AutoCAD Inventor :: Sheetmetal R15 Flanges - Connecting Corners
Feb 6, 2012
I'm using Inventor 2010 and I have a problem with connecting the sheet metal corners to each other when making round radius flanges. How to connect the corners to each other (even though this is probably not possible in reality). Even better would be if the flat pattern of the sheet metal part would also look proper.
Note that the short edges are 90 deg bent and longer edges are 75 and 105 deg bent. This also makes creating "corner fill" parts a bit tricky.

what people were doing to show "welded corners" in a sheetmetal part. I need something for pictorial purposes mainly!

easier way to program 45 degree corners on the top flange of two mating parts. We can't bend the ends on so they have to be welded. I am using inventor 2014 professional. Almost all my programming is done in sheet metal.

I've been having some issues recently with Sheet Metal parts. I am attempting to make a part that looks like this:
The only way I have been able to do this so far is by doing a contour roll to get the rounded part and then add the flanges on as part of an assembly.
I have attempted to do it as one Sheet Metal piece but I continually run into the problem where I cannot refold the part once I have the flanges.
Here are the steps I have gone through:
1. Created a contour roll to the necessary angle to get my desired dimensions
2. Unfolded the roll
3. Created my hole pattern
4. Folded back the flanges
This is where I got stuck. I attempted to refold the part between the bends but it will not let me do this. If I have one flange, I am able to refold but not when I have 2.
Another problem I have encountered is when I get one flange done, the thickness of it is larger than the rest of the part.

I was just wondering if there is an easier method of getting a 45 degree corner on flanges of 2 different sizes. 1 flange is 1" and the other is .75". I have been cutting the .75" flange down and adding to the face of the 1" flange.
The corner I'm talking about is on the far right of the part.

I am messing around with a part at the moment so if I was to put it up as an .ipt file it would be crucified for not being constrained, dimensioned etc etc.
I am trying to get a 25 and 20mm return fold on the back of a curved panel. No matter what I have tried I cannot figure out how to do this, I manged to get the model bend on it however this will not flatten out in Sheet metal correctly and I will need to send a drawing out in a flattened state.
The folds needed are shown in picture as well as the curved part
They need to go on the outer bend of the plate. If I tell the mmanufacturers to weld it in points along the flange that's ok, I just can't seem to model it to get a final drawing out!

I have couple of problems that I haven't managed yet on my own.
1. How I can get "smooth" bends without those "steps"? See part: Smooth Bend
2. How I can round that Flange's "inside" corner? Just smooth Corner Round like those other corners have. See part: Corner Round

Looking for reasons why I can't export DXF files from Inventor Sheetmetal parts. This has only occurred in the last few days.
Error says "Sketch export failed to initialize translator". This occurs when I run either of my 2 DXF macros AND if I RMB on the part Flat Pattern and Export Face As (or something like that - haven't that in a while). The macros lead me to a debug lin of oDataIO.WriteDataToFile sOut, oDXFfileNAME
I have used these 2 macros for 5+ years and have not experienced this before.
Add-ins shows that the Translator: DXF is Automatic / On Demand.
I found an earlier post here [URL] .... but this seems to be loosely related to Avast. I have Trend (server based). Can't remember any new installations of late apart from Flash.

I'm trying to create a hole in a sheet-metal part so that a pipe can be welded in it, see attached picture. What's the best method to do this? Because the flat-pattern of this hole isn't an ellipse-shape (more like an egg), it seems it's very difficult to do.

The question is if I have designed a part in sheet metal with multiple flanges and one of my edges follow a specific radius. Is is possible to use contour roll or any other means to create a flange on that edge that will allow me to flatten that out. I cant see it being physically possible putting a bend in there as the material would need to stretch and the bend tool would need to follow that radius.

Inventor 2013-I'm working on a sheet metal cover using contour roll and I find when I dimension the flat pattern that radii that should be the same are not. Can my approach is fundamentally flawed? I tried making this part out of one 220 degree contour roll and I found when dimensioning that the center points of the arcs are not symmetric as expected. I then used two contour rolls to create the part basing the second contour roll on the first contour roll sketches and I still have the same issues.

The last feature of this L-Bracket is a fold. When I create the flat pattern it is only unfolded, not completely flattened. Prior to INV 2009, I could get a wireframe flat pattern with the part still folded. Since then, I have to unfold to get a flat pattern. The only way to show the formed part and flat pattern in IN2012 is to use a derived part with the base component supressed and the base component with the fold supressed.
How to be able to simply flatten this part so I don't have to do extra work with two parts

I am using IV 2010. After creating a sheetmetal ipart my part grows slightly between each variance.
When toggling between the different parts IV says that they need updated. I have updated them but if I toggle back after updating the other parts IV wants me to update again and it creates a circle of updating. Does this mean that making a sheet metal i part is a half baked idea? Right now the way the program is responding to sheet metal iparts it would appear that you either cannot have a flat pattern or you part cannot lengthen or shorten the different variances with keeping the flat pattern. It would appear that all is well with part with exception of this updating problem. How to eliminate IV from asking to update in between variances while keeping the flat pattern? Also I am using sheet metal extens add in.

I have two sets of identical spur gears. I want them to be lined and connected big-small-big-small gear. But how to connect this two sets together. I can create motion and axes constrains but it still lacks teath meshing. I found some tutorial how to create differential drive, it works with downloaded gears but not with one that I create (it says to set imates to visible which does nothing and alt-move mesh imates toghether which also do not work). I work with 2009 and 2011 versions.

I am working on my project at home and I am having some problems with the fillet tool.
Attached is a picture of my problem with what it is doing.
I am trying to fillet A to E and E to C (B to D and D to F also)
On the left hand side when I fillet, it connects C to E instead of A to C and I do not know why it is doing that or what I am doing wrong.

As i discovered, frame generator is a very handy tool to make a frame, and to connect beams to each other.
For a customer we need to build a large frame, The outer beams are connected directly to each other. The beams inside the outer frame need to have a gap because of mounting and welding.
What i am looking for is a kind of tool, where i can add a notch, and after the notch, shorten the beam with 1 mm at each side to make a gap, which is needed for welding.
Inventor gives an error if i add first a notch followed by a Lengthen/Shorten command. How to add a notch and a gap of 1 mm to a connecting beam?

Than i created a plane that does not pass through that axis. i sketch on that plane than try to revolve using the axis. it gives me an error. what i have is a arm3+"w x 28"l that is pivoting in the in the center and about 9" from the end it tapers out .5". The bottom is the cutting edge that i need to revolve onto a weldment for matching to keep a tight seal.

I am importing drawings from autocad which are known to bend correctly in real life. However, when I bend the parts on inventor, there is interferance with the corners. Material is 18 GA. HRPO, bend radius and k-factor are updated correctly (to my knowledge). In my "folded" image, is there a way to prevent the part from bending past the bend line?
