Photoshop :: Smooth Posterized Effect

View 8 RepliesI am having a problem in Photoshop CS6 where I am getting posterization in a layer mask, instead of a smooth gradient / transition. I am 87% sure that this is resulting in a visible hard transition in the final image (a TIFF, not a jpeg).
Â
I have tried applying a gaussian blur to the mask, but this just changes the posterization, it doesn't remove it. Doing the gaussian blur with the document in 16 bit mode doesn't make any difference.
Â
The posterization is visible at all zoom levels. I have tried setting cache levels to 1 and GPU acceleration to basic (and restarting PS), but still see the posterization when using a soft brush on a layer mask.
Â
I read some of the other threads on the forum where people had problems with their graphics cards / monitor profiles causing things to look posterized when they weren't really. The examples given in those threads looked okay to me, so I think it is a Photoshop related problem rather than a general problem for me. I've attached two screenshots below, hopefully you can open them up full size and see if they appear posterized to you.
Â
I'm not sure what the problem is or how to fix it?
Filter > Distort > Displace is undervalued gem, yet it has significant drawback - the displacement does not interpolate between adjustment pixels. This shortcoming in combination with the fact that Photoshop uses very fine noise to smooth transitions between gradations in 8-bit channels and therefore creates very unsightly, jugged effect even when displacement source is a gradient. Unfortunately the filter does not work with 16-bit channels and its closest relative - Liquify uses meshes instead of images for input.
So here is my question: does any of you aware of a way, in Photoshop or otherwise to create silky smooth displacements within 2D imagery (there are bunch of software to accomplish it in 3D) using interpolated 8 bit or original 16-bit (or higher) images as source?
The attached image was produced by displacing perfectly smooth word "test" with plain black to white gradient at 999% displacement strength.
how'd they do that?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm new to this board and would like to know the question about how to make a photo that is reduced to besmooth and sharpen, actually sort of digital filter effect like imagemagick can do. I need that for resizing adult images and made them to be attractive not rough.
actually I have bulk actions when I'm doing this procedure and only do these things: reduce image from example around 900x600 to 180x120 and then I just do filter - sharpen - sharpen. It's nothing special comparing to this photo
I have problem getting that smooth effect especially in the center of the piecehow to achieve this with a brush, i tried with lower opacity, flow, brush settings, the effect is kind of liquify, like the guy used smudge kind of, but not really[URLs]...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just had my gopro take 377 pictures over a few hours (30 seconds apart) and imported them all into the timeline. What I want to do is compress all these to a time frame somewhere around 1-1:30 or so just for a short clip of clouds moving across the sky. This is easy enough to do by selecting them all and bulk changing the duration to some fraction of a second. The problem is that it was quite breezy so the movement of the tree branches from one frame to another make it more "jerky" than I want when playing back.
Is there some way to smooth this out, I was thinking a real short fade transition between each frame, but that would take a month of Sundays and I don't know if I can get the transition short enough. I tried importing with default transition to cross-fade but the transition was way too long.
I have attached an image of a butterfly with a broken effect on its wings. You can see the effect inside the marching ants. How do i get this kind of effect?

When trying to cut out a piece of an image such as with cmd shift J with anti aliasing turned on, there is a gap between the cut out and the new image about as wide as the marquee. If I turn anti aliasing off there is no longer a gap, but then I have a very jagged cut out, since may of the pieces I'm cutting out are circular. Is there anyway to still get a smooth edged cut out without the gap?

View 5 Replies View RelatedCan ayyone help me with what i suspect is a very simple question to most of you. I've created text in photoshop using a number of different fonts. i've placed antialias on them but they still seem to heve jagged edges!! Can anyone tell me What am i doing or not doing. Ive been using the standard horizontal text tool.
Also i'm teaching myself photoshop using the help section within the software. Do you think this is the most thorough and efficient way to learn?
I'm trying to smooth the edges of an image I have. Would like to try two things.
First is,- simply smooth the edges (this is an image with people in it, and not a shape,-so I don't get the wanted effect when I do "Gaussian blur" as the whole image is being blured).
Another thing I would like to achieve is i.e. having a 600*800 image(white background) with a smaller image in the middle. Then somehow manage to blure the edges of the image and by using a gradient colour to make the blured edges cover the empty area around the pic as well... (The gradient to start at the edge on each corner of the pic and finish at outer edges of 600*800 image)..
Also, is it possible to draw a frame? Have a pic which I would like to create a tilted frame around (CTRL+T). Only manage to draw a coloured square/circle, then having to cut out the middle of the square to see the image on the layer beneath.
Created a new style in "Layer style", but where do I find this saved style?..
I need a good tutorial link on touching up photos. I need a method that is more advanced then stamp, smudge, heal, blur, repeat.
How do I make a girl with skin that isnt really that smooth look like this? edit: i cant imagine her skin was like that at the time of the photo. i mean that skin is realllllllllly smooth.
I use the magic eraser to erase the background of an object particuly orbs/balls/sphears the circle always comes out lumpy or not well rounded how do I fix this? I found a website that tells about it but I forgot the address of it.
It seems the ball is perfectly round but when I get rid of the white background the ball turns lumpy with bumps on the edges....
feathering not being smooth. When applying a vignette to a portrait the feathered result looks more like a topographical map than nice smooth transitions. I have tried every possible combination in "Refine Edge", and this seems to have started the same time that Bridge started locking up on me. I have been seeing this on my finished portraits when they come back from the lab - so it isn't my display .
I am using PS CS3 on an XP lap top.

Is there some kin of line smoother?
I know there's on in Flash that works by removing the contour points, but I can't find an equivalent in Photoshop.
When I type using "Smooth" font smoothing and the font size is small, all my characters appear in boxes (see image below). It does not happen if the font size is larger (say above 14pt). It also does not happen if I use "Crisp" or "Strong" but it happens to "None" as well. I encountered this problem in CS4 with OpenGL enabled. I turned it off but the problem remained. I also tried to open the same file in CS2 and the problem was exactly the same. I have not encountered this problem in other applications. I've updated my graphics drivers but no change. Thanks! View 4 Replies View RelatedI am a novice in photoshop and I've been trying to accomplish what seems to be an easy process. I received an illustrator file of a logo that I'm trying to work on...it has several issues that I'm trying to fix...in photoshop how to use illustrator. My major issue is recoloring parts of the image while keeping the edges smooth. It's currently brown and I just need it black. I have tried the following methods:
Â
-Magic wand the brown part and create a new layer via copy
-using brush to simply paint over it
-using paint can to fill the selection - anti aliased, I've changed the tolerance a million times
Â
-Use straight paint brush to trace over it, using a soft edge brush
-my hand isn't steady enough to do it
Â
-Magic wand and create new layer then do and over lay
Â
-Converting it to black and white
   -it turns gray

In the past I have traced the outline of an image using the pen tool by placing as many points along the contour or outline as possible. Once I closed the path the appearance was not perfectly smooth.
I remember using a tool after that to smooth the path that would eliminate any uneven or jagged edges and make the curves really smooth. How to do this in CS6?
