AutoCAD Inventor :: Creating A Pattern For Plasma Cutter / Spline Point Movement?
May 7, 2012
While tracing a tree image using splines for a school project i have run into some problems...I am creating a pattern for a plasma cutter.
When i move the points of my spline sometimes it causes the whole spline to randomly move around and twist and turn where there are no points. Also sometimes when i open the drawing some of the spline lines are out of place while the spline points have not moved.I have tried to constrain all the points but it turned into a mess. How can i stop this from happening?

If my memory serves correctly CATIA used to have a feature pattern type that allowed for the selection of two sketches (or something along these lines, my memory is fuzzy). One sketch contained the feature profile, and the other contained points where you wanted the patterned features to plop out at. Is there any similar function in IV?
In case there's another way to accomplish what I'm trying to do, I'm drawing a piece of roll formed sheetmetal with a crap load of slots with non-uniform spacing. I would really prefer to not have to create a sketch and draw all these slots. Especially when there's not even a legitimate slot command. I could probably draw one and then copy it around a bunch of times,

I'm trying to create an external involute spline (ANSI B92.2M) Fillet Root Side Fit 26.9mm x 1 mm x 26 teeth x 38 mm long using the spline generator with Inventor 2012. I created a test shaft"M-182-AMA.ipt" that is Ø26.9 mm x 38 mm long with 1 mm radius on each end of shaft.
I use the following steps:
1. After creating component "M-182-AMA.ipt" I select Design tab>>Power Transmission>>Involute Spline.
2. A window appears that has the caption "Involute Splines Connection Generator".In the Dimensions section I choose "Splines Type: ANSI B92.2M - 37.5 deg, Fillet Root, Side Fit, 26 x 1.00 x 38 x 5H/5h" and change the Length to 38 mm.
3. In the Shaft Groove section I use Create new, and I push the Reference 1 button that turns blue, I then select the od feature from the model and I get an error(see attached pic "error1.jpg).
I changed the 26.9mm od to be 27mm and it still gave me the error.

I'm created the parts successfully with no error, but when I try to create a flatten view it kept giving me error. I notice that some people try to use chamfer to resolve this issue but I tried with no luck. Also, I play around with the gap size and still get the error. How to create the flat view for me so I could learn how to do it.

I have a model of a plywood seat "blank" which I have trimmed by way of an extrusion cut to give the plywood seat its shape. Basically I'll use my modeled shape to CNC rout the shape into the actual blank. However, before I tie up a CNC to make my 1st part I want to create a flat pattern which I will lay on the actual plywood blank and cut it out by hand to see if the shape aesthetically works. I am trying to unfold/ unroll/ flat pattern the shape in inventor (as a sheet metal part) so I can plot it but am not able to do so successfully (fails). Is the shape to complex? I have attached an image of the blank, an image of the finished shape desired and the .ipt. I'm not an expert at sheet metal but I have successfully done this sort of thing before making flat patterns of transition cones etc so I do think I am following the correct procedure but this part is far more complex that I am used to. Also, the model of the "blank" was imported as an iges from my supplier before I made it a thickened surface so I'm afraid inventor doesn't "historically know" how it was created and therefore cannot flatten it.

Is there a way to unfold a coil shape to get the flat pattern? When I try to unfold the attached part I get an error message (see attached error_msg.jpg). We have been using AutoPOL to unfold these kind of shapes (which works fine). But since we have a very old version which we really need to upgrade, I was wondering if nowadays Inventor could handle coil unfolds.
If this will not work with the current IV2013 release, will this then be implemented in a future release? Are there any alternatives or should I just go for the AutoPOL upgrade?

Spline curve command has changed. This is terrible as I used to use simple line types to show different things on my drawings that was rapid fast with custom macros etc. Now the spline curve command does not work in same way costing me hours of time wasted. I have now resorted in saving all incoming drawings to older version and completing my drawings that way. Only problem is the new drawings are growing above the capabilities of my old machine.
How can I initiate the old std 2 point spline curve in the new software so it works the same way as old version?

Let's say that I'm making a simple L bracket. I'm going to form it, and machine the holes in both ends *after* forming. So I don't want the holes to show in my flat pattern.
On the few threads I found, the consensus seemed to be that you may have to have the part file contain no holes and put them in as assembly. So I just accepted this that it must not be able to be done.
Then I ran across a piece of promo literature online from AutoDesk that made mention of the ability to create "postform" features that obviously are created after the forming process.

I'm working on a little trackless train at the moment. I have a working model of the train going around a curve, but I cheated a bit, by constraining the center points of the axles to the curve, and then had the wheels angles based off the drawbar angles.
I have began working on a more accurate version, where the angled wheels are what drives the carts around the curve. Long story short, if you have a thin playing card in Inventor, how can you restrict motion in the normal direction, allowing the card only to translate tangentially no matter how it is orientated in the model space?
Constraints are all based on relationships between two parts. Is there such a thing as restricting a part's movement in certain directions? The reason I ask, is I would like the wheels to follow the direction they are oriented (not being dragged in a normal direction, something resembling slip motion).
Essentially, I would like to do this without using contact friction between the ground and the wheel (which is what actually makes the wheel follow the direction of its orientation in real life).

I have one problem and I would like to get your opinion how I could solve this.
I can't share models I have problem with, but I made another with the same problem.
I have two parts - one with slot, another with "pin". How to constrain the "pin" to always move in slot?
I had some ideas but non of them worked for me:
1. Use the Transitional constrain came first in mind, but it gives unsuspected results in this situation. Pin part is jumping around and ends up contrained in another place ir should be.
2. Contact solver kind of do the job, but it works quite bad. I gives no control or accuracy (i can not control how much pin is moved out)
3. I even thought of point on 3d sketch constrain, but it can not be done
How you would suggest to constrain the movement? I hope I stated problem clear enough.
I attached model files. I use Inventor 2013

I am have a model of a scoop that I would like to animate to show motion and check for interference and clearance.I was told by a friend the best way to create and assembly is to create it as it would be built.
Doing this, I created the cylinders and added to them to the main assembly as an assembly, but I am having trouble controlling movement. I checked off flexible for each cylinder but using the mouse to try and position the scoop bucket and front frame is undesirable. I know I could apply mate constraints to check for clearances and movements, But seeing the scoop move in a regulated motion would be need. Could possibly be used for marketing purposes as well.
Is using dynamic simulation or studio better? I have heard good things about the Wasim Younis Series - book
Does his books get into how a model should be assembled/created before trying simulations? The boom moves off yellow cylinder and the bucket moves off the red cylinderA 4 way joystick controls this movement (hydraulically), is it possible to simulate a joystick to control this animation?
The blue cylinder is controlled by a 2 way valve, that steers the front frame.I know uploading a model is the best way to get fast accurate solutions, however this model is currently over 200 parts, so I figured a .DWF export was the easiest way to give you a visual representation.

In an assembly we can set driven constraints to drive parts etc.. or we can set the contact solver to show contacts.
Is it possible to set something like a driven constraint but so it is flexible between the set parameters?
when creating designs i like to move stuff around with the mouse to see how it works and the potential problems that might arise etc.. however i would like to still move stuff around with the mouse but restrict the movements with constraints.
so if you have a hingy flappy thing, the constraints would be set so it can rotate round the hinge as required but also an angular constraint could be set do it would work between set angles, say 0 to 50 degrees and if it gets to the limit it stops?
Is this possible, I think it would be very useful?

Why is it that when you create the first constraint between any two components, the secondary component moves not only to satisfy the constraint, but also in ways that have nothing to do with the constraint. This is not occasional behavior, it happens every time.
I always have to stop and move the secondary component back out of the way to get to the other features I need to reference to continue.

I have a stress analysis result that doesn't make sense to me. I have a flat plate, that is loaded with 100psi equally throughout the surface. I have an array of bolt holes that are 120mm x 109mm spacing. When I do the simulation and look at deflection, I see more movement on the ends. I expected the movement to be consistent eveywhere?
Is this an Inventor issue, or are my expectations in error?
On a side bar, is there a better way to constrain holes than on their edges? I would think that would give errors on the stress levels due to the point (line) contact.
