Why can't i move the pasted selection. it was cut from another photo and copied to this one. It was dropped in the middle of the photo but the move tool has no effect on it.

View 3 Replies View Relatedpasting new layers happens so often it's getting a bit redundant to always move my cursor over to the Layers panel, right-click and select New Layer (just the way I have been doing it) to get around the Floating Selection behaviour.
I'm wondering if there is a keyboard shorcut, or if I can change the default behaviour to automatically paste it as a new layer and not as a floating selection, or if there is some other trick people here like using to save time.
As stated I'm using Mac OSX (ML) with GIMP 2.8.3.
Within gimp, I selected a portion of one image, copied it, and pasted it on another image. Now I want to take the pasted selection and increase/decrease its size. What tool does this? 'Grow' and 'Scale Image' doesn't work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make an image with 2 layers: one is a circle that I'm using as a background (and everything outside the circle is transparent) and the other is a selection that I've copied that I want to paste over the background. Is there a way to make it such that the selection I'm pasting will only cover the background image and if any parts of the selection that I'm pasting go outside the background image into the transparent parts of the image that the transparent section will remain transparent?
I've been doing it an ad hoc way of just erasing parts of the layer that I'm using to paste and checking for transparency underneath but that's pretty time consuming. I assume there's a better way?
Also, vice versa: is there a way so that if I have a selection that has transparent sections that I paste over a background, that the selection I'm pasting will have it's transparent sections not overwrite none transparent sections of the background? I mean, outside of using magic wand to select everything except the transparent sections and just pasting the parts I selected using magic wand over.
I have the latest gimp.

This seems to be a new problem over the past couple of weeks.
I'm working on a collaborative process that involves taking a .dxf from autocad and editing it graphically in illustrator. The .dxf file needs to be updated periodically and we have a system where we update the .dxf, open it in illustrator (CS6) and then copy/paste the updated elements into the graphic document in progress. When pasted, the new paths sometimes retain attributes (like stroke color) from the .dxf file, beneath the graphic style attributes of the layer the new work was pasted into.
Is there a way to force the graphic style of the layer being pasted into to override any original attributes from the copied file?
people want to move multiple layers together. I know how to do that. I want to move a selection in two (or more) layers together. I'd also love to know how to use the free transform tool on a selection box in multiple layers.

How can I move (rotate or otherwise transform) a Selection.
1. Suppose I have a single Layer, on which I draw an image.
2. Now I activate a Selection Tool (Rectangular, Elliptical, Lasso, etc.) and make a Selection.
3. Then I activate the Move Tool and click on the "Move Selection" option, not the "Move Layer" option. [Oddly, when the "Move Selection" option is activated, there are two greyed out (unavailable) sub-options, both indication "Move Selection".]
4. With the Move Tool, I am able to move the Selection, but not the contents of that Selection.
The Gimp Documentation guide says:"If you click-and-drag the selection without handles, you create a new selection! To move the selection contents, you have to hold down Ctrl+Alt keys and click-and-drag the selection. This makes the original place empty. A floating selection is created. The required key commands may differ on your system, look in the status bar to see if another combination is specified; for example, Shift+Ctrl+Alt."
I have tried every combination of Shift, Ctrl and Alt (Shift+Ctrl, Ctrl+Alt and Shift+Alt). None of these allow me to move the contents of the selection. Further, there are no "handles" on the Selection. I suppose the key is to get the handles to appear, but I have not been able to discover the secret combination of keys to make that happen.
I am running Windows XP Pro.
I'm a longtime Photoshop user in the process of switching to Gimp. I've successfully used Gimp for very simple things like brightness/contrast, color adjustment, and sharpening of single-layer images. What I'm trying to do now involves creating a copy of the background and placing it next to the background image, and I can't figure out how to make it work.
Here's what I'm doing:
1. Resize the canvas to twice the width of the original image, leaving the original image at left. This creates a "blank" area to the right which displays as a checkerboard pattern.
2. The area of the original image is already selected (i.e., it already has a frame around it), so I copy and paste it. This creates a floating selection, duly noted in the list of layers.
3. But when I try to move the floating selection to position it to the right of the original image, in the blank area, it appears to disappear behind the checkerboard pattern.
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. I'm on the right layer, selected some text with the rectangle, clicked the move tool & tried to drag the selection (have the little hand showing so I'm in the right corner) but the box just expands the contents. (I tried both move tools, although I've no idea what the difference between them is.
I have used the move tool a little in the past, and it worked.
So, I just installed Illustrator CC, which I now have on a trial license. About an hour ago, illustrator suddenly started refusing to move any objects while I'm in the Selection Tool. I can move the objects only in Free Transform. I use hot keys a lot, so it's really slowing me down. I hit "V" to click on and then move an object, and then it won't move. I get the error sound, but no dialogue box pops up to explain what the error is.
Since I'm getting ready to bite the bullet and start paying a hefty monthly fee for this program when my trial runs out, this is pretty aggravating.
I wrote a lisp program which creates a selection set using ssget. Then I use the bounding box commands to get the lowest point of that selection set. Now I want to move that selection set as a whole using the vla-move command. Can we vla-move a selection set?

I created a carpet and decorated it with symbols. When I tried to place it in the perspective grid with the perspective tool, it wouldn't move. I can move it fine with the selection tool and there's a bounding box but nothing happens when I use the perspective selection tool.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have recently upgraded to 2013 from 2007 and I am having some weird trouble with the move command. I will try to explain.. I type the move command and then select a particular object I would like to move a little and it grabs some (not all) of other objects/lines near it and then stretches the lot in all directions! It actually doesn't allow me to move it at all without stretching/extending all these areas. I have tried everything I can think of and am not sure what I am missing. I thought it was somehow related to the polyline I was selecting, but it does it to single lines as well.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI select my objects to move, then I select my Base Point to move my objects away from, then when I select my destination point the command changes the Base Point to the selected destination point and asks me again to select a destination point.
I have realized this problem occurs not only with the move command, but also the stretch command. Also, it does not matter if I am using command modifiers or not, the problem occurs regardless. Also, it does not matter how I hit enter using the command (keyboard enter button, space bar, or right mouse button) the problem occurs regardless, and occurs entirely AT RANDOM.
Following previous what I have attempted to resolve the problem:
- remove the AutoCAD LT 2012 from the computer entirely and re-install
- installed the latest LT 2012 Service Pack
- changed the mouse to a new, wired mouse (I was already using a wired mouse in the first place)
- change the keyboard (which I think is irrelevant since changing the mouse did not work either)
I have a piece of art on "Layer 1" that i need to shrink and duplicate to "Layer 2". The two layers are always named the same. I'm working in CS5.

When I click on the box and move the pointer the entire box and image move. This was working OK until about 5 hours ago.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI would like to move elements of that painting onto a separate layer. What is the best way to do this? An example of this would be a painting with the moon in a night sky. I might want to move that moon object into a separate layer.
My reason for wanting to do this is I want to change the background of the painting without worrying about doing fine details around the objects I am moving. A second benefit of moving the objects to a layer is that I can then easily move the location of those elements in the painting around, trying to reposition them.
can I get all of the elements I am moving onto a SINGLE layer AND still have the ability to move those elements around separately? If I want to move 10 elements in a painting to a separate layer, it is REALLY inconvenient to have to put those into 10 separate layers and constantly maintain naming of these different layers.
I have quit the program and restarted it. I have restarted the Mac and the problem is still there. None of my other program windows are stuck, just Elements.
It is too far to the left and it won't move over.
I have Photoshop Elements 11 on my PC, but now I have baught me a new iMac. How do I move the program to the new Mac?

Also, if I have layers inside a folder and try to move one of those layers, the entire folder is selected and all layers within that folder move.
I have not grouped any layers together.
I'm using Mac OS 10.4.8 with PS 9.0.1
