Photoshop :: Moving Paths Between Layers In CS6
Jan 18, 2013
I use paths a lot. Shape layers, vector masks, etc.
Â
In previous versions of Photoshop, I could simply drag vector masks from one layer to another, just like other layer masks. Now (with CS6) I have to do a convoluted copy an paste, switching back and forth between the layers panel and the paths panel.
Â
Is there an easier way to do this?

I have selected paths on the artboard and would like to be able to move them into one layer.
Â
As there are a large number is there anyway of moving them to a new layer without selecting them (blue highlighting) and moving them?
Â
They are selected on the artboard so the colour square appears next to them in the layers panel but I can't move them to a new layer without selecting them (even using ctrl or shift is still quite time consuming).

My c drive is full and i now create and store any new textures for use in max material editor and new scenes on a new x drive which is regularly auto backed up.
Ideally i would love to be able to transfer all c models with their c textures replaced by copy x textures in one swoop without having to individually re map every single texture of every model so that old models and models i use regularly will be backed up intact. is there a way to do this ?

It works fine until I try to move a path, any path, that I've drawn with the pen tool. It happens on any file I work in When I do, it quits and gives me the message below.

I don't know what to really call it, but here it goes.
When I create a shape with one of the shape tools, it masks it or whatever you call it when a path. And where ever I move the shape, the path goes. But when I just make a path and fill that path, the path isn't attached. So how do I "attach" the path to the layer, so when I want to resize the shape, it wont lose quality.

how to merge objects in the paths tab. Here is an example: [URL].....
Â
I have created different areas of outlines of a picture and placed them in separate paths. I would like to know how to either merge the paths (so that the 'banner' path is on top of the others), or how to move them into the 'Layers' tab.
I would like to view all these paths/outlines at once, as of now it doesn't let me while in the Paths tab - It only lets me view one path at a time.
Â
I am using Windows 7, Photoshop Version 12.0 x32

Is it possible to create an adjustment layer that affects the area outside a path? I can only get it to apply inside a path.
I am editing several thousand images of sterling jewelry. Part of the editing process is desaturating the sterling while leaving the gemstones unaffected.
I have no problem doing this, but am looking for a more effective method.
My original method was to create a path outline around the gemstones. I would use the path to create a selection. At this point the gemstones would be selected, not the silver, so I would invert the selection so that it selected the sterling, not the gemstones. Then I would create a new adjustment layer and desaturate it.
This method works fine, but the mask for the selected area is a bitmap and takes up a lot of space. I am trying to use a vector mask instead.
I can skip the converting to a selection step, and PS will use the path itself to mask the affected area. This is great, and will save many gigabytes of storage space. The only problem is that PS will modify the gemstones, and not the silver.
I can't figure out a way for PS to apply the adjustment layer to the area OUTSIDE the path instead of the inside. Is this possible?

Has editing paths on multiple layers with the direct selection tool been disabled in Photoshop CC 14.1? I can't seem to figure out how to do it now, shift- or command-clicking doesn't do anything. In fact, I can't even click to select individual paths on different layers, something that Photoshop has had forever.
Â
While it was at times problematic the way it was in 14.0 (always selecting multiple layers and having to go into isolation mode to edit just one), there were times when it was useful to edit multiple layers, or even just click between layers with the direct selection tool.
Â
Also, what is the custom keyboard shortcut for entering/exiting isolation mode? It is mentioned in the above image, but what actually is it?

In the past two weeks I've noticed a weird problem with my Photoshop CS5. I'm on Windows 7 64-bit with CS5 version 12.0.4 X64.Â
Â
Sometimes (not always) when I click a layer in the layer menu and try to move it with the move tool, it jumps to a different layer (not to the one I selected) and moves that one instead. Now, this is only if I move it with my mouse. If I move it with the keyboard, it works fine.Â
Â
Also, if it starts doing this with a layer, it will continue to do it with that layer forevermore. Even when I close the program and re-open it again. Or if I save it as a diffeent filename. If I duplicate the layer, it will do it on both the original layer I was having trouble with and the new copy of that layer. I can also merge it down with a blank layer and it'll retain the problem in the new, merged layer.Â
Â
It's annoying to have to move the affected layers with the arrow key.Â
Â
I did find a mention of this problem on a mac, but the solution did not seem to apply to a PC.Â

As I click on a different layer in the image window, the cursor seems to grab what I want without even going to the palette to select what I want! Not even having to right click. But I'm not sure if this is consistent,

I cannot bring up Layers, Channels, or Paths. Running Gimp 2.6.10 on a Windows 7 machine. Selecting Windows...Dockable Dialogs...Layers or Channels or Paths does not bring up a new dialog window. Also there is nothing in Windows...Recently Closed Docs
This occurs regardless of image file opened. Not sure how long this has been the situation as I have not been using gimp on the computer where this problem is occurring for a couple months. Am not an advanced user though have used it occasionally for years. All other Selecting Windows...Dockable Dialogs... actions bring up window boxes normally. Tab does toggle display for the Toolbox etc. Just Layers, Channels, or Paths have an issue and I suspect it may have occurred because they were sharing the same window box. I did reset Preferences.
I am able to readily create layers on top of a base image but without the dialog box, only have access to the last one created. Also can merge down the last new layer or flatten the image. My suspicion is gimp may be displaying the dialog box at XY coordinates beyond my monitor screen displayable coordinates. There is a configuration file that saves the last used settings that I can simply delete?

I've been using PS7 for a long time and this has never happened before. One minute things were fine and then something changed. Maybe I hit a combination of keys .... well here's the issue. I type text onto a blank layer. I try to move the text. In the pallette, the cursor drops off the text layer, and onto the background, instead. In order to move the text, I wind up clicking on it numerous times, or if I click on it very slowly, I can grab it to move it. This is not how it was working just yesterday. I'm sure this sounds confusing, I'm just not sure how to describe it any better. (It's not my mouse, I tried a different one.) I tried Adobe's help site and saw this:"Clicking in an image with a type tool puts the type tool in edit mode. You can enter and edit characters when the tool is in edit mode; however, you must commit changes to the type layer before you can perform some operations. To determine if a type tool is in edit mode, look in the options bar--if you see the Commit button (a check)Â and Cancel button (circle with slash), the type tool is in edit mode."

Is there anyway possible to move multiple layers at the same time, the reason I ask is because I need layers to stay aligned with others. I don't want to rasterize them because I need to edit them after I move them.

I can't move one layer' image to be under/over another one in the final arrangement space because when I do, they lose all the adjustments I had previously made. Background: I didn't move the adjusted photos into the final space in the right way in this, my first venture into CS 4, and know that now. However, when I DO try to move new photos I have adjusted and properly transferred them via Edit>merged and Edit>paste to the final place and try to move <i>those images</i>, the same thing happens! I need to know how to overlap images for placement.

I have just finished designing my characters. Now I have to create my background. I figured to do this, I would simply have to create my background and hide the layers above so I can see what I'm doing. However the few lines that I've created in my background are overlaping the characters, how can I resolve this?
Â
Also after doing a brush or creating a path in general, how do i I deselect it (instead of having to bring out the selection tool and clicking anywhere on the screen)
Â
I jut remembered something else, if i want to select an object but the selection rectangle covers the perimeter of another object, how do I avoid selecting the other object aswell?

I'm experiencing really strange cursor behavior, better explained here: [URL]...
Also after running Photoshop for some time I start to get a nasty lag. Moving layers, using brushes, everything happens with a 1-2 second delay. Hardware should not be an issue.
If I restart PS lag goes away for a while but always returns. I noticed that closing images doesn't reduce the memory PS is using according to task manager. Every image opened just increases PS memory usage, is this normal?

I have this brand new PC, got it last week, i7 core, SSD drive, 16gb ram. When I open my PSD doc with my design (approx 43mb psd file) then the photoshop application spikes in memory usage, to 3.5gb (from 120mb), and moving groups and layers around is DEAD SLOW, horrible lag.
Â
I had CS3 on my previous PC, which was Core2 Duo with 4gb ram, and the speeds there were similar on the same psd document.I've also tried CS5.1 on a similar PC hardware specs as my new PC, and moving groups and layers around is much faster. Is it just CS6? Why is this so slow?

They appear even if the image layer is turned off or I delete the image layer...move the edit then paste the image back into the PSD...the marks still appear.

I have Photoshop CS 5.1 running on Windows 7. When I resize a layer using the Free Transform function, the image "Pixilates" and looses sharpness. I have used this feature before on my computer without a problem.  I took my work to school to show my instructor. I did the same thing on the school's Apple without problem. What am I doing wrong?

Note Layer > Duplicate will not work in this regard, because I want to copy one group of paths/elements from one layer to other existing layers, not to a new layer.
Â
I have not found a command for this, nor have I found any scripts. Note I'm using CS3 but have been thinking about an upgrade.
