AutoCAD Inventor :: Creating A Solid From Different Surfaces
Sep 6, 2012
I'm having trouble creating a solid from different surfaces.
I already tried the surface stick, but it seems that it is still not a solid. (How can I check this?) The part is still yellow. If I try to apply the sculpt feature it says:
Modeling failure: A valid body cannot be constructed based on the selected inputs.
It 's a quiet complex shape. You find here: [URL].....

I have two .dwg files that represent two different surfaces. I would like to import each .dwg file into Inventor, then create a solid with the original surfaces serving as the top and bottom. I can send the .dwg files if necessary.

I am using Inventor 2012 and I am trying to create a circle from a solid drawing I have done, I am creating a 3D drawings of a pressure seal, but I don't know how to go about making this block into a circle with a Diameter of:-
OD 899.8
ID 873.6

I have attached what I have done so far. I think I need to keep it in sketch to do this though?

I need to know how to make a solid from various surfaces. For example, making an exploded box back into a solid. I can't simply loft the surfaces because the problem I'm working on is far more complex-- it is a submarine defined by surfaces, but I need it all to be one solid.

I have a model where i need to make a solid fill between some surfaces to get a solid 3D model.
I have attached the a pic of the drawing showing where i want to fill. I have tried using LOFT but it doesn't fill or it creates a solid cone instead. The thing i need is the "negative" for a cone. I have also tried to use Shell after LOFT created a cone, but that didn't work either.

My issue is we have Universal assemblies that never change. These assemblies are thousands of parts. (hardware gaskets other random assemblies.) this top level universal assembly never changes.
to increase time in layouts. we would like to create these universal assemblies into 1 sold part.
Is there a was to export an assembly into a single solid part.

I've just started learning AutoCAD and came across my first obstacle I don't know how to work around. Here's what I'm trying to do.
I draw two lines and two circles and then trim the excessive parts as in the picture (in general it can be an area composed of various types of lines, straight lines, arc, and likely with rounded corners).
Then extrude to the height 2. This makes 4 surfaces (green). Now I build a solid 'around' the surfaces. In this example I draw a rectangle and extrude to the height 1 (red). And my question is: how do I remove the part of the solid that's enclosed within the green surfaces? Subtraction doesn't work as I don't subtract solid. Slicing doesn't work either as it's more than one surfaces. For the same reason I can't turn it into a solid.

Basically I have drawn some lines, arcs and splines in the 3D space, then I created surfaces between these lines, arcs and splines, thus I created an 'object' which is defined by all these surfaces.
And what I want to do now is to fill up the empty space and basically convert it into a 3D solid object.
Another example would be a loft 'object', and it creates only a surface, so may I somehow fill up the empty space and turn it into an object?

I'm working on a project, and I need to make this collection of surfaces into a single solid object. I tried using sculpt, and after a few hours of trying to find the leak, I have failed. not watertight.
Also, I need to get this thing to a cnc mill, and they keep asking me for 2d drawings, dimensions, and tolerances. I assumed the 3d file would be good enough. How to make a file ready for a cnc, and how to make 2d drawings without putting 600 measurements all over the image? Every time I try to do a 2d object, the whole thing is a mess.

I'm trying to create a surface under my 'existing ground' surface. There is shallow rock where one of our projects is located and using geotechnical data I want to create a 'rock surface' at the known rock elevations. I just want this surface for visual reasons and do not want it to interact with the existing ground or pipe network.
I have 4 places along the roadway where I know the rock elevations. I created new points around each known point with the same elevation so there would be more than just four points on the surface and so I could make it the width of the road allowance. But when I look back to my profile of the road, it shows the existing profile drop to the rock surface at each place that I created points for the rock elevation. Not sure how to make it so the existing ground surface doesn't pick up the new points I added for the rock elevations.

I'm modeling a couple different alternatives, and I want to make an inside mask on EG where my FG surface will be.
Is my workflow the problem, or are surface masks just buggy?
I've created three EG surfaces, EG-1, EG-2, and EG-3. I pasted the dref'd EG into each one, so now I have three copies of EG, one for each design option. Each surface is on its own layer.
I have three FG surfaces, one for each design, FG-1, FG-2, FG-3. I want to use the outer border of each FG in turn to make an inside mask for its respective EG surface. I can make one, masking FG-1 out of EG-1. When I move on and try to make the mask for FG-2 to mask EG-2, no mask is created. Is it not working because I pasted the same original EG into each of the three EG option surfaces? Do I need to promote the original dref'd EG and copy it two more times, so each mask is applied to a completely unique surface?

I have created 2 surfaces of a matierial that is buried, using drill hole data. I have a surface for the top, and then a surface for the bottom of this material. I then created a 3rd suface comparing these 2, creating an isopac contour showning the thickness of the material. My question is this:.....is there a way to make the zero (0) contour show up? I have a .5 contour interval, but 0 doesn't generate. Could i be missiing something in the settings?

Our company, was contracted to create a DTM of a residential neighborhood using our Lieca HDS C10 Laser Scanner. Utilizing the Leica software I was provided LandXML file that contained a 2ft by 2ft Mesh surface along with breaklines for the edge of roadway, driveways and sidewalks, which was imported into Civil 3D 2012.
Our client now wishes for us to provide them with a breakline for the crown of the roadway. My first thoughts on calculating such breakline was to set the Contours at an interval of 0.05' to identify the crown of the road, then drawn the break line along the crown based on contours.
Is there a way to automatically create a Breakline from Exisitng Surfaces?

My question is "Can I create surfaces, profiles, & alignments using AutoCad2012?"
I know if I had Civil3D2012 I could do it, but can it be done with the Regular version I should say.
At my previous job I was using Civil3D2010 (darn economy Government job did lay offs) and now I'm using CAD2012 with new employer and I'm realizing that there are a lot of functions/commands that I don't have.

I am working on a project, I was given a file with the contour already mapped out. I am tasked with finding volume of a fill I had to create. I made a 3-D polyline at the elevation I want my fill to start from and going down to my final grade. How can I make surfaces with my map. I do not have any files to make the surface off of. What is the easiest way I can make a layer, TIN has already been done but no surfaces are in the file.

I'm trying to split a single solid body into 2 solid bodies. The problem is that the body I'm trying to split consists of two separate pieces. I can split a body when it is a single piece no problem, but I'm having the problem when the two pieces are not joined at all.
When I try and split it on the origin plane it gives this error:
"Creating parting line failed. Could not build this Split"
When I try and split it on a work plane lying on one of the pieces it gives this error:
"Creating parting line failed. Modeling failure in ASM. Redefine inputs."
Or, another variation on this erorr:
"Creating parting line failed. Split feature could not create two bodies. Change the Split Tool so that split feature can create two bodies."

I am making a design on inventor 2013 for a colleague who does not know how to use the inventor.
I want to make the solid and then set something up that allows the user to change a few of the parameters of the solid in a very user friendly way (i.e. a box that says "cylinder radius" and has an input box so the user can enter a value).

I am trying to cut out a logo from a 3D solid. Essentially the thing I'm trying to 'cut' is a box, simple. However, the logo I has is reasonably complicated and a conversion to DWG from an Illustrator file.
I have tried creating the whole thing as a surface, no luck
Tried exploding it into both lines, polylines and splines, no luck
The nearest I get is a long winded way round. Im having to joins the splines, then convert to polyline, then convert to surface, then thicken the surface. This would be ok, but there's lots of text and so on.
I just wondered if there's a simple way of doing it that I've missed? Such as "cut these 2D lines out of this 3D shape" command and then delete the sliced out pieces I don't want.

I have the 3d model of a ship, but it has no surfaces or solids, just lines. I want to create some solids based on those lines.
It's better if i attach the dwg to the post and explain what i want to do:
- in the file attached there are some lines marked with red and blue
- i want to create a solid/3dobject by extruding/lofting the red lines along the blue lines.
In the drawing only a few lines are colored, for better understanding. I tried with loft, but it only creates some surfaces. The point is that i need a solid or a 3d object.

My ultimate aim for this small drawing is to convert it to an .STL file. For this the shape needs to be a solid or watertight mesh. I've attached the drawing in CAD - it's very basic! I just want to create a solid shape, using the surface, with a flat base up to the lines drawn on. Or even just a surrounding mesh so that the shape can be exported as a .STL. I just can't figure out how to do it!

I have discovered a 3D polyline cant be joined to a 2D polyline and when i exploded 3Dpline then flattened it ,as recommended elsewhere on this forum,it seems its shrunk in length. The NC router I have access to has to use 2D polyline for the path of the cutter.wish i could simply fed the 3D object into the NC router software and that was all i had to do.

I am in need of creating a solid drawing from my wireframe drawing in model space. I have never done any 3d modeling in autocad before it took me a few days just to get the wireframe of a staircase done! I have tried to render this object in viewport but it disappears after I click on it or move around, therefore I cannot see it in my paper layout. How do I make a rendered object stay? Also I want to plot this on 22x34in and 11x17in paper, how would I go about getting a high quality rendered image. I am using autocad 2010.
