AutoCad :: Build / Download Linetype That Can Display As Thick Dashed Line Surrounded By 2 Parallel Lines
Dec 4, 2009
Any way to build or download a linetype that can display as a thick dashed line surrounded by 2 parallel lines on either side of it?
We use them to denote underground stormwater pipes in our survey models.
Currently I need to manually set each line to a polyline, give it a global width, and then draw a DLINE of the same width from endpoint to endpoint. The down side is that not only is it laborious, I also have to set the Z values to zero, so we lose the elevation feature of the pipe in the model.
Ideally it would need to have enough functionality to alter the spacing of the dashes, and the width of the line.

When building an annotation template, in the block editor (annotation editor etc..); how do you take the length of a 2D line or pline to be the display of my template?
Doing a water system map and it would be nice to have a line length with the ' symbol at the end rounded to the nearest foot on each length of pipe.

if I have two lines which run roughly paralel, but sometimes vary in the distance between them, is there a quick method of having CAD draw a line which is central to the two?
Basically, like an offset, but it would need to offset the line at a distance that is central to the two lines, as and where it varies. IE, you couldnt choose 'offset' and then choose 'mid between two points' because the distance between the lines varies at points..

I am drawing a diagram to describe a mathematical word problem. Since it is easier to visualize with a drawing, I want to draw it using the given dimensions. But angles used in the diagram are unknown and are not needed for the answer to be calculated, so the only way to draw this freehand is to guess at the angle resulting in the correct distances to be off.
Here is the word problem: There are two ladders, one 40 feet and the other 30 feet, each touching the base of one of two buildings and leaning against the other building. If the ladders cross 10 feet above the ground, how far apart are the buildings?
So for my drawing, being rather simple considering what AutoCAD can do, results in this:
Can AutoCAD calculate the angle needed to place a line of a given length between two parallel lines that are a distance apart less than the length of the line to place between them, having the endpoints of this line touching the parallel lines, fitting exactly?
For the word problem, the distance between the two parallel lines is what needs to be solved and the math is quite invloved, having to find the roots or solution of a quartic equation. (I have the solution figured out to be 26.03287754 feet)
What I am afraid of is that this would require to program an AutoLISP routine to create a new command that one can call from the command line. I see it using the the measure command with relative and absolute co-ordinates. This may be far from a "beginner" question. I can do this quite easily on a peice of paper: having two parallel lines drawn, take a ruler and placing the "0" mark on one line, then adjusting the angle until the desired length just reaches the opposite parallel line. I used to use this trick quite often when drafting with pencil and paper to divide a distance into a required number of even amounts, so this can't be that difficult to do with AutoCAD!

I have drawn a site plan in model space at 1to1 scale. I try to draw hidden lines to show demolition. In paper space the scale is set to 1"=50" to fit on paper. But all the hidden lines plot solid. I had changed LTSCALE, PSLTSCALE, to 1. This problem keeps happening in most every thing I draw.

I must be missing something fundamental when trying to change a line from a solid line to a hidden or dashed line in Autocad 2000. I use the ltype command then load either Hidden, or dashed ISO,or both, and invariably the scale is way off in that I always end up with a still solid line, after using modify properties. After all that, every line I draw after that comes out dashed. Maybe I should fool with the layers? Is there a basic procedure I should follow here?

I am using Xara's Photo & Graphic Designer for the first time and slowly getting acclimated to the program after using Ulead's Photo Impact for 6 years.
Just one really basic question. I have three elements in my final design: two seperate lines of text surrounded by a black outline. To save this as a single graphic (.gif format), what do I need to do? With Ulead all I had to do was select all, right click and select merge as one, then simply save in whatever format I wanted to the destination of my choosing.
Is there a similar "merge as one" command in Xara or do I select each element in my graphic, then choose save from the file menu?

In this particular exercise I was using only lines with modified thickness and 3DFACE once for the bottom.
1. Is it possible to cut the holes in the walls? If yes, how?
2. How to get rid of those annoying red lines (here they are the same as X and Y positive semi-axis)?
3. Where can I find 3DFACE and similar tools using UI? (AutoCAD 2012)

When I make a selection in a picture, the selection dotted line shows a coloured border, which is the colour of the second choice in the Materials palette. Especially if I make an addition to the selection, this coloured line runs right through the selected figure. If I copy the selection, undo the selection and then paste as a new layer, the coloured border, especially in added areas, remains visible.
how I can get rid of this strange artifact? I didn't use to have it, it emerged a few days ago.

I need to transform a lot of dashed (single) lines into separate lines... Who can tell me how to do this in a few clicks. I don't need an outline of the dashed line. So the black dashes I need, the white in between the dashes I want to loose.
See the example. I need the second lines.

I am new to AutoCAD and have been sent a 3D architectural model. I need to find the dimensions of some beams. The measure tool seems only to measure from point to point, and I need to measure from one side (or edge) of the beam to the other. The beams are not along the axes and the ends are not at right angles so there are no points that correspond to the height and width.
In Sketchup, I can easily measure from one line to any parallel line. How can I do this in AutoCAD?

Drawing Parrallel lines from one elipse to another?
I am drawing pipe and beams.

I'm trying to draw a line that is parallel to the one I've already drawn. It works fine (Osnap on) when I draw a whole new line and then draw a parallel line. But when I try to add a parallel extension to an old line, it doesn't work. The old line is located in another layer, but I tried to copy it to the same layer and it still doesn't work.

I have placed my assembly onto the idw and the line weight is set up correct for the majority of the drawing, but the small details, line less than 1mm together still carry the same line weight as the rest of the drawing. They are coming out far too thick as one big fat line.
Is there a way (Automatically, not RHM change layer) to select lines that are close together to move to a different layer that has a different line weight? I dont really want to go around selecting every line close together and changing the layer or weight do I?

We use a specific program for our line of work (KCL) in which the blocks of equipment we bring into autocad dashed lines only show up with an LTS scale of 10. By doing this I can never get our regular dashed or hidden lines to show up at that scale so I have to adjust the properties of each line to .025 or something like that for it to read. Is there something globally to change to make this work better?
Also, does PSLTSCALE have anything to do with it? What should this be set to?

I've been customizing acad.lin like a maniac for the last couple of days and there's a recurring problem that I can't resolve by myself.I have this line...
*EX-DASH,[G] Existing - - EX - - - - EX - - - - EX - -
A,.125,-.0625,0.127,-.254,["EX",STANDARD,S=.127,U=0,X=-.127,Y=-.0635],-.2,.125,-.0625,.125,-.0625
The result is similar to...
- - EX - - - - EX - - - - EX - - - - EX - - - - EX - - - - EX - -
Let's say that the pattern of the line ("- - EX - -", because that's the part that's being repeated) takes 50 units to display at a given scale. I draw a PLINE and one section of the line is like 75 units long. If the line I'm drawing can't contain the pattern of my custom line, it won't display correctly. Given these numbers, the pattern would only display right once (75 / 50 = 1.5).
I get that and it's ok. HOWEVER, one thing I don't get is why autocad displays the pattern once and then fill the rest with a continuous line. It's okay for all my continuous custom lines with text because it keeps the same base line and it feels transparent (and it's also the reason I never realized it was reacting this way until I started working with dashed lines).
Example: I want to display "- - EX - - - - EX - -" but would only have space for "- - EX - - - - E". Acad will display "- - EX - -" once + continuous line for the remaining space.
I know that if there's no space to fit a second "EX" it can't be displayed, and that's all right, but how come it doesn't fill the rest of my line with dashes instead of a continuous line? With PLINEs, every time I turn a corner, I get this continuous line segment on each corner before it starts displaying the dashes (because I can't always draw lines that fits perfectly the pattern).
How to force it to display dashes when there's not enough space to repeat the pattern one last time?

I am trying to plot a drawing, Visual style: wireframe, occluded edges: dashed. The drawing has millimeters as the unit of measurement. I have tried this (taken from a website some of you might be familiar with):

but it does not work. I set the ltscale as low as 0.01 but without result. I tried printing from "model" and "Layout" (everything is set at Wireframe and dashed occluded edges).
I have finished the drawings and documentation and this is holding me back from printing and sending what I have done.
