Photoshop :: Learning Photoshop CS2 - Books, Tutorials Courses ?
Dec 8, 2005
I would firstly like to apologise if this topic has been covered in depth but i am desperately looking for the right book/s as a Christmas present to ensure that my girlfriend learns Photoshop CS2 with ease. I have some experience in Photoshop and have been doing an IT degree here in New Zealand for the past 4 years but I’m not a designer so i really need your guys help!
I also appreciate that there are so many books out there but have found that some don’t go into enough depth or lack the variation in examples to significantly cover what photoshop has to offer. I was initially thinking that a couple of books might be necessary to take her from beginner to advanced.

The kind of photo retouching Im talking about is say taking a picture of a person and retouching it to look like they are a model and their picture is ready to be placed in a magazine.. make things look alot better. I know im not being very specific.. thats because I know hardly nothing about how to do it and I was wondering if anyone had any links they could post up for me or maybe even some really good tips...

I'm switching over to Illustrator CS2 from Photoshop CS2 and I'm having these noob problems:
- What happened to the History Actions pallete? That was very useful in PS.
When using the Pen Tool:
- How do I easily choose many anchor points at once? The lasso tool also selects everything behind it.
- How do I move an already-placed anchor point? It was Ctrl-Drag on PS.

I have Photoshop 6.0 on my computer, and just bought a 700+ pg. 6.0 book from ebay, which I hope to absorb.
A library of 12 VHS 6.0 tapes sold for more than I could see paying. Since I have 6.0, would having CDs of 7.0 be too confusing, or would it be smart? I hope to upgrade to whatever the latest version is if I can absorb this stuff!
Might anyone have some complete learning CDs that has been burned into their brains, for sale cheap?

Need to be able to trace the putting green in a close up and put grid lines every 5 yards to define size.
Also need the basic steps to import my photo to trace complete hole and save the finished product to print.
I need the grid lines to remain in the final diagram.

I was messing around with the fire technique (its awesome) and I was wondering if there are any tutorials out there that go over smoke as good as this site's tutorials went over the fire. If anyone could post me a link to a good smoke technique page it would be greatly appreciated. I notice that eSJayBee posted a thread called "Anyone care for a sig" and the smoke in that looked awesome,

I want to learn how to use Illustrator since most of my graphical knowledge is for photoshop and flash. Since Illustrator is a great vector program I'd like to learn how to make them. I've searched all over the internet for tutorials on how to use the program and to make vector art but I havnt been able to find any good tutorials. Can someone point me in the direction of some good tutorials on how to do vector art? Or if someone wants to write a tutorial on it ...

i am hoping to learn to paint with photoshop but can't seem to find a good tutorial. I don't have a tablet so mine never looks as good as theirs does. Can someone tell me where i can find a tutorial by someone not using a tablet.
Also, those speed things don't help because i can't tell what they are using. If no one can find a tutorial by someone using a mouse, then any good tutorial (that i could still follow with a mouse) will do.

Formerly using other image software, I have just loaded up CS2 and have a quick project to output that has about 1,000 images in it. All the images need to be stretched width wise by about 133%. Can someone direct me to a quick way to do this on ALL the images quickly instead of one by one as I did with my old software? The images are all .BMP's
Also, and second to the above, if someone can direct me to Adobe CS2 tutorials either free online or purchasable on DVD that would be quite helpful.

Anytime I try to cutout a piece of an image and paste it into another image, the final result always turns out bad. It looks exactly like what it is...a cutout pasted onto another image.
Are there any good tips or tutorials on what to do to an image cutout to make it blend more seamlessly into another image?

I ve bought PS11 and when I get to the Video tutorials Page I can roughly understand what the Instructors say because they speak way too fast for my italian ears and cannot make much of what they say.
My question is this; how can I slow down the audio in a Tutorials? I m sure Adobe has ways to reduce the audio in their tutorials.

I'd like to hear if anyone has any experience with Lr books. At 35 to 50 bucks each and the hundreds of pages buying the wrong one or many could make a major hole in ones Latte' budget and the time to enjoy them.
In short: experience and recommendations.
Oh yeah, I read the manual that comes in the box, took 15 minutes and was of nearly no use.

how to use the airbrush or the other painting tools to duplicate reflective surfaces manually like gold, silver, platinum, copper, bronze, etc?
I would like to take for example a line drawing and duplicate a golden belt buckle, ring, gold chain, a chrome bumper, anything like that. I have experimented with gradients and trying out the airbrush, but it doesn't seem to get the effect I'm trying to apply.

I design wedding albums for a photography studio, and I'm currently trying to order an album from Asuka books (in case anyone might be familiar with them). In order to do this, I have to take the folder containing all my files (jpgs) and run it through their "file checker", to make sure all the files are in the correct format. Anyway, everytime I do this, I get a message saying "some color profiles are not embedded". I don't really know much about color profiles, except that the template I'm using from the company is "Adobe RGB (1998)", so I set my workspace color profile to the same. The people at Asuka have not been able to help me, and I'm way behind deadline and about to lose it! Bottom line...Does anyone know how to tell which files have embedded color profiles and which do not?

When I go into Full Editor I have The Learning Center on the left and to the right of that I have the Tools Toolbar.
My problem is that these overlay the photo I am trying to work on. I do not think this happened before. I am sure I did something to cause this but I do not have a clue what that would have been.
It seems to me that the workspace for the photo was to the right of whatever was on the right.

I am rather new to AutoCAD 2010, and have observed issues with Annotative Scale. I have tried to avoid that function like the plague, but now I have some time to learn of it and its power.
I've been tasked with creating/updating Electrical Department symbol blocks. Right now, I am working on lighting fixture blocks, and I have this particularly odd scenario when i'm making the Block Attributes. My new block is for a 2 foot by 4' lighting fixture. When this block is to be inserted in Model Space, the size will always remain constant (2'x4'), but I need the Attributes (one for the Fixture Type, and one to denote the Circuit Number and Switch leg) to change sizes per the plan scale on Paper Space.
How, and in which space, should I construct my light fixture block & attributes? And, which parts of the block or attributes should be Annotative? Also, the light fixture can be either oriented vertically or horizontally. Will I still be able to relocate the attribute using -EATTEDIT or -ATTEDIT?

I would like to make a second version of an 80 page Blurb book I built in Lightroom 5. Can I make a duplicate of the existing book (like a vritual copy, etc) so that I don't have to build the second version from scratch? The first version is an enhanced ebook with video and a lot of double truck images, and the second will be for PDFs, omitting the video pages and 2 page spreads.

I've just emptied my bank account and bought CS4 (omg!) and I'm a completely new user to Photoshop (apart from using the trial versions) so I wondered if anyone had any advice on a book to buy to help me learn Photoshop?
I know there's tons of tutorials on the web but I really prefer a hard copy on my desk to refer to.
What books have you read on PS that you would recommend?

The last 2 weeks I spent creating a photobook (30x30cm), 100 pages. To have a faster start, I've duplicated a book project that was created with Lightroom 4 and edited this.
Â
Unfortunately I cannot export the new book. Neither as PDF (tried several settings) or JPG, nor can I upload it to Blurb directly. Whenever I press any of the available "Export to PDF" or "Upload to Blurb" Buttons, simply NOTHING happens. No activity bar in the top left corner, no "Please wait" or whatsoever window. Simply no response from the software. I can continue working with Lightroom, the speed is the same (which means no background process like image conversion) has been started.
Â
To reproduce the error, I've created a new book with LR 5 quickly. "+" Button in Collections > "Create new book" > added 20 pages, filled them randomly with photos (that have been part of the old book projects, too) "Export to PDF" > A new window opens, where to save the PDF. Perfect. Works as desired. "Upload to Blurb" > "Buy the book" windows opens, where i have to enter my Blurb Username and Password. Correct behaviour.
Â
Back to the formerly created book (the LR4 duplicate). Same error: No response. I let LR5 create all necessary 1:1 previews, again > Nothing. Exited Lightroom and restarted it > Same problem. Restarted Windows and Lightroom > No export of the book. This happens to all my book projects that were created using Lightroom 4 and below.
Â
OS: Windows 7, 64 bit (all updates)
Lightroom 5, 64 bit (including the new "ui.dll" file to prevent random crashes issue in Library Module), no active Plug-ins
PC: I-7 3930 K (Socket 2011), 32 GB RAM, Geforce GTX 570

Well this is not strictly an InDesign issue, but I'm counting on the aggregated knowledge and experience of all you typesetters here. So, what would be the best way of storing manuscripts? Text files, perhaps? What about formatting; markup language? How publishers archive them?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to clean some scans of old books in order to be able to reprint them. The final result I'm aiming at is B/W or grayscale images.
The most problematic is the ink passing through the paper that makes it harder to read.
The most efficient way I had found until now is to use the separate+ plugin, keep only the C and/or K layers and merge them as the brown spot have much less blue than the actual ink. But in this sample, the colors are too close.
In theory, something that I think is possible but how to differentiate dark places with sharp edges (actual writing) from the ones with soft edges (ink passing through) that would be blanked.
