AutoCAD Civil 3D :: How To Export Contours With Multiple Surfaces
Sep 8, 2013where the contours of each surface are separated into different layers? Usually it just produces two layers for all of the contours, major and minor.

View 1 RepliesIm working in Civil 09. I need to adjust the surface I created in order for the contours to be correct. Right now I'm interpolating point elevations to adjust the contours. I find myself adding lines and adding and deleting points. It's tedious. I tried changing the grid spacing to smaller one. It didn't seem to work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have created 2 surfaces of a matierial that is buried, using drill hole data. I have a surface for the top, and then a surface for the bottom of this material. I then created a 3rd suface comparing these 2, creating an isopac contour showning the thickness of the material. My question is this:.....is there a way to make the zero (0) contour show up? I have a .5 contour interval, but 0 doesn't generate. Could i be missiing something in the settings?
View 9 Replies View Relatedi'm exporting a surface from 2013 to be used in 2010 for presentation. works great but the contour interval is not the same as the surface i'm exporting. working in 5/25 contours...xml import comes in with 2/10 contours. looked for a setting but can't seem to find.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI need to figure out a way to sample multiple surfaces for multiple alignments.
Example 1: I am creating cross sections for a river dredge showing the pre-dredge bathymetry, design dredge elevation, and post-dredge bathymetry results. I have 100's of alignments that I need to sample 3 surfaces and display in profile view. Due to the clients requirements for display, using the cross section tools don't work for me, so I have resorted to using a seperate alignment for each cross section.
Example 2: Working in a subdivision with many utility alignments it would save quite a bit of time to be able to choose a group of alignments and sample multiple surfaces in just a few clicks.
I want to extract contours with elevation labels from a C3D 2011 surface for use in another 2011 drawing without the surface, as polylines and labels. Is there a way to do this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to output the contours my surface model to a genio for use in Mx. I have the Genio exporter tool installed but when i output the genio all that appears is the Boundary line without the contours, which when i think about it makes sense as the surface contours is more a display option rather than actual contours. Is there a way of exporting the contours via genio.

My understanding is that it is supposed to use USGS dem format, but I'm having trouble getting the resulting dem to show up intact in ArcGis. The extents are off and it chopped off the northern half of the site...?
I think this is a Coordinate System issue, but can't figure out where I can change anything...
two screenshots attached. one shows surface in CAD, the other in GIS.
How do I create sections that show multiple surfaces?
All surfaces are existing, none are design. (existing ground, grubbed surface, bedrock surface)
How I miss LDD.
How practical is it to create and manage surfaces across multiple DWG files? One of the reasons I'm asking is some of our users are insisting their work can only done in a single file, resulting in massive DWG files and naturally, Civil3D slows to a crawl. I'll admit I'm not a full time Civil3D user or specialist - thats not my job. I'm reasonably certain it can be done from the most basic of research (which apparently nobody else wants to do...), but am Uncertain what the potential pitfalls are.
They complain of slowness and are requesting better computers from IT (I've talked them down to more RAM). I'm trying to forestall a potentially nasty political situation spiraling out of control: they get better computers, others will want them as well and either get them only because of connections, or won't get them and are resentful for the perceived lack of importance. We don't need people doing 2D schematic drawings on gaming rigs.
I have many surfaces overlapping and I want to create one surface with the lowest elevation for each x,y coordinate from the existing surfaces. Does autocad civil 3D have a command for this?.
View 3 Replies View Relatedusing CIvil3D to figure volumes. I have a very large aerial topo from a couple years ago to compare against a topographical survey I completed this year. No problem creating surfaces.
Question: In the topo's, I need to get a volume from two different areas....one area being a fill area, the other being the borrow area. Don't want any volume data throughout the rest of the site.
Do I just create one large surface for each topo and designate boundaries somehow? Or do I need to create multiple surfaces for each topo? If this is the case, will I need to make sure any breaklines, etc. don't cross from one area to the other?
I am creating my Final Grading surface with from 2 surfaces - a proposed road surface and a proposed grading surface. (Note of roads within the road surface)
The issue is that when I paste the proposed road surface (that consists of several looped sections) over the proposed grading surface, the proposed grading surface within the looped road areas dissappears.
I have tried several options using boundaries for the inner looped areas on my road surface, and has altered my order of opterations for my final surface edits, and many other things also.
I have attached an image for reference.
I have 2 different surfaces (Existing Ground & Proposed Pipe Invert) that I want to have the elevations shown for in a profile data band, but I want them to show at the design profile's PVIs (Proposed Road). Is it possible to set up a data band style that samples at one profile's geometry points but displays the elevations from these points from a different profile? My workaround is to set the data bands to all sample from the design profile first and label over the design profile's data band but I'm hoping for a cleaner solution. Attached is an image showing the profile view in question.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSome background: We have a composite surface of existing surveyed contours as a TIN pasted into existing aerial contours that we received from a client. We used polylines to generate our proposed contours, and then generated a proposed surface from that. We've made a blank surface, pasted in the existing surface, and are trying to paste in our proposed surface... only the existing contours outside of the proposed suface no longer line up correctly once we do.
We've tried applying the method laid out here: [URL] ........ (and the link referenced in the bottom) but are still having trouble getting the surface to work. We've tried offsetting as little as 0.25' and as much as 5' with the feature line draped over the existing surface, but it seemed that the greater the offset, the greater the discrepancy.
Just to make sure we even tried that correctly - should the breaklines that we add be standard or non-destructive? (I've tried it both ways with little success either way, so I don't know if it matters much in this instance, but perhaps for future reference it would work.)
I've attached a screen shot of our surfaces. The pink and green lines are the proposed contours, the white dashed are the existing. The outer red line is offset 0.25'. As I've mentioned, we've tried offsetting various amounts with decreasing success.
When exporting 3D contours, what property do you use to export the elevation to attribute data in the shapefile?

1. Multiple faces
2. surfaces that are not flat, cylindrical or conical
I have tried using the “stitch surface” command but I can’t seem to get it to select .

I'm drawing a topo and trying to figure out a way to manually smooth out my contours. I'm not talking about the little jagged edges that you can remove if you use the smooth surface option under surface properties but the big ugly looking jumps you see when contouring a relatively flat lot. In the ancient version of AutoCAD my company used the contours came in almost like splines and you could move the vertices around to make them look good. I know you can go in and delete some TIN lines and edit point elevations but that is very time consuming and I'm hoping there is a quicker way.
I know I can extract them into polylines but there are too many little segments to be useful. I've seen the SIMPLIFY SURFACE option and while that takes away some of the roughness it creates some as well. Is there some better option than extracting and then drawing a spline between the parts I want to smooth out? These contours don't need to be 100% accurate, I just need them to look simple, like if someone was drawing them by hand.
I have added contours to my surface (the blue lines). For some reason the surface generated contour (the orange line) is jumping across the contours I've added.
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy TIN surface either did not generate contours or did not display them on my drawing. I created and tried surface styles of many contour intervals(from 0.5' and 4' to 2' and 10') without success. I made sure my contour layers on both the Style Dialog box Display Tab and Layer Properties Manager were turned on, still no success.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems contouring in C3D 2014.
I'm using the command PL - polyline to create my break lines (Centerlines, top and bottom of curb)?.
In this particular drawing the first point I click on is carrying the elevation throughout the entire length and yielding bad contours.
Essentially the bottom of curb on each side of the street should be the same elevation with a crown at the centerline.
Instead the elevations are about five feet different because the beginning point is around the corne at a point of tangency on a hill.
This has not happened in any other drawings and I've done them the same way.
I redid the breaklines with the 3DPOLY command and aside from a few minor edits the surface came out OK.
I've been reading about 3DPOLY command but have not found out too much about what the actual difference is between 3DPOLY and PL commands.
Seems like 3DPOLY is the way to go.
I do not have too much experience with C3D 2014 and am making a huge jump from 2004 LDD. How to build 3D surfaces/contouring.
When I generating contour(surface) using Civil 3D it gives very complicated contours. Some times those contours cuts each other and have very strange shape.
I used to use SURFER software to generate contours. It gives simple contours. But I like to use Civil 3D because.
I attached SURFER contours and Civil 3D contours. I also attached AutoCAD file those who using older versing of Civil 3D.
I know how to smooth contours in Civil 3D but it does not solve my problem. You may say "You should use commands like swap edge, delete line .
We have a total of three machine at our office that are running 64-bit Windows 7 with Civil 3D 2013. Two of the three machines have problems with drawings that include AECC_Contours. When you try and start a polyline or line the mouse will begin to jump and lag. As you move the cursor off of the AECC_Contours the mouse returns to normal operation. I have looked around throughout forms and have yet to find anything that relates to this. Also I have disable Aero within Windows, thinking that may have been the issue. All three machines are running the same version of Civil 3D with the latest service pack.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhile working in a drawing with civil 3D points and a surface created from those points, once in a while the contours will disappear. The contours disappear during any number of different commands, so it doesn't seem to be linked to a specific set of commands. If we save the drawing, close it, and then open it back up the contours are there with no problems. Is there a fix for it beyond closing and reopening the drawing. We are using Civil 3D 2010 in our office, and all of the current updates.
