I am trying to transfer my Elements 9 data files from a PC to an iMac. My attempt to generate a backup file from the PC keeps stopping at about the 85% point with a message saying "faulty file". Is there a technique I can use to locate this "faulty file"?
View 1 RepliesI purchased a new computer today and also purchased PSE 12 (I had PSE 10 running on a different machine/laptop). On the laptop/PSE 10, I had about 20,000 digital on an external drive (all were tagged according to color, theme, etc via the PSE organizer). All of the elements were stored on the external drive under a folder called "digital kits". I used the PSE 10 backup utility to backup my catalog to ease the move to my new machine. After I performed the backup, I renamed the "digital kits" folder to "digital kits-glw" because I intended to just move the external hard drive to the new computer and restore the catalog to the same path, “E:digital kits”, as I have other software that is dependent upon that path.
The restore went pretty quickly, and I can see the correct folder structure within PSE 12 Organizer, but all I have is a bunch of blank thumbnails. Upon closer inspection, the restore did NOT recreate the E:digital kits folder on the hard drive as I expected. Worse, the E:digital kits-glw folder is virtually empty (just a handful of thumb.db files). So, it appears the backup process deleted/hijacked all of my files. (Note: I did NOT verify the contents of the digital kits folder before I renamed it.) Tech support is closed until Monday, and I’m just sick over the possibility of losing all that data, so I’m turning to you all.(I have a backup of the data, but without the catalog piece I would have to re-catalog all 20,000 elements!)
I have experienced that when restoring a catalogbackup, all data connected to each picture is gone, and i have to use many hours to organize once more.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to move my Photoshop Elements 9 catalog from my PC to my Mac.
I have backed up the catalog to an external HDD but when I connect it to the Mac I can see the folder but I cannot open it. The backup is big, over 200GB, could this be the problem? I have several other backups on the same HDD but the MAC cannot read any of them.
I can open the folders without any problem on a PC. I took the HDD to a Mac "Genius Bar" and they could not open the folders on their Mac either and had no idea what could be causing the problem. I had no problem migrating to the Mac about a year ago when I first got it, but I suppose the backup would have been smaller then.
When i back-up the catalogue, i assumed the backup would be mede of al the tags added to photo's. When i check the catalogue-files, i see a whole lot of jpg-files. My actual photo-collection contains jpg-, raw an avi-files.
I have a habit of making a copy of all my photofiles, but now it seems double
Question: Does de backup-function of photoshop elements 11 actually make a backup of tags and photo's?
I have Photoshop Elements 12. I can backup a catalog to my Mac, but not to an external drive. I have tried two different externals. Both work with my PC, but not the Mac. I created a new 1 photo catalog as a test. It will back up to the Mac, but not the external.

Just out of curiosity, why is the "my catalog file" which PSE references on the local drive so much smaller a full backup of the catalog to an external drive?
I am trying to move my catalog from a Windows xp computer to a new Windows 7 computer.In attempting to do so I an trying to make a backup of my catalog.When I attempt to make a full catalog backup I get an error message at the end of the writing of the backup file. The message is: "Error encountered while writing file."
The images are written to the backup file (> 20,000 images) and the Catalog.buc is written as well, but the Backup.tly is missing in the backup folder.I have gone thru my catalog and have found no unconnected files and no file that are in need of repair. Everything seems to be in order with the catalog.

The location of "My Pictures" is on my primary Hard Drive D:My DocumentsMy Pictures

I see that the initializing window opens when I switch to QUICK but when I switch back to GUIDED the Initializing bar is always somewhere in the middle and never moves to the end.

I have the Creative Suite cs5.1 student version (had it for about a year now), and now recently I have started to encounter a strange bug with Photoshop.
Sometimes when I have been working in PS for a while and then open another file, the photoshop starts acting weird, resulting in the file looking like this: [URL] .....
And if I try to paint anything, it will look pixelated like in this file: [URL] .... and if I use ctrl+z after painting the paint just looks like this: [URL]...... the 2 last named effects will also apply for any images opened before this occurrence, and it happens for any file type.
I have checked my video card drivers, and they are up to date, so that's not a problem (My graphics card is ATI Radeon 5700 series). I've also run a throughout virus scan with Norton without it finding anything.
When I try to backup catalog, elements orgainizer says it requires about 400 terabytes, (photos really take up 26 gb) What gives?

When I try to backup my catalog to DVD it appears like it is working then a box opens with "Elements Organizer" at the top. At the bottom it says, "Disk Creation by Sonic Solutions" and in the middle there it says "Writing Disc" with a progress bar under it. This displays for a while but the progress bar never goes above 0%.
After a while (like 5 minutes) a Windows Error message appears that says "Elements 12 Organizer has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"
There is no other error information displayed that indicates what the error is however I went to the Windows Event Viewer and found the following Event:

I've used PSE 10 for some time, but only backup about twice a year (full backups to both external drive and dvds stored offsite). It won't let me backup to my K drive (external), doesn't even start before stating that it has encountered an error writing the file. The external drive works fine; just backed up using Windows BU. I've repaired, optimized, and reconnected files to no avail.

PSE 10 backup of 60K photos failed to backup 4K photos, many .tif and some .jpg. Reconnected, repaired, repaired anyway & optomized all successfully prior to backup. Also did same after backup & restoration and all steps were successful except Reconnect was not. Refuses to reconnect missing files, so have manually found (by scrolling through the catalog) and connected 2.5K photos. Remaining unconnected photos can only be located one at a time by clicking on Reconnect, which results in a total count of the number missing and then PSE 10 tries to locate just one and when doesn't find it, the PSE 10 closes. Has taken weeks to reach this point by scrolling 60K photos so remaining, some of which are in stacks, by letting PSER 10 try to Reconnect each photo one at a time and close is a tremendous waste of one life!
