xyz and I made a .net program to open each file with "readdwgfile" method. However turned out that the points are not dense enough to generate the same accuracy contours as the 0.5m contours.
I am going home now to use my home computer and see if it can handle all these files xrefed and then bind and explode.
Worst case in make another program to extract only the contours and insert into a blank database. Always difficult when not given raw lidar point files.
Total size for these contour files combined is 327mb.
We have microstation capabilities not sure if it can put in the file in an easier way. I can work with the xrefed bogged down file. But is there a way to only export what's shown ? I have frozen the layers for all other objects from all the references.
I estimated total points from contours will be 20 million. Since each generate about 50000 points. Which is still workable. The computer i use in the office just make this more difficult. Slow cpu. Difficult day. Spent 7 hours programming and got it figured out but didn't solve the problem. I should have known better 20 points are not enough to generate that look in the 0.5m contours.

What I am trying to do is line snapping over 2 stetches.
I am working in 2D sketch mod, I am basically drawing square boxes on one sketch (in black) and then on another sketch (in orange) drawing connecting lines.
Right now I am having to maually look to see the distance, but is there any way to line snap over 2 sketches?
On a side note, When a drawing is finished, is there any way to scale it up or down?
