AutoCAD Inventor :: Possible To Create Exterior / Visible Surface Model From IAM

Jan 27, 2012

Is it possible to use an Autodesk Inventor .iam (assembly) to generate a file containing only the visible/exterior surfaces of that .iam?

My employer has a requirement that, in certain situations, only data without internal features/details can be supplied to customers. In this case, we only want the customer to be able to view the assembly & not see the internal features of individual parts.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Convert Surface To Solid Model / Turn Off Yellow Edges In Surface Model

Mar 4, 2008

We received a surface model from a vendor that I have patched up as best I can, it still has one hole that I can find that I haven't been able to fill. Ideally we would like to have a solid model, but I'm running out of time to get this done and the surface model we have would be good enough for our purposes IF I can get the yellow surface tangent lines to turn off or change their color to black.

I've attached a jpg of the surface model with the yellow lines and uploaded the model here: [URL].....

AutoCAD Inventor :: Convert Surface Model Into Solid Model?

Jan 15, 2013

My problem today is that I made a Model of a Part of a ship using surfaces rather than solids because the engineer thought it would be easier to bring into ANSYS program for analysis but he is now having a problem with it and I am looking into converting my current model to solid. I can do it but the method I thought of using is quite long winded and we are working to a tight deadline.

1.open up the surface part

2.use "Offset/Thicken"

3.any clashes between parts make a sketch and cut away.

the problem is the amount of plates I have and the time it takes to sort them out.

2.  What is the minimum dimension to make my part appear?

On the drawing I was working on, the part completly behind a surface was showing up until I rotated the view, then it dissapeared, this behaviour is not present in the test idw, the part doesnt appear at all behind the surface.

AutoCAD Inventor :: How To Make Skeletal Model For Steel Frames Visible In DWG Environment

Oct 4, 2012

I've generated my steel frame model using a skeletal model technique. So my part file consists of only sketch lines representing where I want my steel to be placed. I've created an assembly and used that in my inventor.dwg file.

The problem is that I need to dimension to the sketch file and not to the model shapes because the sketch lines define the center of gravity. These lines aren't visible even though I've right-clicked on the content and selected "Get Model Sketches". How I can get my skeletal model through to the DWG environment?

It seems to move the sash/panels just fine but the jamb is constrainted somehow.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Export Surface Model As STL File

Aug 6, 2010

I'm wondering if there is a possibility in Inventor to export a surface model as a STL file. I use CAD programs to prepare models for simulations in other software and I would like to work with Inventor because my Department uses it. Till now I have been using Solid Works and with a little trick it is possible to export surfaces as a STL file. In Inventor I didn't manage to do this. So, is it possible?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Laser Scan Data To Surface / Solid Model

Jan 19, 2013

I am trying to find a way to import a laser scanned mesh or point cloud file into Inventor (2013) such that I can use it to make a parametric representation of the form. The import format can be STL, OBJ, VRML, XYZ or PLY. I have tried the Mesh Enabler from Autodesk Labs but the files I am looking to work-on are bigger than the enabler can cope with and my system slows right down or locks-up.

I know bespoke reverse engineering software is the ideal way to go but I was hoping there was a way to model over a mesh to represent its form to create a placeholder in a parametric assembly. I'm not looking for accuracy, just a surface or solid output that can be constrained to native inventor parts. If I could get the files to STEP or IGES someway that would be enough.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Make Single Surface Of Part Transparent So Inside Of Part Is Visible?

Mar 11, 2013

I'm modeling a temperature gauge and would like to have glass over the gauge so the inside is visible. I can easily do this with an assembly, but I'm wanting to do this with a single part. I tried to derive a new part from the assembly, but the transparent part turns solid so nothing inside is visible. Is it possible to do this?

I've include pictures of what I want and what I end up with.

Basically trying to fill the 2 small areas between the visible workplanes. Also, I couldn't get the project cut edges in the 2 sketches to only project the curves I needed, so all the cylinder edges are projected.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Create Surface Bodies From Multiple Faces?

Dec 27, 2013

I've currently written an application for SolidWorks that reads file that geometry in the form of faces (ie. 3 or 4 double values that represent triangular and quadirilateral faces).  I am trying to create the same application to work for Autodesk Inventor, but I am having some issues.

First, I am basing my code off from the examples given in the help files.  There's a lot of pointers to objects being to get to the Face creation portion, this seems to be slowing my appliation down considerable compared to the SolidWorks counterpart.  SolidWorks API has a modelling method called CreatePlanarSurfaceDLL that allows me to provide an array of doubles representing the vertex points in order (x, y, Z) for each point, so the array looks like this for a triangle (P1.X, P1.Y, P1.Z, P2.X, P2.Y, P2.Z, P3.X, P3.Y, P3.Z).  Is there anything similar in the Inventor API to simply the process?

Secondly, when using the example, they all have a known "shape" and therefor there are a definied number of vertices, edges, faces, etc.  And when adding the faces, the known points / vertices are used.  In my case, each face contains information for it's 3 or 4 vertices.  I created these using the prescribed methods, but when the final surface body feature is created, and a repair is performed on it, it shows a lot of duplicate edges and vertices.  Do I need to take the time and filter out all of the duplicate vertices, and point to a single vertex that may represent a vertext used by up to 3 or 4 faces?

What is the best way to create a workplane at a given angle on the surface of the tube. Imagine the workplane long and thin running along the surface of the tube. The angle will be a parameter (from a sketch or user).

I'd like the workplane to always be on the surface of the tube, even when the diameter of the tube (from a dimension in a sketch) changes.I'm thinking that a (angled) line in the same sketch as the two circles (which define the tube diameter and thickness) would be a good starting point.
