Photoshop :: Save Channel As File
Mar 18, 2009
I have a 48bit RGB TIF file, and I would like to save just one channel from that file as a 16bit Grayscale.
Having done a bit of digging, I have found numerous ways to convert the whole image to Grayscale, with varying degrees of artistic control, but nothing about ripping out a single channel.
Can it be done? How? Have I just overlooked the obvious somewhere?
I would like to do this with as little user intervention as possible as I'm likely to want to do it, in batch mode, to a lot of images.
PS: I have no objection to a solution that actually saves all three channels in one operation, each to a separate file. I can always throw away the spares.

I have a PNG file created in Photoshop and I need to save it with an alpha channel for web purposes. I tried 'Save for Web & Devices' and selecting the Transparent box.
Then, after saving, when I select 'get info' for the file it says there is no alpha channel. I'm stumped I can't seem to create an alpha channel from within Photoshop while I'm editing.

I'm trying to edit some map files in the game called "Farming Simulator 2013" by GIANTS. They are png files & I can load/edit the files in paint. But after I save the files back to the proper game folder & try to run the game I get an error stating :grass_weight.png' incorrect format. Must be 8bit single channel. Is there a plug-in to save a file in this format? Am I missing something or am I just not going to be able to edit a paint, net file in paint.net? I

I'd like to save a quickmask (or channel/path) that can be applied to multiple other pics. I'm in need of a mask so I can color the same parts of a texture file (dds) for various colors and on 3 or 4 different texture files.
I understand a quickmask/channel/path are all related, but is there a way to transfer this mask to other pics?

I would like to create seamless greyscale patterns in AI CS6 by using typical Vector-Tools, Gradients and Transparency.Output however needs to be 16Bit/Channel RGB - 256 greys are clearly not enough on the Gradients, they would lead to nasty artifacts in the intended field of use explanation here.I realize that AI is 8bit and that internal Image-Conversion from Vector clearly was no option. The underlying question for me is - does AI also internally work with just with 256 shades of grey in its gradients too?Or was there theoretically a way to pass smoother Vectors over to PS which in contrast to AI can save 16 bit Gradients? All I tried thus far (importing AI though Clipboard as Shape-Layers/Smart-Objects) yielded unusable results for what I'm after.

I get the idea to save my processed RAW files in jp2 jpeg 2000 16 bit format(channel) so they need less space as RAW or tiff and can be later good modify without noticable quality loss. But i get the requester, that the format support only 24 bit ( 8 bit/channel)
jpeg 2000 is here since 10 years. Is it not possible that windows or other programs can read 16 bit /channel files, or whats the reason wy it is not possible in PSP X4 upd 1 to store such files ?
Does other programs too not support 16 bit /channel jpg ?

I have a series of images with alpha channels what I want to separate out from the images and save as a new file with a filename suffix.
For example I have a series of folders containing thousands of images:
These files are filename.dds files (I already have the .dds plugin to read them but you could use .png for example).
I load the image, goto Colours - > Components - > Decompose :
In the dialogue I enter color model : Alpha, tick decompose to layers - > OK
I then export the file as filename_a.jpg
Is there a way to batch this process for the 1000's of images I have?

I am a screen printer and I print my separations from Photoshop. I routinely work with multi channel files or RGB files with additional spot color channels. I have created actions to place my registration marks, re-size images, etc to get ready to print but I manually have to create the text labels for each screen if they are missing from the original artwork.
The files I work with have channels named as "Base White, Red, Green, 284 Blue" etc indicating the ink color. What i would like to be able to do is click an action that would copy the text from the channel name and insert it into a separate or each/all channels near the top of the file so that when I print each positive it has a corresponding label for ink color.
I am not sure if this is even possible, and I am limited on my knowledge when it comes to actions and have pretty much got lucky in the past getting them to do what I want without unnecessary steps.
On my registration target action it creates a new channel with each individual reg mark then combines them into one separate channel in which I just copy the contents and select all the ink channels and fill with black to make them appear, i'm happy with the steps it takes as it isn't too much trouble and if this could do the same with labels I would be happy with that.

Did someone already know about 16 bits/channel multilayer psd file parsing is different to that of 8 bits/channel multilayer psd file?
as far as I try, it seems 8 bits/channel model, image data is saved in RLE model, but it is quite different in 16 bits/channel,
we could easily find out once we load those two file into memory (with same context, only model changed).
Anyone who know which algorithm may 16 bits/channel multilayer psd taken for saving the layer image data?

I'm trying to extract the channel information from a .psd file in binary mode. I'm able to extract the number of channels and their names, but not their types (I mean if it's a spot color channel or a mask). The documentation I've found is from 1997 and some things are not the same with the newest versions.

I've made an animation file in PS CS2. I need it to have an alpha channel, or just be transparent when I import it into my video editing program Final Cut Pro.
How do I do this in PS and how do I export it?
The file is a Lower Third - which will have titles written on it.

One project I use Photoshop CS4 for is painting aircraft used with Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX). Each aircraft is downloaded as a "Paint Kit".I paint and add layers onto the kit until the aircraft resembles the design I chose. The paint kit includes a background, base parts usually in white, and an assortment of layers adding physical wear, shading, lines and rivets you see on actual aircraft.
Additionally, the kit includes an RGB Alpha Channel and Specular Maps. In this application, the Alpha channel provides the reflectivity or gloss on the aircraft paint. The Specular maps provide a sheen much like the subtle reflections you see from a metal flake paint job when the sun hits it directly.
Once all painting and manipulation is complete, the kit is "cut" into specific sizes. Once the kit is cut, each section is saved as a DDS file using NVidia tools. The resulting DDS files are placed into folders within the main FSX program folder. The FSX program "assembles" the sections and processes the different layers and channels resulting in aircraft that are incredibly detailed and realistic.
My problem is I don't know how to properly integrate and preserve the Alpha channel during the "Flatten Image" and when saving the file as a dds file. As you can see in the "Layers" section in the picture, the Alpha channel is already made. I just don't know what to do with it to preserve it and ensure the reflectivity it provides is visible in the final product.
what I need to know isn't what the alpha does, but how to properly integrate it into the final product. I've searched for this info for the last several days, but I've had no luck in finding specific information on how to do that. URL....

Is there anyway at this point in time to load a DDS file with alpha set to something other than 100%, alter the alpha channel, and save it back out again?
My situation is this. I'm currently working on a module for a game called Mount and Blade Warband and have created quite a few textures using Paint.net and never had any issues previously with any textures I've created and saved as DDS. However recently I found a texture file that I need to replace with my own version which has it's alpha channel set to something other than 100%. It's used to blend with another texture to give an aged appearance to hair.
Now this texture when loaded into Paint.net appears as a mostly transparent texture, which I cannot make any darker using the layer transparency slider which is set to maximum. i.e. The texture is loaded and displayed with transparency on, but the layer transparency slider in Paint.net is set at maximum opacity as if there is no transparency -- so the only thing I can do is make it even more transparent rather than make it darker. So when I tried to make my replacement for this particular file I created my texture, set transparency for the layer to about 20%, then saved as a DDS file -- however when I load it into the BRF game editor it displays as a completely black texture, while the original file displays fine.
EDIT: Also does it actually create mipmaps when you ask it to when saving? I just noticed that my textures don't seem to have them.
I should point out that while I'm very experienced with programming, 2D etc. I'm pretty new to 3D programming (not that I'm doing so on this project of course -- thought it might be easier working out how to create 3D objects while using someone elses engine to start with) and 3D object creation -- so things like DDS texture formats still create a lot of head scratching.

In photoshop there is a tab beside the layers tab, that allows you to add a shaded alpha channel to a .dds file.
I need to add a black alpha channel to a .dds file.
I've tried every alpha pluggin I can find but cannot replicate this effect.
And if I open a .dds file created in photoshop with a black alpha channel it is completely invisible in paint.net.
Why is it completely invisible in paint.net but not in photoshop?
How can I add a black alpha channel to a .dds file in paint.net?

URL....I am using PSE 12 as a photo editor for Aperture 3.5.1 and the photo is duplicated (as a tiff) in Aperture and PSE editor opens with the image. When I close the file and say to save the file it brings up the save as window.
I tell PSE 12 to "on first save -- save over current file" it now brings up the "save as" window and won't save over the file (changes the file type from .tiff to .tif)

In order to retain a wider gamut, I'd like to export a .raw file as a multichannel image (psd or any other file type to be opened in photoshop). Those channels should be e.g. c, m, y, k and two spot colours. As far as I understand, this can't be done from within photoshop, since an image presently in rgb can only be converted to a cmy mulitchannel image.
Would you achieve this by exporting the .raw from lightroom setting a colour space (under file settings) that contains such six print colours? And if yes, how ywould I produce such a colour space (that, if I understand correctly, must be present as a file itself, to be selected instead of the default choice between sRGB, Adobe RGB (1998), and ProPhoto RGB)? Or if there is another way to obtain such wider gamut image of more than cmyk.

I have created a short (<3 seconds) video comprised of 2 layers. Each layer was filmed as a green screen, and I used Keylight in After Effects CC to create a transparent background. My ultimate objective is to use the clip to create a transition for use in ProShow Producer, as described in the link [URL]..... To do this, I need the main video file, and a second file containing only the alpha channel.
I have used Adobe Media Encoder to output a FLV, and told it to Encode Alpha Channel, as was suggested, but I only get the one file (the main video). How do I get the alpha file?
I am using AE CC.

From the start, I wasn't able to save to jpeg without getting a dcm extension (no jpg extension). However, if I saved to Multi-picture Format, I would get the familiar .jpg and everything worked fine for a while. This morning I cannot find a file format in "save as" that results in the .jpg file extension.

I have a number of PSD files I've created and I'm trying to save them as PDFs. I can Save for Web and Devices, I can save as a .gif, .eps., and every other format I've tested, but I cannot save as a PDF. I get the error:
"Could not save a copy as (filename) because the file is already in use or was left open by another application."
I'm running Adobe Master Collection CS5 with Photoshop CS 5.5 (12.0.4 x64) on a Windows 7 64-bit machine.
I have a 928 GB HD with 697 GB free.
I have rebooted and tried saving the files immediately after I reboot. I have killed my virus scanner. I have killed a number of other possible culprits including Acrotray.exe and CS5ServiceManager.ext
I have run Process Explorer as recommended by Microsoft and found no applications using the file. I've also tried saving the file to my external hard drive and/or renaming the file with only rare luck.
The boards seem to suggest Adobe isn't taking responsibility for this and pointing it back to the OS or other software. How/where to kill whatever process it is - but at this point, all my indicators point back to Photoshop.

I have the student version of AutoCAD 2012 on an HP laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium OS. I originally installed AutoCAD in June of 2012. It worked fine for 9 or 10 months but now whenever I select File/Open, File/Save, or File/Save As, AutoCAD stops responding and the spinning blue donut appears. AutoCAD never comes back and I have to close it from Task Manager. I uninstalled AutoCAD and reinstalled it, and the process went smoothly. However I still have exactly the same problem with the File operations. I apply Windows updates, but other than that have not made any changes to the software on the laptop. AutoCAD works fine for everything except the File operations. I am able to save with CTL/S and am able to open AutoCAD files from File Manager.
