Photoshop :: Scanner; To Profile Or Not?

Sep 6, 2004

When creating a profile for my Microtek 4800 scanner (using Profile Prism), I am asked to do this using the default (or none) scanner settings.

I have recently found out about calibrating and/or neutralizing my scanner to read shades of gray, say 127, 127, 127.

My question is should I profile my scanner after or before calibration, or not at all?

recommend not profiling the scanner, merely scan at 48 bits, then send it to Photoshop (for editing) as an untagged file and convert it to my PS working space.

Photoshop :: No Scanner For CS3 / CS4 On Mac 10.8.2

Jan 7, 2013

the Adobe products in question are CS3 & CS4 PhotoShop - i upgraded my Mac from 10.5.8 to 10.8.2 - i use a Epson Perfection 1640SU stand alone scanner - in 10.5.8 my scanner would always show in the Menu (Menu > File > Import > Epson Prefect 1640) - after i upgraded - it disappeared - i went to Epson’s site to get their latest driver for 10.8.2 - it direct me to go to Apple’s Store for their latest updates - i had no new updates listed at Apple Store - i called Apples help line - they directed me to one of their sites for the latest Epson driver for 10.8.2 - i installed the update - went to PhotoShop 3 & 4 - and again the scanner didn't show when I went - Menu > File > Import > (No scanner listed) - i called Apple back - told them the problem - they said for me to contact you (Adobe) since it was your software to see if you have any Plug-Ins for Epson Scanners running on OS 10.8.2.

Photoshop :: Use Protanopia (Color Blind) Profile As Regular Profile That Can Be Converted?

Sep 30, 2013

I've been trying to reproduce this color blind conditionfor a long time now and I still didn't figure out how I can do this. I've searched for cluts but didn't find any, only this, which has some previews of them, but no any files I can load into Photoshop's Color Lookup adjustment. I've looked into Pixel Bender plugin, but I'm using CC so that doesn't work either... I've also tried it with the Index Color mode, but that really messes up my image as it has a really low color range (256). I've even tried reproducing the same effect with adjustments, channels, etc, but didn't figure it out.

Since there's a way to perfectly color proof images with this condition, I'm guessing this has to be some kind of ICC profile or something similar. Is there a way I can use it as a color profile?

Photoshop :: CS6 - Using Action For Scanner

Dec 19, 2012

With CS6 I can use FileImport to initiate a scan but when I create an action and try to run it, I get an error message 'The command "Import" is not currently available'.  The action works fine with CS5.5.

I am using Silverfast and the old version works with CS5 & 6 while the new version of Silverfast works with neither.  Looks like the problem lies with Silverfast.

Photoshop :: How To Get CS6 64 Bit To Recognize Scanner

I'm running windows 7 and just installed CS6 64 bit. I understand 64 bit doesn't use TWAIN and must instead go by way of WID. Problem is getting that set up. Very little information other than being told to un-install and re-install in 32 bit.

Photoshop :: How To Connect To Scanner

May 2, 2013

I've been using CS3 for a few years (on a Mac platform). I just got a new computer (OS 10.7.5), but can't get scans imported successfully. I downloaded the latest driver from the Epson website (my scanner is an Epson Perfecion 3200 Photo), but instead of going into Photoshop as directed, the data wound up in an otherwise blank window.

Normally, accessing the scanner involved Photoshop --> file --> import, but right now my scanner doesn't show up on the sub-menu, nor do I know how to get it there!

Photoshop :: Scanner Parameters

Apr 14, 2012

I have tons of analog pictures and I would like to get them into computer and of course process in Photoshop. I have very bad experience with scanners about ten years ago, mainly since it was not able to get colors right, but it had other flaws too.

I have so many pictures it is not realistic to go into a shop, I want to do it by myself, if possible. So the question is, what resolution and color quality has the scanner to have in order to get the picture ( not slide ) close to the original ?

Photoshop :: Combine ICC Profile With Correction Curve Into New ICC Profile

Dec 21, 2012

For a monthly magazine on uncoated paper, our workflow is as follows:

- convert every photo to uncoated cmyk (PSO Uncoated) + apply some corrections to look nice in this profile
- apply a fixed correction curve to the photo's
- (resize images + apply proper sharpening for print)
- export pdf: convert colors to destination, preserve numbers

The correction curve step is critical. Without it, everything is printed much too dark.Unfortunately our printer can't provide us with a correct profile for the paper that is used. That's why the correction curve in photoshop is needed. The profile + the correction curve give a good, predictable result.

However i don't like the workflow with the correction curve, because only photoshop links can be corrected. We would also like to put a digital version of the magazine online, so i have to replace all links if i won't to have them displayed correctly.

Can i somehow combine the icc profile with the correction curve into a new icc profile?I did some research and found about "Custom CMYK" in photoshop (see screenshot), but i think an existing profile (PSO Uncoated) can't be edited or replicated in this dialog box.

But the File_Import menu still shows all three devices even though two of them have been permanently disconnected.I would really like to make the scanners that I no longer have disappear from that import menu.

Photoshop :: CS2 Crashes When Importing With Mustek A3 Scanner?

Nov 7, 2012

I have an old version of Photoshop. When I got my new Macbook a year or 2 ago I was only able to scan via TWAIN using Photoshop CS2, and it has been the best way. However, lately the scanning has been buggy. I've had no problems using PS as a whole, but sometimes when I got to Import < ScanExpress A3 USB 1200 Pro it'll scan halfway and crash, or the program will just outright crash. Today I've spent about 2 hours just trying to scan one image. It managed to work once, and now it crashes every time I try scanning.

These are the specs of what I'm using:

Mac OSX 10.6.7
Photoshop CS2
Mustek ScanExpress A3 USB Pro

I need to use this scanner daily for work - If I can't get these images scanned then I don't get paid!

EDIT: Here's the crash report I get.

Process:         Adobe Photoshop CS2 [313]
Path:            /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS2/Adobe Photoshop CS2.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Photoshop CS2

Photoshop :: Limited Image Import From Scanner

Mar 10, 2013

I find only limited image import options under Photoshop CS5 and CS6. Under CS3, I have a number of options which I have used frequently, regarding preview, zoom, descreening, filtering, stretch, noise removal, fading, grain, etc.

None of these seem to be available under either CS5 OR CS6. In fact, under CS5, under "FILE>IMPORT", I I don't even GET the Canoscan 8400F opton. This is pretty basic stuff, getting good quality off a scanner. Do I need to go back to CS3 for everything? It actually worked.
