AutoCAD Inventor :: Add Sketch To Part Using Face Referenced From Assembly
Jan 24, 2012
what im trying to do is select a face in an assembly and create a sketch on it in the part level
this is just one step in the program im trying to make the overall program will create a tube frame and the tubes will be driven from a base solid
Sub test1()
Dim asmDoc As AssemblyDocument
Set asmDoc = ThisApplication.ActiveDocument
Dim asmDef As AssemblyComponentDefinition
Set asmDef = asmDoc.ComponentDefinition

I have placed an subassembly into another assembly that I am working on. This sub was then chagned to be a "reference". Now in the idw, I would like to pull a leader to the subassembly and I want the text in the leader to say what is in the "Title" Property of the subassembly. When I change the format of the leader text to be Type = "Properties-Model" and Property= "Title", I get the title of the part in the subassembly, not the title of the subassembly. It is like the subassembly is a phantom assembly, but it is not. The workaround is to manually type in the text, but this is a mistake waiting to happen.
Is there a way to get the leader to note the title of the subassembly correctly.

I can't seem to find how to use the Inventor 2012 API to project an entire sketch profile from one .ipt to another .ipt file from within an .iam file.

I'm making a part and am adding features to it and using my existing sketch dimensions as my guide. The problem is that when there are sketch dimensions on the face of the part, they are difficult to read. I'm forever dragging these dims to the side in order to read them, it's just a bit annoying. I was wonering if there was a setting that made them show up as well as they do when the aren't sitting on the face of my parts. I've attached a .jpg of what I'm talking about. notice the dimension on the left side and the bottom.

I am using Inventor 2014. I have a sketch on a part that does not show up when I put the part into an assembly. Any way to make the sketch show up in the assembly? It is a 3d sketch that is projected to a surface.

Unfortunately, it's chock full of proprietary customer data, so I can't share the parts or the assembly. But I can pretty well explain what needs to happen, and I've attached a JPG that shows a bit of what I'm doing.
I need to design a bracket to hold an RPM sensor at a certain gap to a spiral bevel gear. I've got a huge assembly model (non-Inventor) from the customer, as well as the model for the sensor. My plan is to start a master IAM, insert the customer assembly, insert the sensor and constrain him, and draw the various hardware I need around the sensor.
So I start by making a work plane that matches the bevel angle and is in a location so the end of my sensor will be flush to that plane. Create a sketch on that plane, then project 2 relevant axes to create the appropriate "origin" from which my location will be based. Place a point on one line, at a certain radial distance and constrain my point.
So now I've got a point and a plane that are where I want my sensing face and my centerline axis to be. What now? I was thinking that I'd create a work axis "normal to plane through a point", but this workflow isn't available in the assembly environment. I can't constrain a solid to a sketch point, so I really don't know what to do at this point in order to put the part where I need it.

I need converting imperial dimensions into metric in assembly as weell as part level sketches dimensions.
Any solution for converting all imperial dimensions to metric dimensions in whole assembly constraint level and as well as part level sketch dimensions. Any macros or any ilogic rules?

Is it possible to make the column 'REV' automatically equal to the 'Item' column in attached BOM view? I manually added the values 1 to 5 in the REV column for example.
Maybe with some ilogic rule? I don't know if it's possible and/or where to start.
When i place a mono-part-detail on a assembly drawing i want to be able to place a leader referenced to the REV value. When this is possible there is a link between assembly item number and the mono-part leader.

How do I duplicate the 2D line work from a part level sketch into a drawing level (overlay) sketch?
I started a simple 2D piping system diagram sketch by opening a new part file and using a sketch to stick draw the system schematic including some annotations. Then I opened a new drawing file and made a base view of the part file to bring a view of the original sketch into the drawing.
I realize now that it would have been much easier to have created the schematic directly in a 2D sketch at the drawing level, which would have made editing the annotations much easier at the drawing level, and there is really no need for the part file to exist. I have no intention of creating a 3D model or "real" part in the .ipt file, was just using it as a jumping off point to sketch.
I was thinking that I could correct my error in judgment by just copying the sketch and pasting it into a new sketch on the drawing, but it doesn't want to work that way. I have tried copying both the whole sketch at the browser level, and the entire sketch contents (all of the lines and annotations) from the opened part sketch, but when I attempt to paste either of those into the drawing, paste does not seem to be an option. I'd rather not have to draw the whole thing again, as in typical fashion, my once simple sketch has grown in proportion and complexity from its simple beginning.

I am trying to derive a part in an assembly from an existing part so that when the first part's geometry is altered the second part will update accordingly. I have tried to use the derive tool but I only need the bottom geometry of the part to derive a base plate part from and I see no way to select just that face when using the derive tool.

What I'm doing is preparing a model for FEA, and I want to split some faces for where the nuts meet a surface. So far I've only been able to do this by repeatedly making a sketch and then splitting around each hole. Is it possible to do several splits from one drawing or to pattern the split? (I've attempted both, but failed hard).
Splitting a surface 5 times is slow, but essentially fine. Doing it this way when I have more bolt holes though is a chore.

I am having to model a spiral slide in sections, and the top piece has this weird angled lip where the opening distorts. Im simply trying to take the face of the extruded part (in three sections) and loft it to the sketch on a different plane. And use the sketched curve as the centerline.

The one below doesn`t work.

I would like to simplify this assembly into one seamless part for FEM calculation:The assembly consists out of parts that, in reality, will be welded together. Due to their form, there is no way to place them exactly onto each other, therefore there are slight gaps between the parts:
Now when I try to merge the assembly into one part via "simplify" --> "create simplified part" and choose "single solid body with seams between planar faces merged", Inventor does not fill these gaps (even though it displays only one part in the bottom right corner of my window). Unfortunately, the remaining gaps brings "contact" problems in the FEM simulation.
how to close the gaps and really merge the assembly into one part?

I have a part that has protrusions. When i mate that part up to another part that second part needs to have cutouts/holes to receive those protrusions.
i mainly use it in sheetmetal parts. and use the rectangular protrusions on de contour to mate up with corresponding cutouts in the other sheet. this works with positioning and also makes for a nice weld spot/area.
But also for making holes to accommodate a mold pin used in custom punch dies. I want the intervening part to receive a corresponding (propperly tolleranced) hole automatically. Much like a bolted connection does.
same for parts like circlips. i want them to automatically generate the seat in the part it's mated to. Rather than using the axle generator.
Ofcourse one can place the parts and do an in assembly interpart projection and go from there, but i want the part to generate the (predifined) modification to the other part. It would save time and also reduces problems as the parts are moved about or even removed.

I have a two part duct fire damper assembly. The IDW has the combined two part assembly, which I know how to turn the CoG on, so that it can be dimensioned. The problem is each piece will more than likely be hoisted separately so I would like to show the CoG for each piece, not the combined master assy.is there a way to do this?

There are instances where we need to add an extrusion in an assembly (.iam) to show labeling that needs to be done on the floor during assembly.
So we do a new sketch to the face where we need to add the "label", we use text and extrude it 0.001" deep (cut).
On the drawing (.idw) you can see it no problem, but in the model (.iam) itself it's hard to see since the faces that result from the extrusion are the same color as the participant part.
My question is this: Is it possible to change the color of the face of the extrusion?
It's not super important but it would be a good thing to show that detail as we sometimes print a color version of the 3D view for prototyping, troubleshooting, etc.

I am trying to pinpoint the center of gravity on a curved face of an assembly. I can use the c og G command to get the true center of gravity but i would like to incorporate lifting eyes into the finished assembly. Basically I need to know how to find the C of G on a given surface. I have attached the assembly I am working on and added lifting eyes roughly where I would like them. I have tried measuring from the C of G to a face and then creating the lug above the C of G but somehow it doesn't line up.

I need to fillet part on an edge on the top face of the enclosed part, is this possible? I have tried a few things but the fillet command always selects all the edges on the face to fillet.
once selected it says in the selection box that 15 edges are selected, and I can't ctrl click to remove any of them singly, basically it will deselect them all? I have made sure I have loop select off.

What I have is a sketch of a hole. The hole has a flattened side to prevent the part from rotating. What I want to be able to do is to put this "part" (an ipt file with just the sketch in it) on any surface of any case, top, left, right, bottom, or even the front or back. So it needs to rotate 90 degrees in x, y or z or combination thereof.
I've been told several things by the local assistants, such as "copy it, place it on the desired plane in the .ipt file, delete the original sketch, then insert it into the assembly", which doesn't work, or use the Component>Rotate command, which gives me infinite degrees of freedom, making it hard to tell when I've rotated 90 degrees in the correct axis.
The sketch will be used in a number of assemblies, including machined aluminum, 3D printing, and laser-cut acrylic.
In essence, I want to place this sketch flat on a surface, then extrude "To" the other side of the surface. I want the flat edge of this sketch (the side that keeps the part that will be inserted in the hole from rotating) constrained to be parallel to one of the edges. I have looked around a lot through the documentation and several other Web sites, and there does not seem to be an answer to this.
The sketch is simple: a circle with a flattened side, so if that sketch needs to be discarded, it is no major "expense" to me in effort. But given my projected series of projects, creating reusable drawings is going to be important. So how should I be thinking of this?
