AutoCAD Inventor :: How To See Information On The Block
May 10, 2012
When I create a sketch block, there is a description area. After the block is saved, how can I see this information again? If I right click on the block in the browser, I cant find it anywhere.

I've argued this repeatedly with the powers that be at my small company and they're set on some old methods that I'm trying to figure out how to make happen.
We often have weldments where we do an assembled view on page 1 and balloon it and have a parts list. Pages 2-4 will be the details of the welded parts. On page 1, I bring in the "Title" and "Subject" fields from the assembly iProperties.
Here's the tricky part. On pages 2+, I don't want to bring in those two fields, I want to bring in something different. Is it possible to differentiate like that?
Second part of the question: is there a way to pull the balloon item number from page 1 into a field somewhere on following pages? For example: page 3 may show the details for "item 2". Can I bring the value of that balloon (item 2) into page 3 somehow?

I was curious, when creating multi sheet drawings, how can I place different information in the title block on each drawing?
Example, 2 pages, Description on page 1 = PAGE 1 DESC, by default this same description will show up on all subsequent pages. How do I get page 2 description to be different?

I want to create an application that intensively uses dynamic blocks, cross checking any new or changed block entity with existing ones.
It needs to be almost instantaneous but the only way I know will be impractical.
Looping through the property collection of each block reference, searching for each parameter then checking for a match.
Is there some sort of database functionality I can use to quickly compare block information?

I am not sure this is even possible, but could I use some sort of invisible block attribute data and everytime I insert it into a drawing (I use the same block multiple times within a drawing) it would autopopulate fields in a table. For example I have a smoke detector symbol I insert, I also have a specific address associated with every single detection symbol I insert into a drawing, would I be able to attach data such as what type of detector it may be and have the address and type automatically populate in a table everytime I insert my block into a drawing?

I am working with a set of dynamic blocks, each with a block table that provides a drop down for the user to alter attributes from. My goal is to be able to update the block table using VBA to push data from an excel file. I do have import/export code that will update block attributes, but I am not sure the functions that would access the table properties.

I am a AutoCad drafter for telecommunications and I have utility pole points (long/lats)
I can insert the poles via long/lat and all is great, my issue is I would like more information in those points.
For example, pole number, class, HOA, Make Ready. Currently I create a survey data store and import ASCII Points using PNE(comma delimited)
So with my Excel file (this is where I get my pole information from) I get a point/northing/easting to enter into the formatting section.
I would like to add more information to these individual points, like ploe number, class, HOA...
If I view the point table I see that there are a lot of other columns, can I use them or customize them? is there a quick tutorial on this issue?

I tried to get the XML-Information of a weld. But the string that should contain this information is empty. Did I make a mistake?, or is this feature not supported by Inventor 2014 anymore. Even the helping page "More XML Weld Info..." doesn't exist anymore and leads to an error.
This is my VBA-Code to show the XML-Info string for each weld within the assembly in a message box:
Sub WeldInfo()
'is the active document an assembly?
If ThisApplication.ActiveDocument.DocumentType <> DocumentTypeEnum.kAssemblyDocumentObject Then
Return
End If

I've been tasked with looking into the capabilities of Inventor, which we (company I work for) may not be using to their fullest. Now, I am not an Inventor user, I'm on the IT side (programming), but I know the general process for how our models/drawings/documents are created. I think a good word to describe our process is "kludgy". From what I've found in searching for a handful of hours, it seems that Inventor could do what we are doing in other programs, easier and faster.
The background: We have a database and application setup for tracking BOM with costs, weights, etc. We are using Inventor 2012 as well as Vault. We already have lots of parts and assemblies drawn/modeled. Most of our drawings/documents are made in AutoCAD, though I'm not sure how much is coming from Inventor. There are some internally developed macros for exporting these to other formats (.doc).
Would it be possible to import in the data that we already have elsewhere, and match it up to our parts/assembles in Inventor/Vault? This could allow us to improve the process by taking out some of the manual work (in AutoCAD), and improve the accuracy of the information (manual data entry).

I'm using balloons to get information from parts, then writing that part info to a custom table. I need to keep track of which balloon corresponds to which table row.
Is there some object/property of Balloon where I can store a single number or string? I'm already using the value field, so that's unavailable to me.
Also, one balloon corresponds to one table entry. That means I cannot create a custom iProperty in the part the balloon is attached to since more than one balloon may reference the same part.

When defining a wire, to get the correct termination at each end I would like to add Virtual Parts to the Connector Pin Name properties (Select the with, RMB - Harness Properties- From To- Properties (connector Pin Name)- Virtual Parts.
Is there any way to get properties from this onto a Loom Report allied to the wire? Our current Loom drawings list the wire with the terminal connectors at either end. I have tried using GETPART1 & GETPART2 in the cfg definition but this picks up on the Part with the Pin, not the Virtual Part on the wire.

- when modelling a part file in Inventor, only the dimensions we set (dimensions we give a name and a value), are listed in the parameters table. This way, its possible to export the information listed in that table.
- the information listed in the parameters table is based on sketches and features dimensions, as obvious.
So , my question is: is it possible to access the information (dimension values) contained in a feature (or a sketch) without setting a specific name or value to it?
For example, in the attached pictures, if a rectangular form is drawn and the dimensions are sett, these will be listed in the parameters table (see attached "pic1" and "pic1 - params").
But, in the other hand, if the same rectangular form is drawn, but this time without setting any dimension, the parameters table will be empty, obviously (see attached "pic2").
After this, i can surely presume that Inventor saves or keeps this information somehow, somewhere, without having to set dimensions or values.
So, my question is: is it possible to access sketches and/or features information without setting this values?

I want to present additional information on my drawings, whether in notes or some other form depending on whether it is a part or assembly drawing. The information I want to get access to is included in the material library and comes from the material Physical tab > Information section > Source, Subclass, Type, & Name.
Is the material library information accessible this way?

Often times when I mirror a sheet metal part in an assembly, several problems occur: The material thickness (in sheet metal defaults) gets reset to the default
Example: My parts are .1875". I mirror one part in the assembly (creating a new part), then when I attempt to create a flat pattern for that part, it doesn't do it right because the thickness in the "Sheet Metal Defaults" is set to .125 (my template default). The "Use Thickness from Rule" check box is NOT checked in my template, but it checks itself when I mirror a part.
The mates completely disappear meaning I have to reconstrain the part.
I have two custom iProperties in my sheet metal template: LENGTH and WIDTH (each set to <SHEET METAL LENGTH> etc.). It retains WIDTH but loses LENGTH, so I have to go manually create a new custom property to get my LENGTH back.

I'm currently using Inventor 2012 and i need a macro (code): I want to know if it's possible to export all the information from the parameters list (everything, names, values, tolerances, comments...) to an excel spreadsheet or a txt file (it can be a table, or a CVS file, i just want that information!), from a part file (.ipt) or a drawing file (.dwg).
Currently, i can only export the parameters' names and values , but i can't get to the tolerance values and comments . . .

You create a part, or assembly, check it into vault, then do a copy design in Vault. When you open the copied assembly, any sheet metal parts have reverted back to default thickness, making it so flat patterns don't work right until you manually change it. Also half of my custom parameters (sheet metal length and width) go missing and I have to type them in manually. Why does Inventor 2013 drop such information?

We usually create our assemblies and parts by modeling up solid bodies in one part file and using the make components command to create the individual parts and assemblies. I would like to either use properties or parameters in the initial part file to put in project information and have it carry over into the individual parts after using make components. That way the drafter has to put the information into one file and not 100+ when all the part files are made. I would love to do it with text type parameters but unfortunately haven't been able to do this since you can't export them (unless I am missing something). The end goal is to be able to put a parts list on a shop drawing grabbing the assembly but pulling custom information from the parts and trying to minimize the amount of work the user has to do by going in each part and adding the information.

what information regarding countersunk holes is exposed in the Inventor API? Can we extract individual values for the countersink diameter, the countersink angle and the through/straight hole diameter and depth?
While I'm at it, is there an in-depth reference document (PDF) for all of this information. The only thing I could find was an image of the object model but that only gets you so deep and doesn't have an explanation of any of the properties shown on the chart. (I tried searching for various hole-related properties shown on the chart and got zip.)

I am currently trying to retrieve data from a MS Access Database, we currently have iProperties with number values in them. An outside programmer created a code which takes these values and exports them to an MS Access Database, where they are then translated to mean something.
Instead of exporting those numbers, I want to use them to find what they ACTUALLY mean within the database and bring that information back into iLogic. (ie. 123456 actually means "1/4 Flat Bar Steel")
In short, I wish to access the MS Access database through iLogic in order to read information from it.
I have searched for the better part of 3 hours but have not found a good answer or example code of this situation. I am not that experienced in programming, but have worked with the API before for developing Automated Drawings and have an understanding how to navigate through. If there were to be some example code, I can begin to understand the process quite well through this method as well by seeing how to go about coding this.

it's possible to export informations stated in "tailing note box" from all welding symbols? The reason why I'd like to do it...it's because each weld in the drawing has his own number and I'd like to be able to work with these weld numbers in MS excel. It means I'd like to be able to export all the weld numbers and also to change these weld numbers in the drawing via MS excel.
