AutoCAD Inventor :: Replace Model Reference Not Functioning
Jun 26, 2013
I have been using Inventor 2012 and have been wanting to replace model references in drawings (.idw) with other parts. Inventor will let me select the Replace Model Feature, select the model to be replaced, and find the model I want to replace it with. It will even have the prompt appear asking if I want to continue with the replacement. The issue is that when I hit yes, nothing gets replaced.

One of the new features in 2013 is the ability to copy a view that is on the idw. Is there a way to copy/paste a view, then replace the reference of ONLY the part in the view that was just copied?
What I have is two parts. For simplicity, just imagine both as a square plate. One has a hole in it, one doesnt. I have already dimensioned the square plate. Now I copy the view and paste it back on the sheet. I want to replace the reference of the one I just copied and change the reference to the part with the hole. If I use replace model reference command, it will replace both references, which is what I dont want.
Just a wish I guess, but the only way I can do this now it to place the second part on the sheet and start dimensioning it. Seems like a waste when we almost have the tools to quickly complete this.

Just done a little testing with some iam's
Anything larger that 500 parts and the drawing does nothing, no replace..

Two different problems (questions). These are IV2012 files but the problems are the same in 2013.
Open the two attached ipt's. Launch the Measure Distance tool and measure between the blue an red face on the DimTest. It should read 1 inch.
Change to DimTest Derive using the tabs on the status line. Measure still gives 1 in. Change precision to All Decimals. The mouse pointer changes to calipers and the distance now measure 1.004 (which is correct)
Switch back to DimTest again using the tabs.
Measure again and notice the mouse pointer still shows the calipers which imply that it is going to return all decimals but the dimension given is still just 1 inch. Either the mouse pointer should change back or all decimals should stick.
OpenDimTest.dwg. Manage> Modify> Replace Model Reference and pick DimTestDerive.
ALL dims disappear and the origin indicator goes sick.

I was wondering if there was a command that will get the file name of the model referenced in a drawing?
The reason I want to do this is because I have various programs to automate drawings, but I have to manually edit the code if i want to switch between using the code on assembly drawings and part drawings.
If i can get the model reference, I can then use a bit of extra programming to extract the extension. (i.e. .ipt or .iam)

I did some digging and found the option to replace a model reference in an entire drawing, but I'm looking to change the reference in just a view. Consider the picture I have attached. I'm depicting top down views of these layers. Each layer requires changing the view identifier each time I drop a view. This would be considerably less time consuming if I could just copy/paste the view and change which part file it was pointing to.

I am trying to link to parameters in sub-components of an assembly, and feed dimensions to them. When I am in my iLogic interface I browse to the the part in the assembly and click the plus sign next to the part I am interested in. I then click the "User Parameters" section under that part and find the parameter I want to change. Now the normal workflow is to double click the parameter and it shows up in your iLogic code like here in this example:
Parameter("MSS_Cabinet1_Frame:1", "Splice_Length2") = Cab1_SpliceLength2
Well when I try to do this now, I get this:
MSS_Cabinet1_Frame.iam.Splice_Length2
So obviously something got messed up in my machine and iLogic is no longer formating the code properly. It only happens on my machine here, everyone else in our department still works fine. I have also determined that it is happening on all files new and old.
My fear right now is that I may have to re-install Inventor and I do not want to have to do that. I do have a call in with tech support through my local reseller, but who knows how long that will take.

My problem today is that I made a Model of a Part of a ship using surfaces rather than solids because the engineer thought it would be easier to bring into ANSYS program for analysis but he is now having a problem with it and I am looking into converting my current model to solid. I can do it but the method I thought of using is quite long winded and we are working to a tight deadline.
1.open up the surface part
2.use "Offset/Thicken"
3.any clashes between parts make a sketch and cut away.
the problem is the amount of plates I have and the time it takes to sort them out.

I'm working on a large infrastructure project with numerous of drawings. On quite a few layout drawings I need to have the same base set of references, however I need to change the layer settings (colors, lineweight etc.). This cannot be done in the base reference itself as it is used by others. As the layouts I work with includes other references as well, it is time consuming to filter and change layer settings on each base reference.
My concept is to have a master reference file to manage all layer settings and add/remove base references. When the master reference is referenced into the layout, all layer settings on the base references should stay as set in the master reference. In this way I can easily control all base references with one file and make sure all changes will be the same for all the layouts.

I am getting this error in my production drawings.
My setup is as follows:
- EG.dwg has my existing surface in it. I create a data reference to use it in other drawings.
- Level One.dwg has the EG surface data referenced in, and I use this to create alignments, profiles, and finish surface. All of these are turned in to data references.
- Storm Sanitary.dwg has my pipe designs. I data reference in the two surfaces, profiles, and alignments, and create pipe networks. I create references for these networks.
- Plan Profile.dwg is the production sheet I'm getting this error from. Every one of my civil objects is data referenced in to this drawing. Everything is inserted correctly, the pipes show correct FG surface elevations for their rims, etc.
BUT when I open this drawing, I get this error. I assume it's because my FG surface is not directly in the storm sanitary.dwg.
How do I get rid of this error, without combining drawings, or promoting the surface to one or more drawings? Isn't this exactly what data references is made for?

I am capturing a book-case design that I made long ago into Intentor. I am almost finished, and I want to produce .dwg files and a bill of materials of parts that can be held.
For various reasons, almost all the items in the existing design are assemblies, and the underlying parts correspond more or less to half of physical parts that are contained inside a repeating cell. I will almost certainly continue using this approach.
A simplified design that shows this is at [URL]..... in the file Display.iam
I created the file Slat.ipt by using derive (Slat.iam).
If I replace the Slat assemblies with the file Slat.ipt, the bill of materials will show parts that correspond to physical parts that I can hold in my hand, or list on an invoice. I can do this with many, many mouse operations.
To make this modification quickly, I attempted to do Component -> replace on the Slat assembly. I use this operation a lot to replace one version of an assembly with another. When I do it with a .ipt file, the system pauses for some tens of seconds, then crashes.
A brute force work around is to use the mouse to do the replacement, essentially rebuilding the entire project in place.

I have 30 families of seals (arf arf!)
I would like to put family A in folder A
I would like to put family B in folder B
etc
During testing I had 10 seals in one folder & used :
Component.Replace("Part1:1", "OtherPartfilename.ipt", True)
But splitting the parts up into different folders breaks the model because (I'm guessing) the part can't be found. My thought was to have one folder (Seals) with subfolder (Seal A, Seal B,etc) - is there a way to search the sub folders & use replace?
If I stick with one folder it will end up containing 300+ parts which will look messy.

We get our clients acad drawings of the layout of the ceiling. Normally we use it as xref in acad. Now that I have placed the acad drawing in an .Ipt and placed them in a. Iam like you see in the files I sent. Then i place the panels with iCopy.
Now it happens that the layout drawing changes and I get a new acad drawing. I then replace it with the already placed drawing in the .ipt. This is fine until i update the .iam and then i get alerts that the constraints are no longer correct because the geometry is no longer be found.
What I can do is change the sketch in the .ipt but that is then done manually with the possibility of errors. Now my question is if you know a way to replace the drawing in the. Ipt and update so that the constriants stay correct in the .iam and the panels will change with the drawing?

I am trying to replace the title block of the first sheet of the active drawing via C#. I currently am receiving the following error on the last line of The parameter is incorrect. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070057 (E_INVALIDARG)).
Why the code below is throwing this error? I have tried multiple variations of the code below to no avail and I'm sure this is something minor that I am overlooking. The title block definition under Drawing Resources is replaced with no errors, the title block on Sheet 1 is deleted just fine, but I can't seem to add a Title Block back in!
How Documents are defined:
Inventor._DrawingDocument oDoc = getDoc();Inventor.DrawingDocument sourceDoc =(Drawing Document) instance.Documents. OpenWith Options(sPath, options, false); Find, copy, replace: TitleBlockDefinition tBlock = sourceDoc.TitleBlockDefinitions[blockList.SelectedItem.ToString()]; TitleBlockDefinition newBlock = tBlock.CopyTo(oDoc, true); oDoc.Sheets[1].TitleBlock.Delete(); oDoc.Sheets[1].AddTitleBlock(newBlock);

I have an assembly which I want to replace one of the parts with one of four other parts.
My code reads:
Select Case Width
Case "750"
Component.Replace("part:1", "L:Drawingspart2", True)
End Select
This works fine and when 750 is selected, part1 is replaced with part2.
My problem is then if I want to select "1000" I don't know the part name which I will be replaced by part3 as this could be part1, part2, part4,or part5.
