AutoCAD Inventor :: Split Solid Using Surface As Shown
Aug 4, 2012
I use INV 2013. MOVE THE END OF THE PART DOWN TO SEE WHATS HAPPENING. (MOVED TO REDUCE THE FILE SIZE). I am trying to split the solid using the surface as shown.
But, I am unable to do so. Also, I need to create a new surface with 0.50mm offset to create female form die.How to do it.

I'm trying to split a single solid body into 2 solid bodies. The problem is that the body I'm trying to split consists of two separate pieces. I can split a body when it is a single piece no problem, but I'm having the problem when the two pieces are not joined at all.
When I try and split it on the origin plane it gives this error:
"Creating parting line failed. Could not build this Split"
When I try and split it on a work plane lying on one of the pieces it gives this error:
"Creating parting line failed. Modeling failure in ASM. Redefine inputs."
Or, another variation on this erorr:
"Creating parting line failed. Split feature could not create two bodies. Change the Split Tool so that split feature can create two bodies."

I have been working for an hour trying to add this split to this part. I have an extruded surface (ExtrusionSrf10) that I need to use as the parting line. When I try this all I get is a "Create parting line failed.....Errors occurred during update".
I have done this many times on other parts, this one is being a pain. I need the split to have two solids when its done. The reason that I want this is so I can sculpt out a portion of this block.
The file is about 15mb. Here is a link to it.

I do have a problem on SPLIT feature. I cannot seem to apply SPLIT SOLID into an entity/object but, on the other object I am able to apply SPLIT SOLID.
Sketch created using MultiBody and would like to make use of "Make Components" to create an assembly as well as parts.
I have attach a zip file of the ipt. I am currently using Autodesk Inventor Suite 2012.

I have a solid body but I need to make a part of it removable. I want to be able to lift it off and put it back on. The problem is that at the moment it is all one piece. So what I need to know how to do is remove just this one face from my solid, turn it into a seperate part so that I can create a lip on the solid for it to set on once it is reasymboled.

I have a part which I am using the Split tool to make two solid parts. All was fine until a few days later when I went back and made some changes to the surface I was using for the Split. Now, Inventor has flipped the two solid bodies, so later features I had placed now don't work.

if i draw up a 3d sold part as the finished part, can i then draw a new rectangle solid body over the top of this and split the new solid body using the part as the split tool?
the idea being that i am left with a rectangular plate with a female 3d impression of the finished part in the top.I can't seem to use the part as a split tool?

Attached is a surface model with parameters which drives an assembly I have. I was testing it by changing dimensions to see where failures in the main assembly occured. It worked for a few changes so I saved it and checked it into vault.
The Split using the 70 Deg Plane (you will find them in the browser, Split 5 and Split 7) is where the problem occurs. When I increase the outside diameter (i made it 147 in.), Spits 5 and 7 get moved up to the top half.
The same surface (named OUTER HOUSING SIDE) and its mirror are split on the XZ plane prior to the splits in question (5 and 7).

We received a surface model from a vendor that I have patched up as best I can, it still has one hole that I can find that I haven't been able to fill. Ideally we would like to have a solid model, but I'm running out of time to get this done and the surface model we have would be good enough for our purposes IF I can get the yellow surface tangent lines to turn off or change their color to black.
I've attached a jpg of the surface model with the yellow lines and uploaded the model here: [URL].....

I have a scanned model of a casting. It was necessary to delete surfaces to remove the casting flash from the model.
I have lofted/patched/stitched the missing surfaces to close the solid. Apparently there is a gap somewhere because the model remains as a surface instead of returning to a solid.
How can missing surfaces be found in the model?
What else can prevent the model from returning to a solid?
When stitching, the gap tolerance was set to .002". The model will "rebuild" without any error messages.

I am working on a project and have ran into a problem. I need to hollow out a currently solid surface in order for it to have a uniform thickness of 3mm that follows the curvature of opposite side. These pictures will show what I mean.
Top Side:
Bottom Side:
Basically, I need to hollow out the backside to make it fit the surface of the front side with a thickness of 3mm. Is there some sort of tool that is designed for this or another way of doing it?

I was given a STEP file that was created in Solidwoks which when opened in Inventor 12' is a surface.
The surface can be successfully thickened after it is stitched, prior to stitching it fails due to it's complex obround, tapered, bell shape. However, because thicken only thickens perpendicular to the surface I end up with a lot of unusable ends with crazy angles and in many cases additional phantom surfaces which I cannot cut off or sketch on because they don’t really exist. Thickening has not been a serviceable option to this point.
All other techniques I try when making this model from scratch fail or do not match the original surface. Measuring the surface is difficult because the only measurements we get are the lengths of the loops, no radial measurements. Additionally, when I enter the solid I created from scratch into an assembly (whether it’s geometrically correct or not), I cannot constrain it, I can’t click on anything but the working planes – no surface, face or edge can be picked on the solid itself.
Making surfaces into workable solids? Is there anything I should do different? Is the sequence I am using incorrect? Correct order of operations they use to successfully create a solid from a surface?

Any program to convert 3D solids to a mid plane surfaces? We need our models in this form to do FEA work on them. I wanted to ask this question before I took on the task of trying to create one myself.

I have a multibody surface part, which is derived from a multibody part. Therefor there are multiple contiguous surface parts that are isolated from each other.
Is there a way to STITCH or convert one of these contiguous surfaces into a solid part ?
Note: I tried the THICKEN tool but the hole features do not come out right. Some holes are missing or the hole depths are wrong.

I have finally created the shell of the complex surface that you see. This is only a section of the part because I cannot show the whole thing for proprietary reasons. I formed solid surfaces using the network command. The propblem is that it will not convert to a solid because the surface seams are not "water tight." When the network command created the solid surfaces, the surface seams do not exactly match the lines so there are gaps in all the seams. I have tried blending, patching, etc. and nothing works. how to convert this to a solid without losing the outlines and the shape?

I am trying to find a way to import a laser scanned mesh or point cloud file into Inventor (2013) such that I can use it to make a parametric representation of the form. The import format can be STL, OBJ, VRML, XYZ or PLY. I have tried the Mesh Enabler from Autodesk Labs but the files I am looking to work-on are bigger than the enabler can cope with and my system slows right down or locks-up.
I know bespoke reverse engineering software is the ideal way to go but I was hoping there was a way to model over a mesh to represent its form to create a placeholder in a parametric assembly. I'm not looking for accuracy, just a surface or solid output that can be constrained to native inventor parts. If I could get the files to STEP or IGES someway that would be enough.

I drew a solid model of a structure in Autocad 2010. By using that model, I want to make a FEM analysis in Sap2000. The problem is that Sap2000 takes only polygon meshes (not solids) in 3d. The question is that how can i make a group of polygon meshes of the solid model that represents the structure.
(Since i am not an expert of Autocad, i will be glad if the solution is explained in a simple language.)

I do a lot of visualization work I need a corridor top surface split by material FAST. before I used Corridor Solids but I don't have the extension in 2013. So I export to CivilView, so far so good, then attempt to roundtrip the mesh back in Civil3D and that is where things fall apart.
Export to DWG is not split by material
Export to 3DS results in a blank screen
Export to FBX comes in missing large chunks of mesh out of scale and in the wrong location

My problem today is that I made a Model of a Part of a ship using surfaces rather than solids because the engineer thought it would be easier to bring into ANSYS program for analysis but he is now having a problem with it and I am looking into converting my current model to solid. I can do it but the method I thought of using is quite long winded and we are working to a tight deadline.
1.open up the surface part
2.use "Offset/Thicken"
3.any clashes between parts make a sketch and cut away.
the problem is the amount of plates I have and the time it takes to sort them out.

Im creating a Profile Bandset and would like to have multiple surface/profile elevations shown, ie: EG, FG, Back of Curb and Back of walk. While creating this bandset I see that the text component editor properties only has code for profile 1 elevation and profile 2 elevation in the properties area, which the code for this looks like below.
<[Profile1 Elevation(Uft|P2|RN|Sn|OF|AP)]>
<[Profile2 Elevation(Uft|P3|RN|AP|Sn|OF)]>
Ive tried to write my own code using the profile 2 as an example but it doesnt seem to work as a 3rd surface/profile and only seems to mimic the profile 2 elevation when placed in the band
My questions are as follows
1) does Civil 3d only allow 2 surface elevations in any band set? if it does allow more profiles/surface elevations what am i missing to create it?
2) if Civil 3d does alow for multiple surfaces to be shown in the band set how do i get the text component editor to supply the extra profile elevation codes? or would i need to create from scratch
3) if i need to write the code from scratch does any listing of the codes and meanings of each code ie what does RN, Uft, Sn and so forth do and mean .

Attached are survey points that created the surface of a road embankment portion that caved-in. The road is very near a reservoir shoreline.
1. How can a surface profile be produce? I/'ve use line to change it into an alignement and then create a proile , then a profile view. But the the surface profile is missing.
2.the points having higher elevation are the top edge( road level) of the cave-n . A few few shots were take before the shorline elevations.
3. What the best way to come up with the rock volume to fill the cave-in given this surveying points., Also the shoreline elevation will be lowered some more while work is being done since the fill is not allowed to fall in the reservoir.

I have created a model, by lofting a shape along a curved spline path. The model properties is currently '3d Solid' what I want to do is generate a 3d Face off of this model.
I have exploded the 3d model and that gives me a surface, bu the dilemma is that I do not know how to 'trace' or turn this surface into a 3d face format. What I was thinking is that if the surface could be exploded into individual elements I would be able to draw over the surface with the 3d face tools and then have my model, but a issue with this is that I cant explode the surface into elementary elements AND the 3dface tool cant generate curves.
In short how to turn a 3D model into a 3D Face or a Surface into a 3d Face?
The program I am exporting the model into accepts the following:
DXF Entity SAP2000 Objects
1 POINT Point
2 LINE Frame/NLink
3 3DFACE Area
4 3DPOLYLINE Solid
5 CIRCLE Line(s)
6 ARC Line(s)
Note: To be able to import the dxf entities as solids in SAP2000, you must draw them in AutoCAD as meshed polygons or meshed solids. I could also export the model as a solid but again do not know how to get a meshed polygon or meshed solid from my 3d solid, when I do mesh smooth, the model basically turns into a rectangle and looses its detail.
As you can see it is number 3 I am working on. I have managed to create simple 3d faces and get them into the program but the 3dface tool is very primitive and I cant see how I would create the curves that my model has, I cant seem to form a grid system either to use the 3dface - everything seems to draw in space.
