Photoshop :: Convert Document Into CMYK - Colour Picker Still Shows RGB?
Aug 10, 2013
When you convert a document into cmyk the colour picker still shows rgb. How do you pick colours using cmyk? Has it converted the pixel values into cmyk or has it kept it as rgb and somehow is converting these rgb values into cmyk for the screen?

I am a lifetime user of Adobe products, everything always updated to the latest, but a little stumped by this one... I opened a new document for print, specifying cmyk color and now, when I try to choose a color and apply to an object it only comes out in grayscale. What am I not understanding? as this is a first for me. I've looked back into document set up but am missing what ever it is that will not allow me to display or show color in my document.

I've only ever created graphics for the screen, now I'm trying to create something for print.I started a Photoshop document with a CMYK colour mode and soon discovered it would only let me choose colours that look murky on screen.
I've been all over the internet to read about CMYK vs RGB etc and I've seen things to suggest that printers can't print the vibrant colours we see on screen. Fine, but what about the magazine I have next to me where I can see beautiful vibrant turquoises and fushias? How did THOSE colours get on to the paper?
If a CMYK colour looks murky on screen will it look more vibrant when printed?

While working and when the job was nearly done (Photoshop document with several layers to correct wrinkles, teeth, neck...) , I found out that the document is setup RGB.I have to convert it into CMYK but I don't want to merge it or lose layers since I need them in another Photoshop document too.
While converting the image from RGB to CMYK, I found out that some of the layers (hue/saturation adjustment layers) don't exist anymore when converted to CMYK...How do I get these layers (or at least the effect they give to the design) in CMYK?

when I pdf a coreldraw document, no matter which pdf-preset I use, the "Convert spot colours to: CMYK" is greyed out so I can't tick it. I need to pdf a document to send to newspaper print. I have never had a problem like this before using CorelDraw X3.

I'm pretty new to preparing artwork for spot colour printing - it's a hoodie design in this case.
I created the artwork in CMYK originally, and have got some of the way towards converting into a 5 colour print job using Recolor Artwork, so I've got it down to 5 swatches.
However, the printer is asking for colours separated by layers, which makes sense - I think means knocking everything out so there is no overprinting - is this correct?
If so, what is the best approach to take, to avoid unnecessary work, to convert from the current artowrk, with a lot of overlapping artwork, to produce 5 layers each with vector artwork coloured with its own Pantone swatch?

I've recently received a small batch of calendars from a local commercial printers. The colours are OK, but do not match the originals, especially the blue's. I've had similar problems with greetings cards from a different printer. The problem appears to be that I supply the original files in the RGB color space, but they print using CMYK.
I Raw process using Lightroom 4, with adjustments if necessary being made using Elements 10. To the best of my knowledge neither of these programs have the option of editing or saving in the CMYK color space. For more accurate colours is my only option to purchase the full version of Photoshop (CS6 or CC), then convert and colour correct my images in CMYK mode before sending to the printers ?.

Windows 7 and Gimp 2.8.2 in single window mode.
I am trying to to use Colour to Alpha by picking a specific colour from an image. But I can't get the colour picker to work.
The image has an alpha channel.
I choose Colour to Alpha, then click on the From swatch. The Colour to Alpha Colour Picker window appears. I click on the eyedropper. But when I move the eyedropper over the image, the cursor changes to the previous tool that was used. For example, if I used the zoom tool, the eyedropper changes to zoom as the cursor leaves the Colour to Alpha Colour Picker window, and zoom becomes active.
How do I pick a colour from the image?

I recently had to get a new computer and reinstall Photoshop, I also did the update. Now when I use my color picker outside of Photoshop, it only pulls up a grey color, not the actual color I am sampling.
It works fine within the Photoshop document but now when sampling outside of it. Was this the update that messed up this functionality? Or is there a setting I need to set. All my preferences are the same from my old to my new computer.

I have 2 Macs with Photoshop and one of them has the colour picker set to a "different" look. The colour field and colour sliders on my main 'puter are "normal" having a full spectrum of colour. But the other one shows only a narrow range of colour. Well, there is the whole gamut of colour but it is shown in a weird way. I've been through the preferences and nothing addresses this issue. The attached jpg has the weird picker on the left.

When I want to use the "Eyedrop" tool to pick up the RGB value of a colour, and zoom in to pick up an individual pixel, the pixels change in colour to go with the shades of the picture. Is there anyway to expand the range of the tool to a greater pixel range to get the basic idea of what the value of the colour is?

I use the alt button when using the brush in photoshop to quickly switch between the brush and colour picker, and it usually switches the colour i have chosen to the foreground colour so I can use the colour I picked with the brush.
but I think I pressed something or I'm not sure and it stopped doing that and I've restarted my computer and photoshop numerous times and it won't change.
what happens now is when I use the alt while using the brush the colour picker selects the colour but selects the colour for the background colour and leaves the foreground colour unchanged. =(
today I found if I click on the colour picker icon and click on a colour it'll select that colour for the background colour, but if I have the colour picker as my selcted tool and press alt and click it will set it as my foreground colour.

I've just updated my Photoshop (CS6) but now whenever I use it I can’t bring up the colour picker panel. When I try, Nothing happens and everything is else is disabled- I can’t click on tools, or layers, or anything from the dropdown menus. I can't even minimize or quit the program!I’ve restarted photoshop several times, restarted my computer and this still happens every time I click on the colour swatch to bring up the picker.

Recently, I started using Adobe Illustrator and watched many tutorials for the basics of it (coming from Photoshop) but one thing that I'm not too comfortable with is the gradient tool in Illustrator compared to the one in Photoshop.
I keep reading that the only way to adjust the colours is to either use the colours in the swatches or the mini colour slider but is there a way to choose the colours like you can in Photoshop?

when I opened up a picture I had drawn to start colouring it, it was being displayed in wrong colours.
It seems to be lighter and has more yellow and red in it.
I dont recall changing anything.
This is only how the image is displayed though when you look at it on photoshop. Because after you save it, you can open in in paint or whatever and its back to its original colours.
If i start a brand new picture from scratch, and then save it and open it up in another programme the picture is significantly darker and bluer.
So I think it has something to do with the way that photoshop is viewing the picture.
Heres an example using a random magazine picture:

If you have different shades of red on a single layer but you want them all be the same shade and have the same CMYK setting. Does Photoshop CS4 have a tool to make the adjustment accurately by keying in the CMYK without filling with the paint tool?

When I import some PDF-files to XDPX (8) (Windows XP SP 3) it shows with CMYK colours. That means that I can't use the material as all colours are "wrong".
Is there a way of importing PDF-files so that they show with RGB colours?
Could that be an option in forthcoming versions; that you can select to import either as CMYK or RGB?

We would like to experiment mixing a spot colour in a normal CMYK image in order to expand the colour palette. Our problem is the fact that we cannot get Photoshop to show us the actual image once we have added the spot colour.
The spot channel shows as if it is being printed on top of the CMYK colours instead of being mixed with them. This makes it very difficult to judge what adjustments have to be made to the image. Of course, saving the file as a DCS2 and placing it in InDesign shows us what we want, but this is too much jumping back and forth between programmes to be efficient. We are runnnig CS3 on Windows XP Professional.

After installing SP3, the Export preview window, as CMYK, shows a black window, but the file is exported correctly. This situation does not happen when the file is exported as RGB. Any explanation why this happens? I´ve tried with different files and happens the same "black window".

We're creating an image for a client that will eventually be printed 4c process, and we have to use some very specific CMYK values. However, since we need to use certain layer effects, we need to work in RGB. I assumed that since the CMYK values we use are within the RGB gamut, there would be no color shift when copying from a CMYK doc and pasting into an RGB doc, but I'm apprently mistaken.
I'm not very familiar with color management, since we don't do any heavy duty color work in house, so this is likely a very rudimentary question: how do I keep colors from shifting when pasting from a CMYK document into an RGB document (which will eventually be converted back to CMYK for print)?
