AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Adding Custom Contour Lines?
Jul 26, 2012
I am trying to add contour lines to a surface at very specific elevations (rain event elevations). I can add all the intervals I want but can't seem to figure out how to add a contour at a certain elevation.

how I would go about adding contour lines to a map? I entered roughly 200 points (x, y, and z values) into an x-y plane on AutoCAD and figured that if I were to add contour lines (1' elevation difference), it would rely on the z axis. In short: how do I add contour lines if the points are all plotted?

I have a client that just started using C3D 2010. When I sent him a topographic survey with contour lines (I am also using C3D 2010) he called me and asked if there was a way to select an individual contour line and have it display the elevation in the 'properties' dialog box. I have not been able to find an answer for him.

Is there a way to quckly join contour lines that have been broken where the contour elevation is?
example, if this were a contour line ---------501---------
I'd want to delete the contour elevation and join the line to make a continuous contour line.....

We recently received a LiDAR data in the form of an .asc file. Brought it fine into Civil 3d.
However, the level data is in mm so levels are showing as 98450 instead of 98.45. The level ranges from 98450 to 166260.
When I create a surface and set the style to show contours, it only displays contour lines below 100,000. Is this a limit in Civil 3D or am I missing some setting somewhere? I'm using the UKIE template btw.

I’m having some issues with my CAD. Every now and then, my contour lines disappear and I can’t get them to reappear. My surface border and triangles will appear but not the contours. Sometimes if I change surface styles they will appear but other times they are gone forever.
Troubleshooting: Regen AllAuditPurgeLayers on/offLayers frozen/thawedPromoting (if the surface is a data short cut)Changing the surface styleChanging the contour interval
None of this has worked…

Which option should I choose to label the contours this way?

I am having problems viewing my contour lines after I create a surface. I create the surface using points. The contour lines will show up when I create the surface. After I close the program or the drawing, I am not able to see the contour lines again. The contour lines are on in the surface style. How can I see the contour lines without creating the surface again?

I just upgraded to Civil3D 2014 and Windows 8. When I create a TIN surface using a DEM file no contour lines are displayed. Points are processed and triangles are created and can be displayed but no contour lines. Contour line layers are set to display in the style file.

I have drawing giving to us for a senior design project. I'm trying to create a surface to so that I can analyze cut/fill. Not sure if what i'm doing is right or wrong, I've never used civil 3d. But i'm getting break-line errors whenever i'm trying to create the surface from the contour lines.
Heres a link i took of what i'm doing on youtube [URL]........

See everything circled in orange on attached pdf.

When I plot my dwg my contour lines disappear. Looks good in model and layout but when I plot (usually to pdf) the contour lines do not show. Labels for contours are there. I attached samples.

I have this contour lines from dwg file (see attached) and I am trying to make a surface out of it. Initially i thought it is already a surface for C3D but i cant seem to follow tutorials. While browsing for solutions from the Internet, it seems it is not even a contour file that can be added in C3D. what is this file and how i can convert it into a surface in C3D?

As far as I know there is no way to add or remove vertices on contour label lines. Is this correct?
If so it's another one for my wish list.

I was given a file from a competetor (this is evil)
The file has coordinates in feet (x, y) but elevations (Z) in meters.
I need the contours intact (cant explode block and scale) to create a surface from.
The other part is this is a big file so anything by hand would be rediculous.
I need the final file where the x,y has stayed the same but the z has been adjusted to the correct foot elevation (scaled)

Is it possible to add a custom object such as soil reinforcement to C3D? I have a roadway grading plan with cut/fill slopes that will require geosynthetic reinforcement. Is it possible to add reinforcement to the drawing and have C3D calculate quantities?

I draw property plats for a surveyor and looking for a way to add the bearings (for example: N 56 15' 32" E) along the property lines. Right now, I use the Distance command to find out the bearing, write it down, and then add it to the aligned linear dimension text. I'm guessing there's a faster way to get a bearing along with the distance without typing it in.

When adding break lines to a surface, a dialog box like appears that asks for weeding factors and supplementing factors. What I would like to know is, how can I change the defaults to reflect the settings needed on my project.
I am using C3D 2009.

So simple little retaining wall subassembly created in the SAC. When i extract multiple feature lines from a corridor using this subassembly, all the feature lines assume the elevation of the first link i selected. So if i first click on 'RW_Hinge" all successive feature lines will show up with the same elevations as "RW_Hinge". if i erase all the feature lines the select a different link say "RW_Top" then they all go to "RW_Top".

I am working on a 6 mile highway project whose surface file is 85MB big. So, I created a Data Shortcut of this surface and used this for creating profiles. However, at some locations the corridors go below the surface(as per their original profile) which was not intended. So, I need to restrict the surface to follow the corridors but not go beyond it.
I have created feature lines from corridors and tried to add them as breaklines to the surface. But " error adding breakline" error pops up.
Is it because I am trying to add the breaklines to the mirror surface which I created from Data Shortcut ??
Will it be useful if I copy feature lines to original surface file and add these feature lines as breaklines in that file??

I've been having some issues recently with Sheet Metal parts. I am attempting to make a part that looks like this:
The only way I have been able to do this so far is by doing a contour roll to get the rounded part and then add the flanges on as part of an assembly.
I have attempted to do it as one Sheet Metal piece but I continually run into the problem where I cannot refold the part once I have the flanges.
Here are the steps I have gone through:
1. Created a contour roll to the necessary angle to get my desired dimensions
2. Unfolded the roll
3. Created my hole pattern
4. Folded back the flanges
This is where I got stuck. I attempted to refold the part between the bends but it will not let me do this. If I have one flange, I am able to refold but not when I have 2.
Another problem I have encountered is when I get one flange done, the thickness of it is larger than the rest of the part.

So I have finally been able to create a surface that I like and slice some 3D solids using this surface. But now I would like to draw some contour lines of that surface. I have seen some videos about creating contour lines (such as this one: URL.... ). But in this video they import the surface using the 'connect to data' button in the toolspace area. Is it possible to insert a surface from your drawing into the toolspace area and then draw the contour lines? I managed to insert the layer containing the surface using Data --> Add drawing data --> Drawing layer... but I cannot change style or create contour lines.
